MS Konstantin Simonov Review

Review of MS Konstantin Simonov

MS Konstantin Simonov cruise ship ("теплоход Константин Симонов" круизный корабль) is a traditional Russian river vessel of the Project 302 (Dmitriy Furmanov-class). This USSR-built ship is currently owned and operated by the Russian company VODOHOD ("Водоход"). MS Simonov cruises on the Volga River between St Petersburg and Moscow on 7-day southbound and northbound itineraries.

Vodohod is Russia's largest river cruise company. Founded in 2004 as the Volga Shipping Company, it later merged with Volga Flot Tour. Today, Vodohod operates over 50 cruise ships on the Don, Volga, Kama, and Moscow rivers, as well as the Volga–Don Canal, Volga–Baltic Waterway, and lakes Ladoga and Onega.

VODOHOD’s predecessor, Volga Shipping Company (Волжское пароходство), was established in 1843 as a Volga steamship operator. By 2011, the company managed over 300 passenger and cargo vessels and transported more than 6.7 billion tons of cargo and over 368,000 passengers across Russia’s major inland waterways.

MS Simonov was named after the Soviet poet, author, and war correspondent Konstantin Mikhailovich Simonov (1915–1979). The vessel was extensively refurbished in 2011.

MS Konstantin Simonov Wiki

MS Simonov is one of Russia's signature "Project 302" river cruise ships.

Dmitriy Furmanov-class Russian river ships

The "Dmitriy Furmanov class" (also known as "Project 302") consists of four series of Russian river cruise ships built in the GDR (East Germany) for the USSR between 1983 and 1992. The vessel class is named in honor of the Russian writer Dmitriy Andreyevich Furmanov (1891–1926), who also served as a Bolshevik commissar in the Red Army.

A total of 27 ships were produced by VEB Elbewerft Boizenburg. These vessels were an upgraded and larger version of the earlier Project 301 (Vladimir Ilyich-class) riverboats. They were used for passenger cruising across northwestern regions of the USSR — including the Volga River, Belomorkanal, Lake Onega, Volga–Don Canal, Kama and Amur rivers — as well as the Dnieper River (Ukraine), the Black Sea (coastal voyages), and the Yangtze River (China). Following the USSR’s collapse in 1991, all vessels were acquired by private Russian and foreign companies.
