Cruise Barcelona ferry Wiki
The vessel was launched on February 16, 2008, and delivered to the GRIMALDI GROUP in September. It is the second ship in a 4-vessel series, along with sisterships Cruise Roma, Cruise Europa, and Cruise Olympia. These are the largest ferries flagged in Italy. Each ship is powered by four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 12V46D) with a combined output of 55.4 MW.
In March 2018, Grimaldi Group and the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri signed a letter of intent for a drydock lengthening and refurbishment project for the ships Barcelona and Roma. Both ferries received prefabricated midship sections (29 m / 95 ft long, weighing 2540 tons). The project was completed in 2019 at the Palermo Shipyard. During the drydocks, scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning systems) and battery power technology were installed on each ship.
Battery power is used during maneuvering in ports when the ships' diesel-electric generators are switched off. The fabrication, delivery, and installation of the batteries were handled by Canadian company Corvus Energy (Richmond BC), one of the world's leading manufacturers and suppliers of energy storage solutions (ESS) for the maritime industry. Corvus Energy provides ESS to hybrid and all-electric ferries. As of 2019, the company had delivered its innovative "Orca ESS" product line to over 200 vessel conversion and upgrade projects, totaling more than 200 MWh.
On July 3, 2019, Corvus Energy completed the installation of a total of 11 MWh energy storage systems (5.5 MWh per ferry for Cruise Barcelona and Cruise Roma). These batteries allow the ferries to shut down their diesel engines and operate on battery power for up to 4 hours while in port.
Following the conversions, each vessel's LOA (length overall) increased from 225 m to 254 m, and GT (gross tonnage) rose from 54,919 to 63,000. Passenger capacity increased from 2,794 to 3,500, while cargo capacity expanded from 3,000 to 3,600 lanemeters (the car deck now covering 3,000 m2). Lounge seating capacity grew from 150 to 600 seats. The drydock refit also added 600 lanemeters, 80 new staterooms (totaling 559, up from 479), two new seating lounges (combined capacity of 450 seats), a new self-service family restaurant (270 seats), and a new themed restaurant. All existing public areas were renovated, and the ship's safety equipment (life rafts, boats, life jackets) was upgraded to comply with the increased capacity.
