Grundarfjordur is a little town, situated in the north of Snæfellsnes peninsula, west Iceland. It is located between the sea and a mountain range. The nearby mountain named Kirkjufell forms a tiny peninsula. Grundarfjordur has a total area of 148 km2 (57 ml2) and a population of around 900 inhabitants.
Grundarfjordur is one of the oldest fishing settlements in Iceland. It is a natural harbour with an area dominated by Snaefell Volcano and Glacier where the entrance to the centre of the earth can be found, according to Jules Verne's book.
In 1786 the town of Grundarfjordur officially received the right to do commerce. Around 1800, French merchants arrived in Iceland and lived in Grundarfjordur. They built a hospital and a church of their own. The town became rich via fishing industry, and the wealth shows in the style of the luxurious houses being built.
A road to nearby Stykkisholmur crosses a large lava field, named Berserkjahraun. The lava field's name comes from Eyrbyggja saga, according to which a couple of Berserkers were slain there by their master, as one of them fell in love with master's daughter.
