Sicilia ferry Wiki

The ship was powered by two MAN marine diesel engines (model 9L48-60, total power output 18.9 MW) and had two controllable-pitch propellers for propulsion. In late October 2018, Balearia contracted Caterpillar Marine to install MaK dual-fuel engines on three vessels (Abel Matutes, Bahama Mama, Martin I Soler). The engine conversions (performed by Caterpillar dealer Finanzauto) were scheduled for early 2019. Under this project, the ships' diesel engines (2x 9M43C, total power output 18 MW) were replaced with 2x MaK 9M46DF (dual-fuel diesel-LNG, power output 8.7 MW each) operating with gearboxes and controllable-pitch propellers. Caterpillar provided dual-fuel conversion kits and all engine modules (ignition, ventilation, exhaust gas systems, and GVU ventilation, valves, and housing).

In November 2018, BALEARIA launched a EUR 443 million (USD 520 million) drydock reconstruction project to retrofit nine ferries for LNG (liquefied natural gas) propulsion. The project was partially funded (20%) by the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility).

All drydock works (at Gibraltar's Gibdock and West Sea's Viana Shipyard) included modifying the diesel engines (to MAN dual-fuel) and installing LNG tanks. Each ship was equipped with dual-fuel (LNG-diesel) MAN marine engines (model 9L-51-60-DF). The Wartsila-built LNG tanks (one or two per vessel) can store up to 425 m3 of LNG, allowing autonomous operation for up to 1800 km (1100 mi). The onboard gas piping system was supplied by Cryospain (Madrid-based), while the engineering design for the project was carried out by Cotenaval (Valencia-based).

The fleet retrofit program resulted in significant fuel savings, with an expected annual emissions reduction per vessel of more than 9113 tons of CO2 and over 871 tons of NOx, along with zero SOx emissions and no soot particles. The annual CO2 reduction per ferry is equivalent to the emissions produced by approximately 6000 cars.
