GNV Allegra ferry Wiki
The ship was originally launched as "Kronprins Harald" for Jahre Line, which operated in Norway between 1961 and 1990 before merging with Norway Line and Fred Olsen Lines to form COLOR LINE. As Kronprins Harald, the ferry served the Norway-Germany route Oslo-Kiel until 2007, when she was acquired by ICG (Irish Continental Group) and joined the IRISH FERRIES fleet. Following a drydock refit and refurbishment in September 2007 at Royal Denship (Fredericia Skibsvaerft Shipyard, Odense, Denmark), the vessel was renamed "Oscar Wilde" and entered service on November 30, 2007. Unlike other IRISH FERRIES ships, Oscar Wilde featured a white funnel and blue hull, instead of the company’s traditional green funnel and white hull.
The ship is powered by two Wartsila-Sulzer marine diesel engines (12-cylinder, model 12 ZAV 40) with a total power output of 19.8 MW. For IRISH FERRIES, Oscar Wilde operated on the Ireland-France routes Rosslare-Cherbourg (crossing time 18.5 hours) and Rosslare-Roscoff (crossing time 17.5 hours).
In April 2019, ICG (shipowner since 2007) announced it had entered into a bareboat hire purchase agreement to sell the vessel to MSC Shipping – the world’s second-largest containership operator. The vessel’s net book value was reported at EUR 7.7 million (USD 8.7 million). On April 11, 2019, ICG sold the cruiseferry to MSC for EUR 28.9 million (USD 32 million), payable in six equal annual installments through 2025. Following the acquisition, the ferry was renamed "GNV Allegra" and transferred to MSC’s subsidiary GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci). The ship’s flag state/registry was also changed – from the Bahamas (MMSI 308847000) to Italy (MMSI 247392600).
GNV introduced the Italy-Sardinia service (Genoa-Olbia) with the Allegra on May 25, 2019 (inaugural cruise). Prior to her deployment, the ferry was drydocked in Genoa (April-May 2019) for modifications to suit the Italian market.
