MS Thurgau Ultra Review

Review of MS Thurgau Ultra

The 2008-built MS Thurgau Ultra is a cruise ship of the upscale deluxe class. This large riverboat is particularly quiet due to the so-called "twin cruiser" design allowing passenger and machine areas to be separated.

The ship cruises on Rhine and Danube, with itineraries departing, respectively,  from homeports Passau Germany and Basel Switzerland, and from Nuremberg Germany and Budapest Hungary.

The vessel (ENI number 04806540) is Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057639) and registered in Basel.

As staterooms, the ship offers almost exclusively suites with plenty of space for each passenger. All cabins are comfortable and stylish, equipped with air conditioning, LCDTV, radio, hairdryer, phone, shower and WC. There is also a safe and minibar in all cabins on the middle and upper decks. Passenger accommodations are sized between 12 m2 / 130 ft2 (single cabin) and 30 m2 / 325 ft2 (queen suite). Single cabins and the mini-suites on the main deck feature a non-opening window. Junior and Deluxe suites are located on the middle and upper decks and have a panoramic window that opens to the ground (French balcony). Queen Suites on the upper deck boast separate living and sleeping areas, as well as a walk-in balcony with two armchairs and a table.

The ship's dining room is spacious and seats all guests in a single open seating arrangement. It offers panoramic views and is originally fashioned in wooden furnishings and artwork. There is buffet-style breakfast, whereas lunch and dinner are waiter-served and offer a fusion of western and Asian cuisine. Vegetarian dishes are always offered and a fresh salad bar is arranged at lunch. Complimentary coffee and tea are available from 6:00 a.m. on the sun deck throughout the day. Local mineral water is provided daily in all cabins. Additional bottles are provided on request. Soft drinks, wine, beer and alcoholic drinks are not included in the cruise fare but available as an addition.

Thurgau Ultra's outdoor sun deck is equipped with comfortable reclining chairs, a self-service coffee and tea counter, and a bar from where travelers can watch the passing, ever-changing landscapes. The sundeck also has a covered observation area. There is a library onboard with a selection of English books. The small boutique shop sells a collection of local (hand-made) souvenirs, handicrafts, postcards, a limited selection of toiletries.

MS Thurgau Ultra Wiki

MS Thurgau Ultra (ENI number 04806540) belongs to the TwinCruiser boat type, in which passenger sections are structurally separated from the drive unit. TwinCruiser-class riverboats have two separate hulls linked to each other by clutches. The advantage of such separating is that the transmission of vibrations and noises can be mostly avoided.

The Switzerland-flagged vessel Thurgau Ultra (inaugurated on June 21, 2008, as Premicon Queen) is powered by two MTU marine diesel engines (model 12V-4000 M60) with total power output 1,6 MW. The engine builder MTU Friedrichshafen is subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems and among the world's largest manufacturers of diesel engines and propulsion systems. MTU produces diesel engines for ships (passenger and cargo vessels), heavy vehicles, military vehicles and trains in the power range 20 kW to 10 MW (up to 13410 HP output) and also sells Mercedes-Benz engines for industrial applications and gas turbines.

The ship's propulsion system is based on two 4-wing Veth rudder propellers plus one bow thruster (Jastram Azimuth Jet). Onboard energy supply is provided by three diesel generator sets (310 kVA, model Cummins KT-1150-G).
