Martin i Soler ferry Wiki

In late October 2018, Balearia contracted Caterpillar Marine to install MaK dual-fuel engines on three vessels — Abel Matutes, Bahama Mama, and Martin i Soler. The conversions, performed by Caterpillar dealer Finanzauto, were scheduled for early 2019. As part of this project, the ships’ original diesel engines (2 × 9M43C, total output 18 MW) were replaced with 2 × MaK 9M46DF dual-fuel engines (diesel–LNG), each producing 8.7 MW. These engines operate with gearboxes and controllable pitch propellers. Caterpillar supplied the dual-fuel conversion kits and all associated modules, including ignition, ventilation, exhaust gas systems, GVU ventilation, valves, and housings.

In November 2018, Balearia launched a EUR 443 million (USD 520 million) drydock reconstruction program to retrofit nine ferries for LNG (liquefied natural gas) operation. The project was partially funded (20%) by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

The retrofits were carried out at Gibdock (Gibraltar) and West Sea Shipyard (Viana, Portugal) and included modifications to the diesel engines (converted to MAN dual-fuel) and the installation of LNG storage tanks. Each vessel was fitted with dual-fuel (LNG–diesel) MAN marine engines (model 9L51/60DF). The Wärtsilä-made LNG tanks (one or two per vessel) can store up to 425 m³ of LNG, enabling autonomous operation for up to 1,800 km (1,100 mi). The onboard gas piping systems were supplied by Cryospain (Madrid), and the overall engineering design was developed by Cotenaval (Valencia).

The fleet conversion significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions, achieving an estimated annual reduction per ship of over 9,113 tons of CO₂ and 871 tons of NOₓ, with zero SOₓ emissions and no soot particles. Each vessel’s annual CO₂ savings are equivalent to the emissions of approximately 6,000 cars.

The Martin i Soler engine retrofit, completed by West Sea Shipyard in April 2021, included the installation of a 360 m³ LNG tank (by Cryonorm), providing a range of approximately 1,000 nautical miles (1,850 km / 1,150 mi) on LNG. Her original diesel engines were replaced with MaK Caterpillar dual-fuel engines.
