Hypatia de Alejandria ferry Wiki

The EUR 200 million (USD 246.6 million / for 2 ships) contract with the Italian shipbuilder was signed in January 2017. The cruise ferry is named after Hypatia (350–415 AD), a female mathematician and astronomer from Alexandria, Egypt (then part of the Byzantine Empire). She was the head of Alexandria’s Neoplatonic school, where she taught philosophy and astronomy.

(BALEARIA) Hypatia de Alejandria ferry ship construction

On January 19, 2018, the vessel’s design was officially presented by the shipowner BALEARIA. The company’s first LNG-powered newbuild has a sistership, Marie Curie, identical in design and class. The announcement was made in Madrid, Spain, at the International Tourism Fair, by Adolfo Utor, BALEARIA’s Chairman. Both vessels are being built at Porto Viro Shipyard (near Venice, Italy) by Cantiere Navale Visenti.

The vessel was launched (floated out of drydock) on March 29, 2018, with delivery scheduled for February 2019.

Using LNG (liquefied natural gas) as the ship’s primary fuel reduces CO2 emissions by around 30% and NOx by around 85%, while completely eliminating SOx and soot particles. The new ferries are equipped with dual-fuel LNG engines (total output 20.6 MW) and solar panels. All cabins feature LED lighting and trim control. Digitized onboard services include pet video surveillance and on-demand entertainment. The engines are dual-fuel, capable of burning both marine diesel oil (MDO) and natural gas, a design that optimizes onboard space by reducing fuel storage requirements. Currently, the world’s largest dual-fuel cruise ferry is Tallink Megastar (powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines).

For LNG bunkering, BALEARIA signed a 10-year contract (through 2028) with the Spanish company Gas Natural Fenosa (Barcelona-based). The contract initially covers the ports of Barcelona, Valencia, and Algeciras, with the option to extend to all mainland Spanish ports served by BALEARIA. Abel Matutes was BALEARIA’s (and Spain’s) first ship fitted with an LNG auxiliary engine. LNG bunkering for Hypatia de Alejandría is provided in both Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona.
