History - construction and ownership

MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples. Founded in 1960, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) — the world’s second-largest containership operator and the largest privately owned cruise company.

By annual passenger volume, MSC ranks as the world’s third-largest cruise shipowner, following Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Group.

MSC Explora 6 Wiki

The vessel (Fincantieri Monfalcone yard/hull number 6324) has a volume of 63,900 GT, a deadweight capacity of 7,500 tons, and a maximum draught of 7 m. The powerplant consists of four Wartsila 8L46F marine diesel engines with a combined output of 38.4 MW (51,500 hp). Propulsion is provided by a PEM fuel-cell–battery hybrid system (two motors) delivering a combined output of 20 MW (26,820 hp). The registered owner is MSC CROCIERE SPA, and the registered manager is MSC MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING CO.

In January 2018, strong rumors emerged that MSC was considering the launch of a new all-inclusive luxury cruise brand. Another possibility discussed at the time was developing a parallel “expedition” fleet within MSC Cruises. By 2020, it was confirmed that MSC would indeed introduce a new brand.

On October 18, 2018, the MSC Group and Fincantieri signed an MoA (memorandum of agreement) for four ultra-luxury ships valued at EUR 2.0 billion (~USD 2.3B / ~GBP 1.75B). The announcement noted that the first unit would be delivered in Q2 2023, with a design of approximately 64,000 GT and 500 staterooms.

  • The final MSC–Fincantieri shipbuilding contract for the four luxury expedition ships was signed on March 14, 2019.
  • Both agreements were signed by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Executive Chairman) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri CEO).
  • With this order, MSC’s Fincantieri-built fleet reached 17 units (EUR 14.96 billion total investment / ~USD 17.27B / ~GBP 13.6B), all scheduled for completion by 2027. By that time, MSC’s cruise fleet will total 29 vessels.

The EUR 2.3 billion investment for the four units was projected to generate an economic impact exceeding EUR 10 billion in Italy, including employment benefits, as each ship requires more than 7 million man-hours and an average workforce of 2,500 over a period of more than two years.

MSC Group’s subsequent shipbuilding contract with Fincantieri for units 5 and 6 was signed on September 21, 2023, by Pierfrancesco Vago and Pierroberto Folgiero (Fincantieri CEO). Unlike their predecessors, Explora 5 (2027) and Explora 6 (2028) are designed with hydrogen-power capability, equipped with fuel cells running on liquid hydrogen to supply electricity for hotel operations when docked. Their engines can also use alternative fuels such as biogas (from organic waste), syngas (hydrogen and carbon monoxide blend), and methanol (CH3OH).

The rumors were officially confirmed in March 2021 with the announcement of the new brand’s senior leadership team.

  • Michael Ungerer (CEO), Chris Austin (CSO – Chief Sales Officer)
  • Sarah Doyle (CMO – Chief Marketing Officer)
  • Thatcher Brown (Commercial and Strategic Advisor), John Stoll (Destination Experience Advisor)
  • Sacha Rougier (Itinerary Planning & Shore Experience)
  • Prior to joining MSC, Chris Austin worked at Seabourn (SVP Global Sales & Marketing), Sarah Doyle at Bacardi Europe (Vice President Marketing), Thatcher Brown at GHK Dream Cruises (President) and Crystal Cruises Asia (Managing Director), Sacha Rougier at Cruise Gate Hamburg (Managing Director), and John Stoll at Crystal Cruises and Silversea (Director, Land Programs).

MSC EXPLORA ship technology

All vessels for the Explora Journeys brand are constructed at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone Shipyard near Trieste, Italy.

Explora I’s steel-cutting ceremony (June 10, 2021) also marked the official launch of MSC’s new expedition luxury brand, “Explora Journeys.” The brand’s mandala-inspired logo was created by Alexa Aponte-Vago (MSC Group CFO, daughter of founder Gianluigi Aponte, and wife of Pierfrancesco Vago).

MSC Explora Journeys logo

Explora Journeys vessels incorporate the latest maritime environmental technologies and are engineered to adopt future alternative energy solutions through their hybrid powerplant design.

The MSC EXPLORA-class ship design includes provisions for battery storage to support hybrid power generation, as well as advanced SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems capable of reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90%. Other energy-saving and environmentally supportive technologies include an optimized hull (with anti-fouling coating), improved hydrodynamics, a smart HVAC system, a USCG-approved ballast water treatment plant, an advanced wastewater treatment system, full-ship LED lighting, and CII Trim Optimization software (adjusting trim and draft to reduce fuel consumption by up to 3%).

The vessels are equipped with shoreside power connectivity to eliminate emissions while docked, as well as advanced underwater noise-mitigation systems to protect marine life. Each EXPLORA-class ship is outfitted with an extensive suite of energy-efficient technologies aimed at optimizing engine performance and further reducing emissions.

Explora 1 and 2 operate with marine diesel engines using LSFO (low-sulfur fuel oil), Explora 3 and 4 are powered by LNG engines, and Explora 5 and 6 employ LNG engines combined with hydrogen fuel-cell technology. All vessels are RINA-certified (RINA DOLPHIN notation) for reduced underwater noise and vibration. Consistent with MSC sustainability policies, single-use plastics are eliminated both onboard and within the brand’s shoreside operations.

In late September 2020, Versonix Seaware announced that MSC's new brand would use the Versonix system for online cruise bookings. The platform annually supports more than 20 million passengers and over 100 ships. Established in 1986, Versonix is a Silicon Valley company (San Jose, California) specializing in hotel and resort reservation software, led by Victor Velton (President) and Yuri Polissky (CEO).

In July 2022, MSC signed a contract with SES SA (Luxembourg-based owner/operator of satellites and terrestrial telecom networks) to provide “O3b mPower” satellite connectivity to the Explora Journeys fleet. O3b mPower integrates SES’ second-generation MEO satellites (~8000 km above Earth) with GEO satellites (~35,800 km altitude).

On July 6, 2022, an MoA was signed for two additional EXPLORA ships (Explora 5 and Explora 6), both LNG- and hydrogen-powered, equipped with a containment system for liquid hydrogen. The hydrogen supplies a 6-MW fuel cell generating all electricity required for hotel operations. With Explora 5 (2027) and Explora 6 (2028), MSC’s total Explora Journeys investment reached EUR 3.5 billion.

The initial cost for each EXPLORA-class vessel was EUR 495 million (USD 600M). The second pair of sisterships (Explora 3 and Explora 4) incurred higher construction costs—EUR 615 million per unit (USD 730 million), an increase of EUR 120 million each—due to LNG propulsion and related design modifications. These changes also resulted in delayed deliveries: Explora 3 and 4 were rescheduled to 2026 (from 2025) and 2027 (from 2026), respectively.
