Club Med 2 Review

Review of Club Med 2

The 1992-built yacht Club Med 2 is a modern sailing cruise ship owned by Club Med Cruises. Marketed as a "cruise ship" (mega-yacht), she is powered by seven computer-controlled sails combined with traditional diesel-electric propulsion (four diesel generators powering two electric motors).

History - Construction and Ownership

The 400-passenger Club Med 2 is owned and operated by Club Med SA (formerly Club Mediterranee), a French corporation (part of Fosun Group) specializing in premium all-inclusive vacation packages at its privately-owned resorts worldwide. Her sistership, Club Med 1, was acquired by Windstar Cruises and renamed Wind Surf (1998).

Fosun Group (officially Fosun International Ltd) is a Chinese holding company founded in 1992, headquartered in Shanghai, and incorporated in Hong Kong in December 2004. With offices in 16 countries, Fosun is one of China's largest privately-owned companies. As of 2019, it reported total assets of USD 102.6 billion, revenue of USD 20.7 billion, and net income of USD 2.1 billion. Listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (SEHK 656) since July 2007, Fosun invests in and manages a diverse portfolio of businesses across industries including banking, insurance, asset management, entertainment (Cirque du Soleil), fashion (Ahava, Caruso, Folli Follie, Lanvin, Silver Cross, St John, Tom Tailor, Wolford), food and beverages, private hospitals, real estate, retail, and tourism.

The 5-masted Club Med 2 is a computer-controlled schooner and one of the world’s largest sailing ships. She was fully drydock reconstructed in 1996, her interior was completely redesigned in 2008, and she was most recently refurbished in 2022 (see refurbishment review in the Wiki section).

The vessel (IMO number 9007491) is France-flagged (MMSI 227194000) and registered in Mata-Utu/Wallis and Futuna.

In 2008, the yacht’s interior was fully revamped by Geneva-based interior designer Sophie Jacquemin.

With a draft of just 5 m / 16 ft, the vessel can sail close to shore, ideal for coastal navigation itineraries.

Onboard services are provided by 214 staff and crew, mostly from Mauritius.

Decks and Cabins

MS Club Med 2 staterooms (186 total / 372 berths) include 1x Armateur Suite (40 m² / 430 ft²), 10x Owner's Suites (36 m² / 390 ft²), 5x Deluxe Cabins (24 m² / 260 ft²), and 170x Club Superior Cabins (18 m² / 195 ft²).

Club Superior Cabins are located on Deck B-Borneo (55 cabins/lower deck), Deck C-Caraibes (67 cabins/midship), and Deck D-Desirade (48 cabins/upper deck).

All passenger cabins are exterior-facing (with sea views) and configured for double occupancy. Some Superior staterooms accommodate a third guest.

The vessel has 6 passenger-accessible decks (of 8 total), with cabins on 4 decks.

Two elevators (forward and aft) connect all passenger decks.

The ship’s 8 decks offer a combined surface area of approximately 2000 m² / 21,530 ft².

Refurbishment 2022 Review

The multimillion-dollar drydock refit and refurbishment were completed in December 2022. The project included a complete redesign and renovation of all public areas—restaurants, bars, lounges, wellness facilities—and all staterooms, featuring new furniture and upgraded amenities.

The gym was equipped with new cardio machines, soft lighting, and soundproof flooring. Club Med Spa by Sothys was enhanced with new treatments and updated exercise programs, including outdoor yoga classes on the sundeck.

Enhancements to Le Magellan Restaurant include live cooking demonstrations and new menus developed in collaboration with Ferrandi Paris—a French culinary arts and hospitality management school. The seasonally rotating dishes are inspired by the local cuisine of the cruise itinerary’s regions and destinations.

The vessel’s five sails were also remodeled.

Club Med 2’s previous major drydock refit was completed in 2008.
