Belmond Road to Mandalay Review

Review of Belmond Road to Mandalay

One of the largest Irrawaddy River cruise ships, Belmond Road to Mandalay offers itineraries that provide access to unique destinations in Myanmar (Burma), all in a traditional "Orient-Express" style.

Originally built in Germany and launched in 1964 as a Rhine River cruiser, the vessel was later acquired and refurbished by the travel company Orient-Express (now Belmond Ltd). After the acquisition, she was transported to Myanmar and has operated on the Irrawaddy River since 1995, offering itineraries ranging from 3 to 11 nights. Roundtrip departures are from Yangon (Rangoon), with shorter segments allowing disembarkation in Mandalay.

Inside this elegant riverboat, the focus is on traditional comfort paired with refined luxury. Road to Mandalay accommodates up to 82 passengers per voyage. The ship features a swimming pool, a wellness and fitness area, and a spacious observation deck. A resident doctor is available for any illnesses or emergencies. English-, German-, Spanish-, and French-speaking tour guides are also onboard.

All cabins have outward-facing windows, offering uninterrupted views of the riverside landscape. Each stateroom is equipped with air-conditioning, satellite TV, an iPod docking station, ample closet space, plush pillows, and deluxe bed linens. The spacious en-suite bathrooms are stocked with locally-made soaps.

Road to Mandalay hosts evening marionette and dance performances by local artists. During the day, guests can attend scheduled lectures and demonstrations to deepen their understanding of local culture and traditions. A team of onboard chefs prepares exquisite local and international cuisine.
