Blue Dream Melody Review
Review of Blue Dream Melody
The 2002-built (as AIDAvita) cruise ship Blue Dream Melody was the second-oldest and smallest vessel in AIDA's fleet, following her sistership AIDAaura/now Celestyal Discovery. For the Chinese travel brand Blue Dream Cruises, her fleetmate is the Blue Dream Star (2001-built).
Before the ownership transfer in January 2024, AIDAvita (IMO number 9221554) was flagged in Portugal (Madeira) with MMSI 255919000 and registered in Funchal. During her AIDA service (until February 2023), she was Italy-flagged (MMSI 247114900), with port of registry Genoa.
The ship is currently Liberia-flagged (MMSI 636022869) and registered in Monrovia.
History - construction and ownership
On June 14, 2022, it was announced that the 20-year-old AIDAvita would not return to service, as the ship was sold and left the fleet. There were speculations that she had been acquired by Cordelia Cruises (India).
Her last scheduled AIDA program included 30 voyages (between July 24, 2022, and February 26, 2024), all of which were canceled.
During the COVID pandemic and until July 2023, AIDAvita remained laid up at Port Tallinn, Estonia, manned by a skeleton crew.
As of January 2024, Blue Dream Melody is owned by Suzhou Taihu International Travel Ltd (China) through its subsidiary, Fujian China Transport Investment Group Co Ltd (founded in 2016), which operates the Blue Dream Cruises brand in China.
Fujian China Transport Investment Group also owns the Chinese travel brands “Diamond Cruise Line” and “National Cruise.”
On January 12, 2023, the vessel (temporarily named AVITAK) was acquired from previous owner Beta Marine Ltd (1987-founded, based in Hardwicke, England). She departed Tallinn on January 26th at 16:23 UTC, en route to China.
The 1300-passenger ship AIDAvita was designed as a "club ship" in AIDA's ultra-casual style. Her five bars reflected this relaxed atmosphere. AIDA’s unique style and onboard services gained popularity among younger European travelers and earned the brand widespread recognition.
Before starting revenue service under her new Chinese ownership, the ship underwent a major drydock refit, including technical overhauls, maintenance, classification inspections, hull cleaning and repainting, and installation of a shore-power connection. All public spaces and staterooms were redesigned and renovated with new carpeting and flooring to appeal to the Chinese cruise market.
Decks and Cabins
AIDAvita staterooms (total 633, in 9 categories) include 2 Suites, 62 Balcony cabins, 357 Oceanviews, and 214 Inside cabins. The largest accommodations are the Forward-Facing Premium Suites (355 ft² / 33 m² plus private sundeck terrace of 270 ft² / 25 m²).
The vessel has 12 decks, of which 10 are accessible to passengers and 5 contain cabins.
Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks
The ship features two main restaurants—Calypso and Markt Restaurant—both offering buffet-style meals with open seating. There are no assigned dining times or dress codes. Basic beverages, including house wines and beer, are complimentary during meals at the buffet venues. Beverage packages are available for purchase at discounted rates. The à la carte Rossini Restaurant provides fine dining with waiter service and a six-course menu for an additional charge and requires reservations.

Blue Dream Melody itineraries
In May 2024, Blue Dream Cruises introduced longer voyages for Blue Dream Melody departing from China.
The 33-night/34-day “Epic Voyage to the West” (departure November 26, 2024, roundtrip from Shanghai) visits 17 ports across 10 countries, including China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, and Brunei. Shorter cruises (all roundtrip from Shanghai) visit destinations in Korea (Busan) and Japan (Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Osaka/Kobe, Tokyo, Shimizu, Kochi, Fukuoka, Okinawa, Amami, Kagoshima), with itinerary lengths of 7 nights/8 days and 11 nights/12 days.
AIDAvita itineraries
AIDAvita’s itinerary program focused on Northern Europe and the Canary Islands, with homeports in Germany (Hamburg and Warnemünde-Rostock). The ship visited destinations in Norway (Fjords), the UK, France (Honfleur), the Netherlands (Rotterdam), Portugal’s Madeira, Spain’s Canary Islands (Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma, El Hierro, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote), and Iberian ports.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ship was paused from March 2020 through February 2023. A restart was scheduled for March 31, 2022, but was repeatedly postponed and eventually canceled. The Russia-Ukraine crisis also impacted cancellations.
Several canceled AIDAvita sailings were reassigned to AIDAbella.

