RV Varuna Review

Review of RV Varuna

RV Varuna cruise ship was launched in 2006. The riverboat was specifically designed to operate cruises on Ganges River in India. Varuna offers 7- to 13-night (8- to 14-day) itineraries leaving round-trip from Kolkata, India. Until 2019, the vessel was chartered by G-Adventures (fka "Gap Adventures") - a small group travel cruise company headquartered in Toronto Canada. Varuna's current shipowner is the local river cruisetour company ABN (Assam Bengal Navigation).

"Varuna" is the name of the Hindu god of water and celestial ocean, as well as the god of the underwater world's law. The ship accommodates up to 24 passengers in all 12 staterooms, all of which are located on the upper deck. Of those, 10 cabins are with twin beds (cabin size 17 m2 / 185 ft2) and 2 with double beds (cabin size 21 m2 / 225 ft2). Each stateroom features a large window (opening, fitted with a screen), plenty of under-bed storage and generous closet space, in-room controlled air conditioning in-cabin windows (with mosquito screens), en-suite bathroom, hairdryer, slippers, safe.

Onboard facilities include a cosy dining room, a bar (with French door-windows opening onto a front balcony deck), a spacious lounge (with a small library and pre-recorded entertainment), spacious covered sun deck with loungers. Also available for passengers onboard are laundry service, turndown service, cold towel service, shoe cleaning (after shore excursions). Free Wi-Fi is available between 6 am and midnight, when the boat's power generators are shut off. However, the Wi-Fi signal is not always available or even strong enough to connect.
