MS Thurgau Ultra Review

Review of MS Thurgau Ultra

The 2008-built MS Thurgau Ultra is a river cruise ship of the upscale deluxe class. This large riverboat is particularly quiet thanks to its “TwinCruiser” design, which separates the passenger and machinery areas.

The ship cruises on the Rhine and Danube, with itineraries departing from homeports Passau, Germany and Basel, Switzerland, as well as from Nuremberg, Germany and Budapest, Hungary.

The vessel (ENI number 04806540) is Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057639) and registered in Basel.

The ship offers predominantly suites, providing generous space for each passenger. All cabins are comfortable and stylish, equipped with air conditioning, LCD TV, radio, hairdryer, telephone, shower and WC. All cabins on the middle and upper decks additionally feature a safe and minibar. Passenger accommodations range from 12 m² / 130 ft² (single cabins) to 30 m² / 325 ft² (Queen Suites). Single cabins and the mini-suites on the main deck have non-opening windows. Junior and Deluxe Suites on the middle and upper decks feature panoramic windows that open to the floor (French balconies). Queen Suites on the upper deck offer separate living and sleeping areas and a private walk-in balcony with two armchairs and a table.

The dining room is spacious and accommodates all guests in a single, open-seating arrangement. It offers panoramic views and features elegant wooden furnishings and artwork. Breakfast is buffet-style, while lunch and dinner are waiter-served and present a fusion of Western and Asian cuisine. Vegetarian dishes are always available, and a fresh salad bar is offered at lunch. Complimentary coffee and tea are available from 6:00 a.m. on the sun deck throughout the day. Local mineral water is provided daily in all cabins, with additional bottles available upon request. Soft drinks, wine, beer and spirits are not included in the cruise fare but may be purchased onboard.

Thurgau Ultra’s outdoor Sun Deck is furnished with comfortable reclining chairs, a self-service coffee and tea station, and a bar where guests can enjoy the ever-changing river landscapes. The Sun Deck also features a covered observation area. A small onboard library offers a selection of English-language books. The boutique shop sells local handmade souvenirs, handicrafts, postcards and a limited selection of toiletries.

MS Thurgau Ultra Wiki

MS Thurgau Ultra (ENI number 04806540) belongs to the TwinCruiser boat type, in which the passenger section is structurally separated from the drive unit. TwinCruiser-class riverboats feature two independent hulls linked by clutches. This configuration minimizes the transmission of vibrations and noise.

The Switzerland-flagged vessel Thurgau Ultra (inaugurated on June 21, 2008, as Premicon Queen) is powered by two MTU marine diesel engines (model 12V-4000 M60) with a total output of 1.6 MW. MTU Friedrichshafen — a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of diesel engines and propulsion systems — produces engines for ships (passenger and cargo vessels), heavy vehicles, military vehicles and trains, covering a power range from 20 kW to 10 MW (up to 13,410 HP). The company also supplies Mercedes-Benz industrial engines and gas turbines.

The ship’s propulsion system consists of two four-wing Veth rudder propellers and one bow thruster (Jastram Azimuth Jet). Onboard energy supply is provided by three diesel generator sets (310 kVA each, model Cummins KT-1150-G).
