MS Nizhny Novgorod Review

Review of MS Nizhny Novgorod

MS Nizhny Novgorod cruise ship ("теплоход Нижний Новгород" круизный корабль) is a traditional Russian river passenger vessel built for the USSR (Soviet Union) in the GDR (East Germany). The boat is currently owned and operated by the Russian river cruise company VODOHOD ("Водоход"). MS Novgorod cruises on the Volga River, departing from Nizhny Novgorod. Most itineraries are roundtrip voyages visiting Astrakhan (13-day), Perm (9-day), Samara (6-day), St Petersburg (14-day), Kazan (5-6-day), Karelia (14-day), Cheboksary (3-day), Makarievo (2-day) and Yelabuga (5-day).

The shipowner VODOHOD is Russia's largest river cruise operator. The company was established in 2004 as Volga Shipping Company. After merging with Volga Flot Tour, VODOHOD now operates over 50 cruise ships sailing along the rivers Don, Volga, Kama and Moscow, as well as the Volga-Don Canal, Volga-Baltic Waterway and the lakes Ladoga and Onega.

VODOHOD's predecessor, Volga Shipping Company (Volzhskoye parokhodstvo / Волжское пароходство), was founded in 1843 as a Volga steamship transportation company. In 2011, the company operated over 300 passenger and cargo river vessels and transported more than 6.7 billion tons of cargo and over 368,000 passengers on Russia's largest inland waterways.

MS Nizhny Novgorod cruise ship (Russia, Volga River)

The ship is named after the Russian city Nizhny Novgorod, fully renovated in 2011 and last refurbished in 2019.

In 2021 (May–September), the riverboat was chartered by Emerald Waterways and rebranded as "MS Rossia". To the 11-day Volga cruise tour itinerary (themed "Imperial Charms of Russia", between St Petersburg and Moscow) an overnight stay in Saint Petersburg can be added, including a guided tour of Peterhof Palace.

Emerald Waterways’ Russia cruise bookings opened on July 27, 2020. Early bookings (for any 2021 departure) received free roundtrip flights to Russia plus a USD 1100 discount on the cruise fare. Guests paying in full within 14 days of booking received an additional USD 250 per person discount.

MS Nizhny Novgorod ship related cruise news

MS Nizhny Novgorod Wiki

Built as Sovetskaya Rossiya, MS Nizhny Novgorod is one of Russia's signature “Project 301” river cruise ships.

Vladimir Ilyich-class Russian river ships

The “Vladimir Ilyich class” (also known as “Project 301”) consists of three series of Russian river cruise ships built in the GDR (East Germany) for the USSR between 1974 and 1983. The class is named in honor of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (1870–1924), considered the founder of the Soviet Union.

A total of 22 units were built by VEB Elbewerft Boizenburg, forming one of the most successful riverboat designs in Soviet passenger shipping. These vessels operated in Northwestern USSR on rivers and waterways such as the Volga, Belomorkanal, Lake Onega, Volga–Don Canal, Kama and Amur rivers, as well as on the Dnieper River (Ukraine) and in the Black Sea. After the USSR’s dissolution in 1991, all ships were transferred to private operators (Russian and foreign).

“Project 301” ship technology

All “Project 301” ships share the following characteristics:

  • LOA length: 125 m (410 ft)
  • Width: 17 m (55 ft)
  • DWT: 3063 tons
  • V-shaped hulls, varying by series in external elements, window shape (rectangular or rounded) and wheelhouse headlights
  • 5 decks
  • Accommodation for 240 passengers and 110 crew, 102 outside cabins, 2 restaurants, 2 bar lounges, Sauna Room, Souvenir Shop, Lobby (Reception Desk with safe), 360-degree Promenade Deck with outdoor seating
  • Powerplant with three “Viertakt-Dieselmotor” 4-stroke diesel engines (model 6ЧРН 36/45 / ЭГ70-5), each with a turbocharger
  • Third-series vessels equipped with stronger propulsion (including bow thrusters)
  • Original cabins in single, double and triple configurations, all with en-suite bathrooms
  • Post-refit conversions introduced larger cabins, including suites

Depending on the series, the boats differ in size and technical equipment (including variations in diesel engine design). Many of the ships were extensively modernized for foreign river cruise companies such as Viking, AmaWaterways and Grand Circle. These multi-million-dollar refits significantly reduced passenger capacity to improve comfort and safety.
