Cruise Roma ferry Wiki
The vessel was launched on June 22, 2007, and delivered to the GRIMALDI GROUP in January 2008. It is the first in a 4-ship series, alongside sisterships Cruise Barcelona, Cruise Europa, and Cruise Olympia. These are the largest ferries registered under the Italian flag. Each ship is powered by four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 12V46D) with a combined power output of 55.4 MW.
In March 2018, Grimaldi Group and the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri signed a letter of intent for a drydock lengthening and refurbishment project for the ships Roma and Barcelona. Both ferries received prefabricated midship sections (29 m / 95 ft long, weighing 2,540 tons). The project was completed in 2019 at the Palermo Shipyard. During drydock, scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning systems) and battery power technology were also installed on each ship.
Battery power is used during port maneuvering when the ship's diesel-electric generators are switched off. The Canadian company Corvus Energy (Richmond, BC)—one of the world's leading manufacturers and suppliers of energy storage solutions (ESS) for the maritime industry—was contracted for the fabrication, delivery, and installation of the batteries. The company supplies ESS to hybrid and fully electric ferries. As of 2019, Corvus Energy had delivered its "Orca ESS" product line to more than 200 vessel conversion and upgrade projects, totaling over 200 MWh.
On July 3, 2019, Corvus Energy completed the installation of a total of 11 MWh energy storage systems (5.5 MWh per ferry for Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona). These batteries allow the vessels to shut down their diesel engines and operate on battery power for up to 4 hours during in-port stays.
Following the conversions, each vessel has an LOA (length overall) of 254 m (increased from 225 m), gross tonnage of 63,000 tons (up from 54,919 tons), and a passenger capacity of 3,500 (from 2,794). Cargo capacity increased to 3,600 lanemeters (3,000 m² car deck, up from 3,000 lanemeters / 176 cargo vehicles), and lounge seating capacity grew to 600 (from 150 seats). The drydock refit added 600 lanemeters, 80 new staterooms (totaling 559, up from 479), two new seating lounges (combined capacity of 450 seats), a new self-service family restaurant (270 seats), and a new themed restaurant. Refurbishment work included renovations to all existing public areas. The vessel's safety equipment (life rafts, boats, life jackets) was also upgraded to meet the increased capacity.
