Viking Torgil

The 2014-built Longship Viking Torgil cruises on the Douro River in Portugal and Spain, with itineraries departing from Lisbon (including a 2-night hotel stay) and Oporto (7-day roundtrip cruise with embarkation/disembarkation). The sailing portion begins in Porto (Oporto).

This riverboat is named after Torgil, a Danish explorer. According to historical accounts, Torgil (Thorgisl) and his brother Frode, sons of the Danish king Harald, sailed westward to raid the lands of Bretland (Wales and western England), Scotland, Ireland, and as far south as Portugal. They are also recognized as Viking conquerors of Dublin, Ireland (841 AD), where they became its first rulers.

Longship Torgil is operated through a partnership between Viking River Cruises and Douro Azul (Portugal’s largest cruise tour company, a subsidiary of Mystic Cruises). Other Viking vessels based in Portugal include the sister ships Hemming, Osfrid, Helgrim, Gyda, and Sol.

Cabins

Viking Torgil has a total of 53 staterooms (11 Suites, 24 Balcony cabins, 2 French Balcony cabins, and 16 with non-opening windows) across 8 categories.

All staterooms are designed for comfort and elegance, featuring amenities such as 40-inch HDTVs, hotel-style beds with premium mattresses, and luxury bath products. Veranda Suites include two separate rooms, with a step-out balcony off the living room and a French balcony off the bedroom.

Shipboard facilities

Viking Torgil is a modified-design longship (smaller in size, with reduced passenger capacity), built specifically for cruising on the Douro River. She features an innovative corridor configuration, modern engineering and technologies, signature Scandinavian decor, premium stateroom amenities, themed onboard entertainment, and an expert-led enrichment program.

Onboard dining venues include the main Restaurant (dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (al fresco dining), located at the bow. The spacious Sun Deck offers 360-degree views, al fresco dining, a swimming pool with a sunbathing area, and shaded seating. Additional facilities include an Observation Lounge, Atrium (lobby), Library (with Internet access), Shop (gifts and souvenirs), Putting Green/Mini-Golf, Sky Bar, deck games (shuffleboard), and an organic herb garden.

The vessel is equipped with solar panels that contribute power to her hybrid engines.

The longship does not have a gym, whirlpool, or spa, but features a swimming pool on the Sun Deck.

Viking Torgil cruise fares include Wi-Fi Internet, all tours and excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee and tea, and daily replenished bottled water.

Itineraries

Below is a list of Viking Torgil Douro River itineraries by theme, as officially announced by Viking Cruises:

"PORTUGAL RIVER OF GOLD" – a 10-day cruise tour from Lisbon, including a 7-day Douro River cruise from Oporto (roundtrip, starting eastbound). These itineraries include 8 complimentary guided tours in Portugal and Spain.

The Douro River itinerary features scenic landscapes with terraced vineyards, picturesque villages and towns, as well as medieval castles and monasteries. Highlights include sampling traditional Portuguese cuisine and Port wines in the Douro Valley region.

Port calls and excursions include Lisbon (2-night stay at a luxury hotel such as Tivoli Lisboa or similar), scenic coach transfer to Oporto (with lunch in Coimbra and embarkation at Vila Nova de Gaia), Foz (fishing village and Port wine cellars, with optional excursion to Guimaraes and re-embarkation in Bitetos), Alpendurada Monastery (with traditional dining and fado performances), Regua (including Lamego tour to the Shrine of Our Lady of Remedies and visits to Quinta do Seixo winery, with re-embarkation in Pinhao), passage through the Valeira and Pocinho locks, Barca d’Alva (with excursion to Castelo Rodrigo), full-day excursion to Salamanca Spain (from Vega de Terron) (including lunch and flamenco performance), Pinhao (visit to Favaios and Quinta da Avessada winery with dinner and wine tasting), Regua (tour to Vila Real), Gaia (overnight stay), and Oporto (disembarkation).
