Belmond Road to Mandalay Review

Review of Belmond Road to Mandalay

One of the largest Irrawaddy River cruise ships, Belmond Road to Mandalay's itinerary offers access to unique places in Myanmar (Burma) in a traditional "Orient-Express" style.

Originally built in Germany (1964-launched as a Rhine River cruiser), the vessel was later purchased and refurbished by the travel company Orient-Express (today Belmond Ltd). After the acquisition, it was transported to Myanmar and since 1995 operates on Irrawaddy River Itineraries varying from 3 to 11 nights. Roundtrip departures are from Yangon (Rangoon), and shorter segments offer disembarkation in Mandalay.

Inside this stylish riverboat, the emphasis rests on traditional comforts combined with delightful luxury. Road to Mandalay accommodates up to 82 passengers per voyage. The ship has a swimming pool, wellbeing and fitness area, a vast observation deck. A resident doctor is at hand in case of illnesses or emergencies. English-, German-, Spanish- and French-speaking tour guides are available, too.

All cabins are with outward-facing windows that offer perfect views of the riverside scenery. All staterooms offer air-conditioning, satellite TV, iPod docking station, plenty of closet space, luxurious pillows and deluxe bed linens. The spacious en-suite bathrooms are stocked with locally-made soaps.

The Road to Mandalay cruise ship offers evening marionette and dance shows presented by local performers. During day time, lectures and demonstrations are scheduled allowing guests to enhance their understanding of local culture and traditions. The ship has a crew of onboard chefs providing the best of local and international cuisine.
