Riverside Debussy Review
Review of Riverside Debussy
The 2018-built MS Riverside Debussy cruise ship (fka Crystal Debussy) was ordered for Crystal River Cruises and constructed by Lloyd Werft (MV Werften) in Wismar Germany. Her fleetmates include the sisterships Riverside Bach, Riverside Mahler, Riverside Ravel, and Riverside Mozart. These riverboats were marketed by Crystal as ultra-luxury “river yachts.”
Since 2022, Crystal’s entire river fleet has been owned by Seaside Hotels and managed by Seaside’s subsidiary and travel brand “Riverside Collection Cruises” (also known as Riverside Luxury Cruises).
History - construction and ownership
Crystal Cruises Inc (founded in 1988, USA-based) was a subsidiary of Japan’s NYK Line/Nippon Yusen Kaisha (one of the world’s largest container shipping companies). In 2015, NYK Line sold the company to Genting Hong Kong (GHK), after which it was renamed Crystal Ltd. The group consolidated the ultra-luxury brands Crystal Cruises (ocean ships), Crystal River Cruises (European riverboats), Crystal Yacht Cruises (superyachts), Crystal Luxury Air (aircraft), and Crystal AirCruises (fly-cruise tours).
In January 2022, GHK filed for bankruptcy and all assets were placed up for sale. In June 2022, Crystal Ltd was acquired by A&K Travel Group Ltd (Abercrombie & Kent). In October 2022, GHK Crystal Cruises’ liquidator sold Crystal Bach (together with her sisterships) to the Hamburg Germany-based company Seaside Collection GmbH & Co KG. The vessel (renamed “Riverside Mozart”) is now operated by the UK-based subsidiary Riverside Collection Ltd (founded in October 2018).
Seaside Collection’s core subsidiary, Seaside Hotels GmbH, was founded in 1970 (as Gerlach Wohnungsbau GmbH). It is a luxury hotel group owned and operated by the Gerlach family and currently manages premium hotels and resorts in Germany, Spain, the Canary Islands, and the Maldives.

Crystal River Cruises began operations in 2016 after GHK purchased and fully refurbished the riverboat MS Mozart (renamed “Crystal Mozart” and relaunched in July 2016). GHK subsequently ordered four new riverboats from the German shipbuilder Lloyd Werft for the Crystal brand.

The vessel Riverside Debussy (ENI number 4812690) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057864) and registered in Basel. As Crystal Debussy, she was Malta-flagged (MMSI 248366000) and registered in Valletta.
Decks and Cabins
Riverside Debussy has 55 staterooms (capacity 114 passengers / maximum 169 with triple occupancy) and luxury suites ranging from 20 to 71 m2 (220 to 760 ft2).
All cabins in the Riverside Collection series feature industry-leading amenities, including king-size beds, walk-in closets, and en-suite marble bathrooms with double-sink vanities.
The riverboat has 4 decks, 2 of which accommodate passenger cabins.
Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks
Onboard dining venues include Waterside Restaurant (main dining room), Vintage Room (10-seat wine bar/private dining room), Palm Court (show lounge), Cove Bar, Bistro (casual café, patisserie, coffee bar, and library), and on the top deck, Vista Bar and Vista Grill (alfresco lunch venue, weather permitting).
All dining venues operate with open seating.
The Bistro (midship on Deck 3) is open throughout the day and serves late-risers breakfast and dinner. The venue offers homemade pastries and waffles, branded coffee beverages prepared by professional baristas, gourmet ice cream, milkshakes, and wine by the glass. In the evenings, the Bistro transforms into a tapas-style restaurant featuring destination-inspired local dishes and beverages.
Menus feature freshly prepared cuisine using locally sourced ingredients and itinerary-based regional specialties, including fresh seafood and fish, seasonal fruits and vegetables, locally sourced meats and poultry, regional draft and craft beers, and local wines and cheeses. Complimentary specialty coffees and teas are supplied by Vienna, Austria-based Julius Meinl.

Vista Deck (Deck 4) is the ship’s Sundeck, equipped with a large outdoor screen, sunbathing areas with padded loungers, and shaded seating areas.
Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport
The vessel features 3 lounges and bars, 4 restaurants, 1 panoramic glass elevator, a fitness center, and spa facilities. Distinctive features include the glass-domed atrium and the indoor infinity (resistance) pool. The Palm Court show lounge includes a stage for live performances, grand piano recitals, and sing-alongs. It also features a dance floor for themed parties, floor-to-ceiling windows, live greenery, comfortable seating, and a full-service bar. The 24-hour coffee and tea station, The Pantry, offers complimentary fruit, pastries, cookies, and sparkling water. The river yachts also provide a Fitness Center and full-service Spa. One deck is dedicated entirely to public spaces, including the spa, gym, library, and Palm Court lounge. Each vessel carries a fleet of electric bikes, two-person kayaks, and jet skis for complimentary use during independent or guided shore excursions.

Riverside Debussy Wiki
Crystal Debussy is named after the French composer Claude Debussy (1862–1918). The dual steel-cutting ceremony for Crystal Ravel (yard number 129) and Debussy (yard number 128) took place on January 9, 2017, at MV Werften shipyard (Wismar Germany). The first steel plates were flame-cut. The event was attended by Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (Genting Hong Kong’s Executive Chairman), Edie Rodriguez (Crystal Cruises’ President, CEO, and Chairman), and Harry Glawe (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Minister of Economics).

The dual keel-laying ceremony for Debussy and Ravel was held on May 24, 2017, at MV Werften Wismar. The vessels’ first sections were ceremoniously lowered onto the keel blocks. The event was attended by Jarmo Laakso (MV WERFTEN’s CEO), Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (GHK’s Chairman and CEO), Josef Lumetsberger (Crystal River Cruises’ General Manager of Operations), Harry Glawe (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Minister of Economics), and other distinguished guests. Minister Glawe and Tan Sri Lim placed traditional “lucky coins” on the keel blocks before the ships’ first two sections (each weighing 170 tons) were laid down.
Crystal Debussy was launched on June 4, 2017, and christened in Wismar on March 8, 2018. The ceremony was attended by Tom Wolber (Crystal Cruises’ President and CEO), Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (GHK’s Chairman and CEO), Colin Au (GHK Group President), and Jarmo Laakso (MV WERFTEN’s CEO).
Crystal Debussy’s official naming ceremony took place on May 28, 2018, in Amsterdam. Her godmother was Rachel York (US actress and singer). The event was attended by Tom Wolber and Walter Littlejohn (Crystal River Cruises’ VP and Managing Director) and was live-streamed via the company’s Facebook page.
The Inaugural Cruise (Maiden Voyage), themed “Tulips and Windmills,” was scheduled for April 9, 2018.
