Spirit of the Douro Review
Review of Spirit of the Douro
Spirit of the Douro cruise ship (formerly "Douro Serenity") is a top-luxury riverboat inaugurated in 2017, with sisterships of the same design Douro Elegance (2017) and Douro Splendour (2018). Spirit of the Douro operates on the Douro River in Portugal, offering roundtrip itineraries from Oporto City to destinations in Portugal and Spain.
The Portugal-flagged vessel is owned by the Portuguese travel company Douro Azul (a fully owned subsidiary and travel brand of Mystic Cruises). Until 2020, she was exclusively chartered by the river cruise tour companies Riviera Travel (UK) and TravelMarvel (APT-owned sister brand of AmaWaterways).
In July 2020, Nicko Cruises (a subsidiary and travel brand of Mystic Cruises) announced that Douro Serenity would join its fleet in 2021, with 36 scheduled departures from Oporto.
Since 2024, the ship (renamed "Spirit of the Douro") has been chartered by Saga Cruises. The UK-based company (part of Saga Group) primarily targets the British market.

The vessel is Portugal-flagged (MMSI number 263673934) and registered in Lisbon. The shipbuilder is WestSEA (shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal).
The ship offers top-class hotel amenities and facilities designed to provide an exceptional river cruising experience in Portugal's Douro Valley wine region. The cozy Bar Lounge is stocked with fine wines and premium spirits and features a small bow terrace with open-air seating. The Dining Room Restaurant operates with a single open seating arrangement. Both the Lounge and the Restaurant are forward-located and feature floor-to-ceiling windows.
The vessel also features a spacious wellness center (spa and fitness area), a Boutique Gift Shop, a large outdoor swimming pool on the top deck, and a roof-covered outdoor lounge equipped with solar panels.

The Main Deck houses the Restaurant, which offers open seating with tables for 4 to 8 guests. A buffet breakfast (with an omelet station) is served daily. Lunch is buffet-style, with lighter menu options also available. Dinner is a 4-course, waiter-served experience. Early breakfast is available in the Bar Lounge, along with light lunch options served in the lounge and on the Sun Deck (alfresco dining).
The onboard Spa is located on the Main Deck, with treatments available for advance booking. A spacious Fitness Room is located on the Lower Deck. A standout feature of the vessel is the top-deck outdoor swimming pool and large sunbathing area with premium loungers. The scenic Douro Valley provides spectacular views throughout the voyage.
All cabin decks are fully air-conditioned and connected via a lift and a wide staircase. The Sun Deck is accessible by stairs only.
Decks and Cabins
Most Spirit of the Douro staterooms are sized 15 m² (160 ft²), which is standard for French Balcony cabins on 5-star European riverboats.
All cabins feature amenities including polished hardwood entry doors, high-quality wooden furniture with fine fabrics, hotel-style beds (two twins convertible to a double), premium bedding, and en-suite marble bathrooms (glass shower, WC, single-sink vanity, plush towels, and branded toiletries). Additional features include individually controlled air conditioning, wall-mounted flat-screen HDTV (with satellite reception), hairdryer, wardrobe, mirrored dressing table with chair, electronic safe (in the closet), telephone, tea and coffee-making facilities, and 220V power outlets (2-prong; UK and North American guests require an adapter or converter).
Lower Deck cabins are designed for single travelers. These smaller staterooms (14 m² / 150 ft²) feature one fixed (non-opening) window positioned near the ceiling. These are designated "single cabins" and can be booked without a single supplement. Nicko Cruises applies a 100% supplement for all other stateroom categories.
Standard-category cabins are French Balcony staterooms sized 15 m² (160 ft²). They feature an electronically controlled sliding window that lowers horizontally and opens to a railing (false balcony), providing unobstructed views of the passing riverside scenery. Each cabin also includes a table and two chairs for in-room dining.
Superior Suites (Upper Deck) are sized 22 m² (235 ft²) and include a spacious living area, floor-to-ceiling windows, a step-out balcony, and a separate French balcony with a sitting area (table and two chairs).
Deluxe Suites (aft on Upper Deck) are sized 30 m² (325 ft²) and feature a larger living area, two floor-to-ceiling windows, a step-out balcony, a French balcony with a sitting area (table and two chairs), a walk-in closet, and a bedroom with two floor-to-ceiling windows.

The vessel has 4 decks, three of which feature cabins.
