Belmond Hirondelle barge Review
Review of Belmond Hirondelle barge
The 1928-built Belmond Hirondelle barge is a former Dutch cargo vessel that was transformed into a luxury hotel barge in 1992. She was refurbished again in 2002. The 8-passenger barge cruises through Southern Burgundy and the Franche-Comté region, both renowned for their vineyards.
Accommodations on the ship include four staterooms, each sized 9.3 m² (100 ft²). Three cabins are configured with twin beds, while the fourth has a double bed. All en-suite bathrooms are shower-only and stocked with L'Occitane bath products (soap, shower gel, shampoo).
Belmond Hirondelle cruise packages typically include all meals paired with complimentary local wines and a French cheese board, an open bar, and all shore excursions (such as guided tours in Besançon, including Victor Hugo's birthplace). The ship also provides complimentary bicycles for guest use along the route. Optional activities such as golf tours and hot air balloon rides are available at an additional cost.
Public areas onboard include a saloon (lounge and bar) and a sun deck with a hot tub and loungers. The ship is fully air-conditioned and operated by a crew of four: a chef, tour guide, hostess, and skipper (Captain).