Blue Dream Melody Wiki
AIDAvita was AIDA's second-oldest ship, following AIDAaura/now Celestyal Discovery. The christening ceremony took place in Warnemünde, Germany, on May 4, 2002. The ship’s godmother was Doris Schröder-Köpf, wife of Gerhard Schröder (born in 1944), who served as Germany's Chancellor from 1998 to 2005. Both ships were designed as "ultra-casual club ships."
Like all AIDA ships, Vita carried a fleet of complimentary bicycles for passengers to use in call ports during voyages. A significant portion of the ship’s interior was dedicated to sports facilities. The onboard language was German, catering to AIDA’s core customer base—German-speaking Europeans (primarily Germans, Austrians, and Swiss)—most of whom were young and active travelers.
The vessel (Nordic Yards Wismar hull number A325283 / Aker MTW yard hull number 005) has a volume of 42,289 GT, a DWT of 4,232, a max beam of 35.5 m (including bridge wings), and a max draught of 6.3 m. The propulsion system is diesel-electric, powered by Wartsila diesel generators connected to two ABB electric motors (model AMZ 1600YX-14) with a combined output of 18.8 MW (25,210 hp). While operated by AIDA Cruises, the shipowner was COSTA CROCIERE SPA.
In June 2023, Blue Dream Cruises signed a partnership with Starboard Cruise Services (founded in 1958 and based in Doral, Florida—a subsidiary of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, specializing in luxury goods). This made Blue Dream Melody the second Chinese-owned cruise ship (after fleetmate Blue Dream Star) to offer Starboard’s onboard retail shopping. The ship’s duty-free shops now feature premium brands including Armani, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Prada, Ray-Ban, Love Moschino, Swiss watch brands (Longines, Tissot, Titoni), and global and Asian brands like Sisley (perfumes, fashion), Shiseido (cosmetics), and Sulwhasoo (skincare).
Blue Dream Melody refurbishment 2024 review
Blue Dream Melody’s first drydock refurbishment was completed in May 2024 at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s shipyard in Zhoushan, ahead of the ship’s debut under her new Chinese ownership.
The project involved approximately 400 shipyard employees and included extensive technical overhauls, maintenance, classification works, safety inspections, and full cleaning and repainting of the superstructure and hull. A shore-power connection was added.
A major interior renovation was also completed, including the redesign of all public spaces and staterooms, and installation of new carpeting and flooring throughout.
The Theater Lounge received upgrades to its technical systems and furniture. The galley and kitchen equipment were entirely replaced. Large LED screens were installed on the Pool Deck (Deck 10).
A new livery and hull artwork was created at the bow using 14 different colors.
AIDAvita refurbishments review
Outlined below are the changes made during AIDAvita’s drydock refurbishments.
Refurbishment 2020
The ship’s final drydock under AIDA was conducted from March 25 to April 15, 2020, in Dubai, UAE. Originally, the refurbishment was planned for Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore. The USD 30 million project included machinery maintenance and complete renovations of all staterooms and public areas (new carpeting, upholstery, curtains).
Refurbishment 2017
The 2017 drydock, held from March 25 to April 4 at Lloyd Werft (Bremerhaven, Germany), resulted in several deckplan upgrades:
- (Deck 10) Waikiki Lounge (teen club) was converted into Beach Lounge with itinerary-themed food and drinks. The adjacent Seaside Lounge terrace was upgraded with windbreaks and heaters.
- The outdoor areas of the Anytime Bar (Deck 10) and Ocean Bar (Deck 7) received new furnishings.
- The pool deck on Deck 10 was fully modernized and expanded.
- The Pool Grill bar's seating area was redesigned to offer American fast food such as burgers with wedges, bagels, and wraps.
- (Deck 8) The photo shop was expanded, and onboard photo services were upgraded.
- (Deck 8) The Rossini Restaurant was transformed into the Selection Restaurant offering regional specialties based on the cruise itinerary.
- Approximately 2,500 m² (27,000 ft²) of public space received new carpeting.
Additionally, 9,000 liters of paint were used on the ship’s exterior, along with routine safety and general maintenance work.
Refurbishment 2014
In November 2014, during a drydock in Naples, Italy, the ship received new Seaside Lounges at the Anytime Bar (Deck 10 outdoor area). Machinery upgrades were completed, and new exhaust gas scrubbers were installed.
Public areas and the Body & Soul sports complex were redesigned and expanded. Accessibility training options were introduced, making the sports area wheelchair-friendly. Digital photo kiosks were also added to the Photo Shop.
Refurbishment 2011
The 2011 drydock added the Waikiki Lounge (new teen lounge, forward-portside on Deck 10) and an Art Gallery (Deck 8). The gym's fitness equipment was upgraded, and the Anytime Disco (Deck 10) was fully redesigned.
