Marie Curie ferry Wiki
The EUR 200 million (USD 246,6 million / 2-ship) contract with the Italian shipbuilder was signed in January 2017. The cruise ship is named after Marie Curie (1867-1934) - Polish-born (Maria Salomea Skłodowska) and French-naturalized physicist and chemist, pioneer in radioactivity research, the first Nobel Prized woman (1903, Physics) and the first person awarded with it twice (also in 1911, Chemistry). Her husband (Pierre Curie, 1859-1906) shared the Physics prize (1903) with her.
On January 19, 2018, the vessel design was officially presented by the shipowner BALEARIA. Company's second LNG-powered newbuild has a sistership (Hypatia de Alejandria) which is identical (of the same class). The announcement was made in Madrid, Spain (at the International Tourism Fair) by Adolfo Utor (BALEARIA's Chairman). Both vessels are currently under construction at Porto Viro shipyard (near Venice, Italy) being built by Cantiere Navale Visenti.
On November 29, 2018, was the vessel's launch (float-out from drydock), with scheduled delivery in February 2020.
Using LNG (liquefied natural gas) as prime fuel for the ship results in a huge reduction of CO2 emissions (by around 30%) and NOx (by around 85%), and also eliminates SOx and soot particles. The new ferries are also equipped with dual-fuel LNG engines (total power output 20,6 MW), solar panels. The LED lighting and trim control (in all cabins). Digitized onboard services include pet video surveillance and on-demand entertainment. Ferries' engines are not exclusively LNG, but "dual fuel" - capable of burring both liquid marine fuel (MDO / marine diesel oil) and natural gas. This design is for saving onboard space (reducing fuel storage space that is required). Currently, the world's largest dual-engine cruise ferry is Tallink Megastar (Wartsila dual-engine powerplant).
For the LNG bunkering supply, BALEARIA contracted the Spanish company Gas Natural Fenosa (based in Barcelona), with an initial term of 10 years (till 2028). The contract initially applies to ports Barcelona, Valencia, and Algeciras, with an optional extension to all mainland Spain ports operated by BALEARIA. Abel Matutes was BALEARIA's (and Spain's) first ship with installed LGN auxiliary engine. The LNG bunkering for the ferry is provided in both Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona.
On November 17, 2019, BALEARIA and Fred Olsen Express (dedicated to Canary Islands ferry company) celebrated 1 year of operations on the route Huelva-Tenerife (Canary Islands) with the Cyprus-flagged cruiseferry Marie Curie. The cruise ship was delivered to BALEARIA in July 2018 and in 2018-2019 was jointly operated by both companies (BALEARIA and Fred Olsen) with a total of 155 crossings. The new liner increased the Spain-Canaries passenger shipping traffic by ~73%.
