Spirit of British Columbia ferry Review

Review of Spirit of British Columbia ferry

MS Spirit of British Columbia ferry is a Ro-Ro passenger vessel owned and operated by the Canadian company BC FERRIES. The ship has a maximum capacity of 2,100 passengers and 470 cars. The vessel was launched in 1993 and currently operates on the Vancouver Island ferry route Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay / Victoria BC (crossing time 1.5 hours).

Cabins

The ferry Spirit of British Columbia has no cabins (passenger staterooms) due to the route’s short crossing distance. Instead, the ship offers plenty of seating, including a Reserved Seating Lounge with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, satellite TV programming, its own bar, and comfortable leather recliners.

Reserved seats are available for pre-booking. These deals (SeaWest Lounge entry fees) include Starbucks coffee, a variety of teas, juices (orange and apple), freshly baked pastries, and selections of newspapers and popular magazines. At an additional fixed price, passengers can purchase the Morning Menu (food and drinks package), which includes baked goods, fresh fruits, a cheese platter, crackers, hot oatmeal cereal, and yogurts.

During drydock refurbishment in 2018, the ferry (together with her sistership Spirit of Vancouver Island) was converted from MDO (Marine Diesel Oil) to run on LNG (liquefied natural gas). The project (carried out at Remontowa Shipyard in Gdansk Poland) resulted in a reduction of CO2 emissions by 12,500 tons per year for both ferries. This is equivalent to removing around 2,500 vehicles from the road annually. The engine conversion also reduced fuel costs by approximately 16% per year. LNG tanks were installed on a fully enclosed vehicle deck. The fuel is supplied by FortisBC (a Canadian electric power and gas distribution company).

Other mid-life upgrades (MLU) included new navigation equipment, renewed propulsion system components (gearboxes, rudders, steering systems, bow thrusters, propeller blades), new LED lighting, installation of more efficient air-conditioning equipment, and the addition of four new marine evacuation systems (lifesaving devices). Passenger areas were also updated with new carpeting, refurbished furniture upholstery and tabletops, renovated public restrooms, a new washroom added on Deck 5, the addition of the Arbutus Coffee Bar (new) on Deck 6, and an expansion that doubled the onboard retail shopping space.
