    MS Bergensfjord ferry Wiki

The cruiseferry’s name honors the SS Bergensfjord — a 1913-built transatlantic ocean liner that served the Norwegian America Line, carrying cargo and passengers on the Norway–USA route (OsloKristiansandStavangerBergenNew York City). These were direct crossings between Norway and the USA, without stops at continental European ports. The classic liner was built in Birkenhead, England, by Cammell Laird (a shipbuilding company founded in 1828). SS Bergensfjord’s maiden voyage departed Norway on September 25, 1913. The vessel was scrapped in 1959 in La Spezia, Italy.

The cruise ferry Bergensfjord was constructed for FJORD LINE at Stocznia Gdanska SA (shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, hull and superstructure) and Fosen Mekaniske Verksteder (Rissa, Norway, outfitting). The shipbuilding contract was signed on April 13, 2010, for two cruiseferries scheduled for delivery in March 2012 (Stavangerfjord) and October 2012 (Bergensfjord). The contract was signed in Bergen, with a total value of EUR 103 million (EUR 51.5 million per vessel). The agreement was between Fjord Line Danmark AS (future shipowner, represented by CEO Ingvald Fardal) and Bergen Group Fosen AS (shipbuilder, represented by CEO Pål Engebretsen).

The marine architecture was designed by Falkum-Hansen Design (owned by Finn Falkum Hansen), who also created the designs for Hurtigruten ships Midnatsol (2003) and Trollfjord–Eirik Raude (2002). Interestingly, Fosen Yard AS also built the world’s largest privately owned cruise ship — MS The World.

The construction of Bergensfjord (Stocznia Gdanska hull number 88) began on December 15, 2011, with the keel-laying ceremony. The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on March 1, 2013, and delivered to FJORD LINE on February 3, 2014. She is Denmark-flagged (MMSI number 219348000) and powered by four Rolls-Royce marine engines running on LNG (model BV12PG), with a combined power output of 22.4 MW. The integrated Promas propulsion system combines the rudder and propeller turbines for enhanced efficiency.

In February–March 2018, MS Bergensfjord entered drydock for an extensive conversion and refurbishment project that increased cabin capacity by 20% (adding 64 new staterooms and 210 more beds) and introduced a new restaurant, the Winter Garden, located aft. The new forward cabins on Deck 10 are Luxe-category accommodations, larger and featuring expansive windows. Additional new cabins include quad “truck cabins” (shared cabins) designed for freight passengers, families, and solo travelers. Her fleetmate Stavangerfjord underwent a similar refit in November–December 2017.
