Colon cruise port is located at the end of the Panama Canal (Caribbean Sea). The city is Panama's second-largest (population around 80,000/metro around 220,000) - after the capital Panama City.

On December 14, 2021, NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line announced that starts seasonally to homeport a ship in Panama City (for Panama Canal roundtrips) with Norwegian Jewel (starting on March 20, 2022).

  • The homeporting was based on a multi-year contract (signed with the Panama Tourism Authority) allowing NCL to homeport a liner at two Panamese cruise terminals - Colon and Fuerte Amador (Panama City, on the Pacific Ocean).
  • NCL Jewel's itineraries (starting from Panama City) visit Costa Rica (Puerto Limon), Aruba (Oranjestad), Curacao (Willemstad), Bonaire (Kralendijk), and Colombia (Cartagena), and end in Colon.

Port Colon (locode PAONX) is currently ranked the world's second-largest duty-free port (after Sanya China). The Port was established in 1850 and since 1948 is a "Free Trade Zone" (freeport). Colon Free Trade Zone occupies land area approx 2,4 km2 (~243 hectares/600 acres) and is divided in two areas - the old one is in Colon City and the new one is in the harbor (where are the warehouses.

Originally, Colon was entirely on Manzanillo Island and surrounded by Manzanillo Bay, Limon Bay, and Folks River. However, since the disestablishment of the Panama Canal Zone (aka Canal Zone/November 1903 thru October 1979), its limits have been redefined to include Fort Gulick (former US Army Base), as well three former Canal Zone towns (Coco Solo, Cristobal, Margarita).

A restoration and reconstruction project, which involves historic buildings, monuments, parks and avenues started in late 2014. The First Baptist Church of Colon, Panama, is among the buildings whose renovation was completed.

Colon cruise terminal

Colon Cruise Terminal has two docks - "Colon 2000" and "Cristobal Pier".

Colon 2000 Cruise Terminal

Colon 2000 was constructed at the millennium’s turn. It is in the Province of Colon and its managers are a private company. They invested USD 15 million to develop the project for modern Colon cruise port piers and terminals. It has the greatest efficiency among all Central America’s seaports.

The first part of the project was ready in October 2000. The first Colon cruise Terminal and Pier’s name is “Port of Call.” Here are located the customs.

In February 2008 was developed the second Colon Cruise Port Terminal and Pier is the “Home Port.” It is in service since December 2008. The building has three gates separated for cargo, passengers and luggage.

Colon cruise port terminal building offers native craft boutiques, bar-cafe, lounge areas, duty-free mall, supermarket.

Cristobal Pier Cruise Terminal

The distance between Cristobal Pier and Colon 2000 is 5 km. The taxi rate for the 10-minute journey is $3 roughly. Colon cruise port terminal at Cristobal pier usually welcomes its guest with native dances right in the building. There is also a nice shopping area.

Colón is primarily a gateway to the Panama Canal, Gatún Lake and the historic Caribbean coast. Ships normally dock rather than tender, but sightseeing beyond the secured terminal area requires road transport. Independent walking through central Colón is not recommended because of security concerns.

At a Glance

  • Overall approach: Organized excursion recommended, or independent travel with a pre-arranged licensed driver.
  • Best-known attraction: Agua Clara Visitor Center overlooking the expanded Panama Canal locks.
  • Good longer options: Gatún Lake, Fort San Lorenzo, Portobelo or the Panama Canal Railway.
  • Walking independently: Limit walking to the secured cruise-terminal complex.
  • Terrain and climate: Most visitor sites are not physically demanding, but tropical heat, humidity and heavy rain can make outdoor visits tiring.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Cruise ships generally use Colón 2000, although some calls may use facilities in the Cristóbal area. Colón 2000 is a secured waterfront complex with shops, food outlets and transport services. Terminal assignment can vary, so check the information supplied onboard before arranging a meeting point with an independent operator.

The surrounding city is not a suitable walk-off sightseeing destination. Use a ship excursion, an established local tour company or a licensed taxi arranged at the terminal. Agree on the itinerary, total fare, waiting time and return time before departure. Local buses are not a practical choice for a short cruise call.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Agua Clara Locks and Visitor Center

Recommended time: About 3–4 hours including transport.

