Avignon (port locode FRAVN) is a Rhone River cruise port located in Provence (south-eastern France). The city has a population of around 90,000.

In the Avignon Papacy period (1309-1377), seven popes resided in Avignon. The city was bought in 1348 by Pope Clement VI from Joanna I of Naples. Its papal control persisted until 1791, when, during the French Revolution, it became part of France.

Among Avignon's historic landmarks are the Cathedral (Notre-Dame des Doms, located next to the Palais des Papes /now a museum), Pont d'Avignon, Synagogue, Lapidary Museum, Calvet Museum, churches, and chapels.

On cruise shore excursions/roundtrip bus tours from Avignon are visited Pont du Gard (Roman aqueduct), Roussillon, Saint-Remy-de-Provence (famous for the Roman Glanum city's ruins and the Saint-Paul Asylum), as well as scenic vineyards.

At a Glance

Easy independently. Avignon is one of the most convenient Rhône river ports for independent sightseeing. River vessels normally berth along Boulevard de l’Oulle, immediately outside the medieval walls. The historic center, Pont Saint-Bénézet and Palais des Papes are all reachable on foot.

Most of the old city is compact, but expect cobbled streets and a steady uphill approach to the palace and Rocher des Doms. Passengers with limited mobility may prefer the tourist train or a taxi for part of the visit.

Getting from the River Berth

River ships generally dock at one of several positions along the Rhône at Boulevard de l’Oulle. The precise gangway location can vary, and vessels may be moored alongside one another.

  • Porte de l’Oulle: usually a short, level walk from the berth and a convenient entrance through the city walls.
  • Pont Saint-Bénézet: approximately 5–15 minutes on foot, depending on the vessel’s position.
  • Palais des Papes: generally 10–20 minutes on foot, with an uphill section near the palace.
  • Transport: taxis and local buses are useful for Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and regional trips, but are unnecessary for the principal sights inside Avignon.

Always confirm the vessel’s exact berth and all-aboard time before leaving, particularly when several river ships are docked together.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Palais des Papes and Pont Saint-Bénézet

Allow about 3–4 hours for Avignon’s two signature monuments and the surrounding streets. Walk through Porte de l’Oulle to Place de l’Horloge and continue to the Palais des Papes. A palace visit normally occupies a substantial part of the morning or afternoon, while the surviving section of Pont Saint-Bénézet requires less time.

This combination is easy independently, although advance admission may save time on busy summer days. The palace contains numerous steps and is not fully accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.

Historic Streets, Squares and Les Halles

For a less structured visit, explore Place de l’Horloge, the lanes around Place du Palais, the church and square of Saint-Pierre, Les Halles market and Rue des Teinturiers. Allow 2–3 hours without museum visits. The route is mainly level apart from the palace quarter and works well independently.

Les Halles is most useful earlier in the day; visitors arriving later should treat it as an optional stop rather than the focus of the walk.

Rocher des Doms and the Rhône

The gardens above the palace provide broad views over the Rhône, Pont Saint-Bénézet, Barthelasse Island and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Reaching them involves an uphill walk and some steps, but the viewpoint fits naturally into a palace-area visit. Allow 45–75 minutes for the gardens and nearby viewpoints.

Villeneuve-lès-Avignon

The town across the Rhône offers Tour Philippe-le-Bel, La Chartreuse, Fort Saint-André and elevated views back toward Avignon. Local bus line 5 connects Porte de l’Oulle with Villeneuve-lès-Avignon; a taxi is simpler when time is limited. Allow at least 3–4 hours including transport and choose only one or two major sites.

Independent with some planning or transport. Villeneuve’s attractions are spread out, and several approaches are steep. Check the return bus timetable before setting out.

Self-Guided Walking Tours

Essential Avignon Walk

Route: river berth – Porte de l’Oulle – Place Crillon – Place de l’Horloge – Palais des Papes – Notre-Dame des Doms – Rocher des Doms – Pont Saint-Bénézet – river berth.

Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: about 40–50 minutes. Recommended total time: 2–3 hours without entering the palace, or 3.5–4.5 hours with monument visits.

Difficulty: moderate. Much of the route is straightforward, but there are cobbles, slopes and steps around the palace and gardens. From Pont Saint-Bénézet, follow the riverfront south to return directly to the ship.

Old Town and Market Walk

Route: Porte de l’Oulle – Place Crillon – Place de l’Horloge – Place du Palais – Place Saint-Pierre – Les Halles – Rue des Teinturiers – Rue de la République – Place de l’Horloge – Porte de l’Oulle.

Distance: approximately 4 km (2.5 mi). Pure walking time: about 1 hour. Recommended total time: 2.5–3.5 hours with stops.

Difficulty: easy to moderate. The route is mostly level, although paving can be uneven. Rue des Teinturiers is the farthest point from the berth; passengers short on time can turn back after Les Halles.

Barthelasse Island

A free seasonal river shuttle normally carries pedestrians and bicycles across to Barthelasse Island near Pont Saint-Bénézet. The opposite bank offers lawns, a towpath and particularly good views of Avignon’s walls, bridge and palace.

Allow 1–1.5 hours for the crossing and a short riverside walk. Operation can depend on season, river conditions and local schedules, so verify that the shuttle is running before relying on it. If it is unavailable, keep the visit within the walled city rather than attempting the island on a tight schedule.

Excursions Beyond Avignon

Pont du Gard

The Roman aqueduct is a realistic half-day destination, but direct public transport is not convenient enough for a short port call. A prearranged excursion, private driver or taxi is preferable. Allow roughly 4–5 hours including transfers and time at the site.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Rhône Wine Region

Wine-focused visits require road transport and advance arrangements. A half-day guided excursion is more practical than trying to coordinate buses, wineries and the ship’s departure independently.

Provence Villages

Les Baux-de-Provence, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and the Luberon villages are better suited to longer calls with organized transport. Combining several distant places consumes much of the day and leaves less protection against traffic delays.

Practical Tips

  • Avignon is busiest during the summer festival period, when central streets, restaurants and attractions can be crowded.
  • Wear shoes suitable for cobbles and polished stone, particularly if visiting the palace.
  • Summer afternoons can be very hot; carry water and use the shaded squares for breaks.
  • The strong Mistral wind can make exposed riverfront and viewpoint areas uncomfortable.
  • For independent regional trips, arrange return transport in advance and leave a generous margin for road delays.
  • Plan to be back near the river berth at least 30–45 minutes before the ship’s stated all-aboard time, or earlier if instructed by the cruise line.
