Review of Norrona ferry
MS Norrona ferry is a Ro-Ro passenger vessel operated by SMYRIL LINE. The ship has a maximum capacity of 1482 passengers and 800 cars (or 130 trucks/trailers). Launched in 2003, she currently operates on the Denmark–Faroes–Iceland route between Hirtshals–Torshavn–Seydisfjordur. Crossing time between Hirtshals and Torshavn is 38 hours in winter and 30 hours in summer. The onward crossing to Seydisfjordur takes an additional 15 hours, excluding the layover in Torshavn (summer only).
Cabins
As a cruise ferry, Norrona offers a total of 318 cabins with 1012 berths. All staterooms are air-conditioned, and most feature en-suite bathrooms (washbasin, WC, shower), except the Couchettes on Deck 2, which share facilities. The ferry company provides bed linens, towels, and toiletries. Cabin types include both outside and inside staterooms (inside cabins have no windows).

All outside cabins include a minibar (fridge) stocked with cold beverages and snacks at additional cost. Inside cabins feature a wall-mounted small table. Standard amenities in all staterooms include a writing desk with chair, wardrobe, bedding, bedside lamps, flat TV, and a 240 V power outlet.
- One Suite (Deck 7, starboard) includes a separate bedroom (King-size double bed, bedside cabinets with two drawers), a living room (L-shaped sofa, two armchairs, low table, fruit bowl), two flat TVs (living room and bedroom), phone, and a large bathroom (double-sink vanity, bathtub, shower, WC). The Suite’s minibar is complimentary and includes 2 bottles of Aqua D'or water, 2 beer cans, 2 soda cans, 1 chocolate bar, and 1 minibag of KiMs Snack Chips.
- Outside Family Cabins consist of two rooms (with connecting door) and offer 1 double bed (120 cm wide) plus 4 additional beds (including 2 sofabeds).
- Deluxe Cabins (for 2–4 passengers) are ideal for families with children and feature 1 double bed (160x200 cm) plus 1 sofabed (130x210 cm). The Deluxe minibar is complimentary and includes 2 bottles of Aqua D'or water, 2 beer cans, 2 soda cans, 1 chocolate bar, and 1 minibag of KiMs Snack Chips.
- 4-Berth Cabins (inside or outside) include 2 sofabeds and can be booked for 3 or 4 passengers.
- 12 Double Bed Cabins (outside), located on Deck 7, include a flat TV and a double bed (140x200 cm).
- 4-Berth Shared Cabins (inside) are gender-segregated (male/female) and fitted with 4 bunk beds (2 lower + 2 upper folding berths). These cabins may also be booked as single cabins.
- Couchettes, located on Deck 2, are economy-class shared cabins designated by gender. Each contains 6 bunk beds and accommodates 1–6 passengers. Bathrooms (separate showers and toilets) are located outside the cabins. Shared couchette fares include 2 breakfasts or lunches (at The Diner, on crossings to Iceland) or 1 breakfast or lunch (on crossings to the Faroes). Linens and luggage lockers are available at extra cost.
- Wheelchair-accessible cabins (for disabled and reduced-mobility passengers) are located on Decks 5 and 6. These outside cabins accommodate 2–4 passengers.
- The ship also offers reclining seats (aircraft-type recliners) available for pre-booking in the Reserved Seating Lounge.
All passengers must vacate their staterooms 30 minutes before arrival at the homeport.
Shipboard dining and entertainment options
Norrona offers the following onboard facilities:

- Luggage lockers on Decks 2 and 7, available in two sizes — large (88-60-40 cm) and small (78-40-30 cm). Lockers incur a fee each time they are opened.
Emergency instructions are displayed in all staterooms, on TV screens, and at the ship’s assembly stations (muster stations). Life jackets are distributed at the assembly stations. In an emergency, the use of elevators/passenger lifts is prohibited.

Car decks
Garage decks for cars and trucks are located on Decks 2–3–4. The following car-deck safety procedures apply:
- Passengers with disabilities or requiring assistance should contact the Information Desk.
- Apply the handbrake and place the vehicle in park or 1st gear. Switch off the ignition, alarm systems, electrical equipment, and headlights. Gas cylinders, if any, must be turned off. Lock the vehicle.
- Take only valuables and essential hand baggage with you.
- Note your vehicle’s location and the garage deck number/stairway before leaving the car deck.
- Access to vehicle (cargo) decks during the voyage is prohibited.
- Smoking on vehicle decks, as well as in cabins and passenger lounges, is strictly forbidden.
- Wait for the onboard announcement before returning to your vehicle.
- To prevent air pollution, do not start the engine until instructed.

Ship’s power output is 22.4 MW (diesel engines) and 3.5 MW (propulsion/bow thrusters). The vessel is equipped with two stabilizers. Maximum draft is 6.3 m (21 ft). Safety equipment includes four lifeboats and advanced marine systems for fire prevention, fire fighting, and evacuation. Safety instructions and evacuation procedures are posted on all cabin doors, as well as in staterooms and public areas.
Cargo capacity is 3250 tons (1830 lane meters).
The ferry’s maiden voyage took place in April 2003. During the winter months, crew levels are reduced to 20–25, and the vessel is operated more like a container ship. In severe weather conditions in the Faroe Islands, instead of Tórshavn, the ship may alternatively dock at Klaksvík (Bordoy) or Runavík (Eysturoy).