This is the most straightforward introduction to the Panama Canal from Colón. Elevated terraces overlook the larger Agua Clara locks, Gatún Lake and the Atlantic approach. Vessel movements are controlled by canal traffic, so seeing a complete lockage cannot be guaranteed.

The visitor center is approximately 20 km (12.4 mi) from Colón and normally requires around 25–35 minutes by road each way. It is practical with a pre-arranged round-trip taxi, but an organized excursion removes the need to coordinate waiting and return transport. Walking at the center is generally easy, with the heat being the main consideration.

Gatún Lake Wildlife Trip

Recommended time: About 4–5 hours.

Small-boat excursions explore channels and forested islands within Gatún Lake, where wildlife may include monkeys, tropical birds and reptiles. The experience also provides a close view of the canal environment and passing commercial vessels.

This is an excursion-based activity rather than a do-it-yourself outing. Transport to the boat landing and the boat journey should be booked together through the cruise line or a reputable operator. Wildlife sightings depend on weather, water conditions and animal activity.

Fort San Lorenzo and the Canal Zone

Recommended time: About 5–6 hours.

Fort San Lorenzo stands above the mouth of the Chagres River in a forested setting west of the canal. The ruins, river views and surrounding tropical landscape make this a good choice for passengers interested in history and nature.

The fort is reached by road and is best visited with a guide or private driver. Expect uneven surfaces, exposed areas and some walking over old stonework. Road and access conditions should be confirmed locally, especially after heavy rain. Some excursions combine the fort with Agua Clara, but this requires a sufficiently long port call.

Portobelo

Recommended time: About 5–6 hours.

Portobelo has colonial fortifications, a sheltered Caribbean bay and the Church of San Felipe, known for its Black Christ statue. The principal sights are relatively close together, although paths around the forts can be uneven and exposed.

Portobelo is approximately 50 km (31.1 mi) from Colón. Travel commonly takes about one hour each way but can be longer with traffic or road delays. A guided excursion or pre-arranged driver is preferable. Combining Portobelo with additional distant attractions can make the day rushed.

Panama Canal Railway

Recommended time: Usually around 6 hours as a cruise excursion.

The railway follows the canal corridor between the Atlantic and Pacific sides, passing Gatún Lake and rainforest scenery. Tourist passenger departures are limited and often arranged specifically for cruise groups; it should not be treated as a frequent public service.

Book this experience in advance through the cruise line or an authorized operator. Excursions may combine the train with coach transport and a canal visitor center, so the exact direction and itinerary can vary.

Can You Visit Panama City?

Panama City is roughly 75–80 km (46.6–49.7 mi) from Colón. Driving generally requires at least 1.5 hours each way and may take longer with traffic. Although possible during a long call, the round trip consumes a substantial part of the day.

An organized excursion is strongly recommended if visiting Panama City, Casco Viejo or the Pacific-side canal facilities. Short or medium-length calls are better spent at Agua Clara, Gatún Lake or another attraction on the Atlantic side.

Staying Near the Ship

Passengers who do not want an excursion can remain within the secured terminal complex for shopping, refreshments and views of the waterfront. This is the simplest option, but it does not provide a meaningful tour of Colón or the Panama Canal.

A self-guided city walking route is not recommended. The most useful independent alternative is a short round-trip visit to Agua Clara with a licensed driver who waits during the visit.

Practical Tips

  • Confirm the ship's berth and passenger exit before arranging an independent pickup.
  • Use transport from inside the secured terminal or book a reputable operator in advance.
  • Do not carry valuables unnecessarily or wander through central Colón on foot.
  • Reserve Agua Clara tickets in advance when possible and check the current visitor-center schedule.
  • Bring sun protection, drinking water, insect repellent and light rain protection.
  • Allow a substantial return margin. Traffic, tropical rain, canal-area road controls and delays on longer excursions can affect journey times.
  • For Panama City, Portobelo, Fort San Lorenzo or a railway trip, a ship-operated excursion offers the greatest protection if transport is delayed.
