MS Spirit of Vancouver Island ferry is a Ro-Ro passenger vessel owned and operated by the Canadian company BC FERRIES. The ship has a maximum capacity of 2,100 passengers and 470 cars. The vessel was launched in 1994 and currently operates on the Vancouver Island route Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay / Victoria BC (crossing time approximately 1.5 hours).

Cabins

The ferry has no passenger cabins due to the short crossing duration. Instead, the ship offers ample seating, including a Reserved Seating Lounge with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, satellite TV programming, a dedicated bar, and comfortable leather recliners.

Reserved seats are available for pre-booking. These packages (SeaWest Lounge entry) include Starbucks coffee, a selection of teas, juices (orange, apple), fresh pastries, and a range of newspapers and magazines. At an additional fixed price, passengers can purchase a Morning Menu package that includes baked goods, fresh fruit, cheese platter, crackers, hot oatmeal, and yogurt.

During the drydock refurbishment from October 15, 2018, through February 28, 2019, the ship (together with her fleetmate British Columbia) was converted from MDO (Marine Diesel Oil) to LNG (liquefied natural gas) propulsion. The project, completed at Remontowa Shipyard in Gdansk Poland, resulted in a reduction of CO2 emissions by approximately 12,500 tons per year (for both ferries combined), equivalent to removing around 2,500 vehicles from the road annually. The engine conversion also reduced fuel costs by approximately 16% per year. LNG tanks were installed on a fully enclosed vehicle deck, with fuel supplied by FortisBC (a Canadian energy utility company).

Additional mid-life upgrades (MLU) included new navigation equipment, refurbishment of propulsion system components (gearboxes, rudders, steering systems, bow thrusters, and propeller blades), installation of LED lighting, upgraded air-conditioning systems, and the addition of four new marine evacuation systems (lifesaving equipment). Passenger areas were also refreshed with new carpeting, reupholstered furniture, updated tabletops, refurbished public restrooms, an additional washroom on Deck 5, a new Arbutus Coffee Bar on Deck 6, and expanded onboard retail space (doubled in size).
