During drydock refurbishment 2018, the ferry (together with its sistership Spirit of Vancouver Island) was converted from MDO (Marine Diesel Oil) to run on LNG (liquefied natural gas). The project (done at Remontowa Shipyard in Gdansk Poland) resulted in reduced CO2 emissions by 12,500 tons (per year for both ferries). The amount is equivalent to taking off the road around 2500 vehicles per year. The engine conversion also resulted in fuel costs (reduced by 16% per year). LNG tanks are installed on a fully enclosed vehicle deck. The fuel is provided by FortisBC (Canadian electric power and gas distribution company).
Other mid-life upgrades (MLU) included new navigation equipment, renewed propulsion system components (gearboxes, rudders, steering, bow thrusters, propeller blades), new LED lighting, installing more efficient air-conditioning equipment, installing 4 new marine evacuation systems (lifesaving devices). Passenger areas were updated with new carpeting, furniture upholstery, tabletops, refurbished public restrooms, adding new washroom on Deck 5, adding Arbutus Coffee Bar (new) on Deck 6, doubling the onboard retail shopping space.
