Spirit of Tasmania 2 ferry Review

Review of Spirit of Tasmania 2 ferry

MS Spirit of Tasmania II is a Ro-Pax passenger vessel operated by TT-LINE Tasmania. The ship has a maximum capacity of 1,400 passengers and 500 cars, plus 110 trucks (trailers). She was launched in 1998 and currently operates on the Victoria (Australia)–Tasmania ferry route Melbourne-Devonport (Bass Strait crossing time 9–11 hours).

Notably, for three years (2003 through 2006), the fleet also included Spirit of Tasmania III (IMO 9086590), which now sails as Mega Express Four (Italy-flagged) for Corsica-Sardinia Ferries. The 1995-built vessel (as Superfast II) joined TT-Line’s fleet on September 30, 2003, and was deployed on the Devonport-Sydney NSW route starting January 15, 2004. The service was terminated in August 2006. Spirit of Tasmania III was acquired from Superfast Ferries in July 2003 (reportedly for AUD 103 million) and was owned by TT-Line from 2003 to 2006. On July 17, 2006, the vessel was sold to Corsica Ferries for EUR 65 million (AUD 111 million).

Spirit of Tasmania 2 ferry Wiki

The vessel was operated under the names "Superfast III" (1998–2002, by SUPERFAST FERRIES) and "Spirit of Tasmania II" (since 2002, by TT-LINE Tasmania). The ship entered service on March 16, 1998, and was deployed on the Greece–Italy route Patras-Bari (via Igoumenitsa). In March 2002, Superfast Ferries (a subsidiary of Attica Holdings) sold the vessel to TT-LINE. After a drydock refurbishment at Neorion Shipyard on Syros Island and being renamed "Spirit of Tasmania II", the cruise ferry began the Melbourne–Devonport service for TT-LINE on September 1 (inaugural voyage).

The vessel is the second in a two-ship series built for Superfast Ferries in Turku Finland (at Kvaerner Masa-Yards), with sistership Superfast IV (Spirit of Tasmania 1). In 1995, for the Patras–Ancona service, Superfast Ferries introduced the sisterships Superfast I (now Skania) and Superfast II (now Mega Express 4).

The ship underwent an extensive drydock refurbishment in 2014 in Sydney NSW (at Captain Cook Graving Dock, Garden Island), costing TT-LINE Tasmania USD 10 million (GBP 7.5 million). The project was carried out by Trimline (UK) with local contractors and subcontractors. During the overhaul, all four passenger decks (cabins and public areas) were completely remodeled and upgraded, and two cinemas, a self-service restaurant (TMK), three new bars, a family play area, and a retail shop were added.

On December 8, 2017, TT-LINE Tasmania announced that the existing ferries would be replaced with two newbuilds, originally scheduled for launch in 2021 and 2022. In January 2018, Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Flensburg, Germany) was selected as the shipbuilder. In May 2018, TT-LINE Company signed a EUR 438 million contract for two new LNG-powered cruise ferries. Each vessel has a length of 212 m and a capacity of 1,800 passengers and 600 cars. The new ferries are expected to increase the company's capacity by 43% (passengers) and 39% (freight).

Ship technology

The ship’s powerplant consists of four SULZER marine diesel engines (model 16ZA40S, V16 turbocharged) with a combined output of 42.2 MW. At sea, power is generated by two shaft generators connected to the main engines. In port, power (approximately 1.5 MW) is supplied by three diesel generator sets.

The propulsion system is based on two reduction gearboxes (510/147 rpm) connected via driveshafts to controllable-pitch propellers. The vessel is equipped with three thrusters (fixed, hull-mounted)—two at the bow (forward) and one at the stern (aft).

The ship has two stabilizers (retractable fins located forward-midship) manufactured by Blohm+Voss. Each stabilizer measures 8 m (26 ft) in length and 0.6 m (2 ft) in width. Steering is provided by two semi-balanced rudders (electro-hydraulic).

The ship’s fuel capacity is 1,222 m3, allowing bunkering approximately once per week. Freshwater capacity is 570 tons.

The vessel is equipped with two marine evacuation systems, a total of 2,266 life jackets (plus 140 for children), 18 lifebuoys, four motorized lifeboats (capacity 150 each), 28 liferafts (combined capacity 1,310 persons), one motorized rescue boat (capacity 6), and one work boat (capacity 4). Communication equipment includes satellite transponders.

Vessel dimensions also include:

  • bridge wing to bow distance 32.5 m (107 ft)
  • bridge wing to stern distance 162 m (531 ft)
  • waterline to bridge wing height 22.5 m (74 ft)
  • waterline to mast-top height 39 m (128 ft)
  • waterline to funnel-top height 37 m (121 ft)
  • draft 6.5 m (22 ft)
