Dusseldorf is a Rhine River cruise port and the capital city of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia state. By population (around 0,6 million, metro over 11,3 million) the city is ranked Germany's 7th-largest. Dusseldorf is an international financial and business center, famous for its trade and fashion fairs. Here are headquartered two DAX and one "Fortune Global 500" companies. Messe Dusseldorf organizes ~20% of the world's premier trade shows. In February-March each year, Dusseldorf holds the Rhenish Carnival celebrations on Rhine.
Dusseldorf has become one of Germany's top telecommunications centers. With 2 of the 4 big German providers of mobile frequencies, E-Plus and D2 Vodafone, the city leads the mobile phone market in Germany. There are many foreign communication and information technology companies in Dusseldorf, including Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, GTS and NTT. There are also 18 internet service providers situated in the capital of North-Rhine Westphalia. Two airlines have their headquarters in the city: LTU International and Eurowings.
The city of Dusseldorf is famous for the Altbier (draft beer), having a total of 5 pub-breweries, 4 of which are located in the Old Town (Altstadt). Seasonal "Christmas beer" botled variations are available for purchasing starting mid-November. Every Christmas, in downtown is hosted one of the biggest German Christmas markets. The Christmas festival occurs from November 17 until December 23, each year. The Christmas fest brings the city a large portion of tourism as many people from nearby regions come to drink hot chocolate and mulled wine and watch craftsman create art. The event contains small wooden buildings clustered in the middle of Dusseldorf for all citizens to enjoy. The event has an old European feel and is very lively.
Dusseldorf cruise terminal
River cruise ships in Dusseldorf dock at Rheinuferpromenade ("Rhine promenade"). This waterfront street connects the old town with the modern harbor. The promenade is lined with numerous cafes and bars.
The promenade has length of 1928 m / 6330 ft and is the city's most important north-south connection, stretching from Oberkasseler bridge along the old town front to Landtag. It has walking and cycling lanes, over 600 trees and lots of riverfront space for strolling. From Freitreppe (at the Burgplatz) you can enjoy the view of passing ships.
Düsseldorf is well suited to a relaxed river-cruise call: the Old Town, Rhine promenade and Königsallee can be combined without a lengthy excursion. Easy independently from central berths; independent with some planning or transport from northern landing stages. Check your ship’s exact berth before deciding how much walking to include.
Getting from the Ship to the Sights
River cruise ships dock at landing stages along the Rhine rather than using an ocean-cruise terminal. Central berths include Joseph-Beuys-Ufer and Robert-Lehr-Ufer around the Oberkasseler Bridge and Rheinterrasse. From this area, allow roughly 10–25 minutes to walk south along the waterfront to Burgplatz, depending on the precise landing stage.
Other ships use berths farther north, towards the Theodor-Heuss Bridge or Rotterdamer Straße. These are less convenient for a short walk-off visit: consider a ship-arranged transfer, taxi or public transport. Shuttle provision depends on the operator and call; do not assume one will be available.
The central promenade is pedestrian-friendly. Heinrich-Heine-Allee is a useful public-transport hub near the Old Town, while the best stop for your ship depends on its berth. Use the current Rheinbahn journey planner and give taxi drivers the landing-stage name and street, rather than simply asking for “Düsseldorf port.”
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Old Town, Riverside and a Local Food Stop
Allow 2–3 hours, plus the walk or transfer from your berth. Explore Burgplatz, the twisted spire of St. Lambertus, and Marktplatz with its historic town hall. Continue through the compact Old Town for an Altbier brewery stop or lunch, then return along the Rhine promenade. Carlsplatz food market is another practical lunch option from Monday to Saturday.
This is the simplest independent choice for a first visit or a short call. Most walking is level, although cobbles, busy pedestrian streets and access between the quay and upper promenade can slow progress.
Königsallee and Hofgarten
Allow 1.5–2.5 hours from the Old Town. Walk inland to Königsallee for its canal, bridges and shops, then continue towards Kö-Bogen and the Hofgarten for a greener return through central Düsseldorf. This works well as an extension to an Old Town visit and requires no transport once you are in the centre.
Choose this option for an easy city stroll rather than a packed sightseeing schedule. Most shops close on Sundays, but the canal and park remain worthwhile walking destinations.
Rhine Tower and MedienHafen
Allow 2.5–4 hours from Burgplatz, including the return. Follow the promenade south past the old harbour basin and state parliament to the Rheinturm, then continue to the curved Gehry buildings in the MedienHafen. The walk from Burgplatz to the Gehry buildings is approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi) each way.
The route is mostly flat and practical independently, but exposed in wet or windy weather. Allow extra time for the tower’s observation deck and any queue; its value depends on visibility. A taxi back can reduce walking, particularly if your ship is berthed north of the centre.
Benrath Palace and Park
Allow about 4–5 hours from central Düsseldorf. Benrath is a separate outing in the southern part of the city, rather than an extension of the Old Town walk. The pink palace, formal gardens and wooded park suit passengers who prefer gardens to shopping or brewery visits.
Independent travel is practical with planning: use public transport to Schloss Benrath or arrange a taxi. Allow approximately an hour each way by public transport from the central sightseeing area, including access and waiting, and check the current connection. Confirm palace admission arrangements before travelling if the interior is your main reason for visiting. A ship excursion is convenient when berth transfers or a short call make the timing awkward.
Self-Guided Old Town Walking Route
Start and finish: Burgplatz, reached on foot from central berths or by transfer from farther north. Distance: approximately 2 km (1.2 mi). Walking time: 30–40 minutes without stops. Recommended total: 1.5–2.5 hours. Difficulty: easy, with some cobbles and uneven paving.
- Burgplatz: Start beside the castle tower and riverside steps for views across the Rhine.
- St. Lambertus and Stiftsplatz: Walk north to the church with the twisted spire; enter only if open and services permit.
- Marktplatz: Turn back through the Old Town to the town hall and Jan Wellem equestrian statue.
- Bolkerstraße: Follow the lively pedestrian street for brewery restaurants and a possible refreshment stop.
- Carlsplatz: Continue south through the Old Town to browse the food market when trading.
- Alter Hafen: Head towards the restored old harbour basin for a quieter waterfront stop.
- Rhine promenade: Return north along the river to Burgplatz.
Add the outward and return walking time between Burgplatz and your ship. For a shorter outing, leave Bolkerstraße towards the river after your Old Town stops and omit Carlsplatz and Alter Hafen.
Practical Tips for Your Call
- Confirm the return location: Record your berth name, ship contact number and all-aboard time before leaving. Ask whether the vessel will remain at the same landing stage.
- Keep a return margin: For central sightseeing, aim to reach the berth at least 30 minutes before all-aboard. Allow more when using taxis, public transport or visiting Benrath.
- Check access needs: Gangway gradients vary with river level. Passengers with reduced mobility should confirm the actual ship-to-street route with the crew.
- Choose one main outing: Old Town plus Königsallee, or Old Town plus MedienHafen, makes a more manageable short call than attempting every district.
- Use the waterfront for walking: A promenade or park stroll is the practical nature option during a city call; swimming in the Rhine is unsafe because of currents and shipping.
