Viking Sineus Review
Review of Viking Sineus
The Viking Sineus cruises on the Dnieper River in Ukraine and the Black Sea, departing from Kiev and Odessa. This Viking cruise ship is named after Sineus—a Varangian prince/chieftain of the Rus tribe. Brother to Truvor and Rurik, Sineus settled on the southern shores of White Lake (“Lake Beloye”), founding the town of Belozersk (also known as Beloozero). The territories of Truvor and Sineus were later consolidated by Rurik, who established his dynasty in Kiev to rule the Kievan Rus.
Viking Sineus accommodations meet European comfort standards and feature hotel-style beds, 26-inch flat-screen TVs, and in-room refrigerators. The ship’s elegant public spaces and dining venues contribute to making her one of the premier river cruise ships in Ukraine.

Guests can enjoy a fully refurbished vessel accommodating up to 202 passengers in 98 staterooms—2 Junior Suites, 4 Suites, 32 Deluxe, and 60 Veranda cabins. The Sun Deck offers shaded seating and 360-degree views, while onboard facilities include a restaurant, observation lounge, two bars with panoramic views, library, boutique shop, and complimentary Wi-Fi in all staterooms. Viking Sineus Wiki
Built as "Mikhail Lomonosov," MS Viking Sineus is one of Russia's signature "Project 301" river cruise ships.
Vladimir Ilyich-class Russian river ships
The "Vladimir Ilyich class" (also known as "Project 301") comprises three series of Russian river cruise ships built in the GDR (Germany) for the USSR (Soviet Union) between 1974 and 1983. The vessel class is named in honor of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (1870–1924), regarded as the founder of the USSR.
These Russian river cruise ships (22 units in total) were all constructed by VEB Elbewerft Boizenburg and represent one of the industry's most successful riverboat designs. They were used for passenger (cruise) operations across Northwestern USSR, including the Volga River, Belomor Canal, Lake Onega, Volga–Don Canal, Kama and Amur rivers, as well as the Dnieper River (Ukraine) and the Black Sea. Following the collapse of the USSR in 1991, all vessels were acquired by private companies (both Russian and international).

"Project 301" ship technology
All "Project 301" vessels share the following characteristics:
- LOA length 125 m (410 ft)
- Beam 17 m (55 ft)
- Deadweight tonnage (DWT) 3063 tons
- V-shaped hulls—varying by series in external features such as window shapes (rectangular or rounded) and wheelhouse headlights
- 5 decks
- Capacity of 240 passengers and 110 crew, 102 outside cabins, 2 restaurants, 2 bar lounges, sauna room, souvenir shop, lobby (Reception Desk with safe), and a 360-degree Promenade Deck with outdoor seating
- Powerplant consisting of three marine diesel engines "Viertakt-Dieselmotor" (4-stroke, model 6ЧРН 36/45, also known as ЭГ70-5), each fitted with a turbocharger
- The third (final) series features enhanced propulsion, including bow thrusters
- Staterooms include single and double cabins (originally 1-, 2-, and 3-berth), all with en-suite bathrooms
- Post-reconstruction upgrades introduced larger cabins, including suites
Depending on the series, vessels differ in size and equipment, including variations in diesel engine designs. Many of these Russian ships were extensively refurbished and rebuilt for international river cruise operators (such as Viking, AMA Waterways, and Grand Circle). During multi-million-dollar drydock refits, passenger capacity was significantly reduced to enhance onboard comfort and safety.
