  Port Map

Las Palmas (officially Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) is a port city and capital of Grand Canaria Island.  Las Palmas is also the Canary islands' co-capital (together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife). The city has a population of around 385,000, ranking it the Canary Islands' most populous and the Spain's 9th largest metropolitan area.

Las Palmas is located within easy reach of the renowned Playa del Ingles beach, the magnificent Sahara like dunes of Maspalomas and the beautiful small resort Mogan. In quieter corners of the Gran Canaria Island attractive old towns like Teror and Arucas (the 'banana capital') invite exploration. Inland volcanic landscapes of craters, gorges and mountains rising to 1980 m (6500 ft) offer memorable sightseeing. The extinct Bandama crater is reputed as the world's only inhabited crater.

During his discovery voyage in 1492, Christopher Columbus was forced to pull his ships into Grand Canaria to make repairs to the "La Pinta" ship. During three subsequent sailings, he stopped again in the Canaries. The city of Las Palmas was established by the Spanish in the heart of a lush palm grove during late 15th century. Today it is the largest in the archipelago and one of the Spain's leading ports.

Las Palmas cruise terminal

Gran Canaria is the 3rd largest island of the Canaries. Its capital, Las Palmas, is where cruise ships dock at Muelle Santa Catalina. The cruise terminal is located at just a 10-min walk from Parque Santa Catalina with its outdoor cafes, numerous restaurants and bars, shops, and the Virtual Science Museum. A major department store and Shopping Centre, the Castle of the Light built in 1474 and the Church de la Luz lie outside the dock gates. The main market and shopping area are a bit further and best reached with a taxi. For swimming Playa de Las Canteras is just 15 minutes walk from the port. Many of city's sights are situated in Vegueta and Triana areas and are best reached by bus or taxi. Here travelers will find the Cathedral, Columbus House, Canarian Museum, Museum of Sacred Art and Perez Goldaz Theatre.
