Admiral Makarov icebreaker Review
Review of Admiral Makarov icebreaker
The 1975-built MS Admiral Makarov ("ледокол Адмирал Макаров") is an icebreaking vessel owned and operated by the Russian company FESCO (an abbreviation for Far East Shipping Company / Дальневосточное морское пароходство), part of the FESCO Group (headquartered in Vladivostok).
The vessel (IMO number 7347603, Helsinki Shipyard/hull number 399) is currently registered under the Russian flag (MMSI 273148110) and homeported in Murmansk.
One of the Russian icebreaker ships, Admiral Makarov, and its sister ship Krasin (1976-built), are the largest of the four icebreakers in the FESCO fleet. The ship is named after Vice-Admiral Stepan Makarov (1849-1904), who served in the Imperial Russian Navy and was also an oceanographer. The town of Shiritoru on Sakhalin Island was renamed Makarov in his honor in 1946.
Since 2006, Admiral Makarov's itinerary has included services in the Tatar Strait (in the North Pacific Ocean, which separates Sakhalin Island from mainland Russia). This service is part of a 10-year government contract with the shipowner. Along with Krasin icebreaker, Admiral Makarov escorts large-capacity crude oil tankers between the Sakhalin-I oil and gas project on Sakhalin Island and the De-Kastri Oil Terminal (Khabarovsk Krai, Sea of Okhotsk).
Admiral Makarov Vessel Details
FESCO is the largest operator of icebreaker ships in the Russian Far East. The Russian Federation government transferred four icebreaking vessels to the company. In addition to Admiral Makarov, FESCO's fleet includes the diesel-powered icebreakers Kapitan Khlebnikov, Krasin, and Magadan.
The four ships provide assistance in the ice-covered waters of the Russian Far Eastern seas and the Arctic. However, their deployment is not limited to these areas and extends from the Eastern Arctic region to the coast of Antarctica.
The vessel features two dining rooms, a sauna, one swimming pool, one elevator, and one helipad.
