MS Thurgau Silence Review

Review of MS Thurgau Silence

MS Thurgau Silence cruise ship (“MS Bellevue” when chartered by Phoenix Reisen) is an almost noise- and vibration-free riverboat thanks to its design, which separates the machinery and passenger areas.

Itineraries operate along the Danube and Rhine rivers, with roundtrip departures from the homeports of Basel (Rhine) and Passau (Danube).

The vessel (ENI number 09948013) is Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057616) and registered in Basel.

Cabins

The ship’s comfortable and stylish staterooms are uniformly sized at 13 m² (140 ft²). All cabins feature individually controlled air conditioning, TV, radio, telephone, safe and an en-suite bathroom (shower and WC).

In the standard staterooms, one bed can be folded against the wall during the day, while the other doubles as a cozy sofa. Superior cabins offer a double bed. Middle and Upper Deck cabins are fitted with French balconies.

The ship is non-smoking, with smoking permitted only in designated outdoor areas.

MS Thurgau Silence Wiki

MS Thurgau Silence (ENI number 09948013) belongs to the TwinCruiser boat type, in which the passenger section is structurally separated from the drive unit. TwinCruiser-class riverboats feature two independent hulls linked by clutches. This configuration greatly reduces the transmission of vibrations and noise.

The Switzerland-flagged vessel Thurgau Silence (inaugurated on April 26, 2006, as MS Bellevue) is powered by two MTU marine diesel engines (model 12V-4000 M60) with a total power output of 1.6 MW. MTU Friedrichshafen — a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of diesel engines and propulsion systems — builds engines for ships (passenger and cargo vessels), heavy vehicles, military vehicles and trains, covering a power range from 20 kW to 10 MW (up to 13,410 HP). The company also supplies Mercedes-Benz industrial engines and gas turbines.

The ship’s propulsion system consists of two four-wing Veth rudder propellers and one bow thruster (Jastram Azimuth Jet). Onboard energy is provided by three diesel generator sets (310 kVA each, model Cummins KT-1150-G).
