All vehicles must have valid documentation and insurance. Bringing the car’s technical data sheet simplifies boarding checks. When booking, passengers must provide the vehicle’s model, length, and height. Car ferry passengers should arrive at the port 90 minutes before departure.

All BALEARIA ferries have designated storage for bicycles. Bicycles, mopeds, and motorbikes (up to 125 cc) travel free of charge, but must be declared at booking. Special vehicles (over 3 m / 10 ft in height) must be booked via the company’s Call Center (902 160 180).

To accommodate the two LNG fuel tanks, car decks are located only on the upper levels, as the ship has no lower garage decks. Safety procedures include:

  • Apply the handbrake, engage parking gear, turn off the engine, alarm, and lights. Gas cylinders must be switched off. Lock the vehicle.
  • Take only valuables and essential items with you.

  • Access to car decks during the voyage is strictly prohibited.
  • Smoking is forbidden on vehicle decks, in cabins, and in passenger lounges.

Marie Curie ferry Wiki

The EUR 200 million (USD 246.6 million for both ships) contract with the Italian shipbuilder was signed in January 2017. The cruise ferry is named after Marie Curie (1867–1934) — Polish-born (Maria Salomea Skłodowska) and later French-naturalized physicist and chemist, pioneer in radioactivity research, the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize (1903, Physics), and the first person ever awarded twice (also in 1911, Chemistry). Her husband, Pierre Curie (1859–1906), shared the 1903 Physics Prize with her.

On January 19, 2018, BALEARIA officially presented the vessel’s design. The company’s second LNG-powered newbuild has a sistership, Hypatia de Alejandria, identical in design and class. The announcement was made in Madrid, Spain, at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) by Adolfo Utor, BALEARIA’s Chairman. Both ships were under construction at the Porto Viro shipyard near Venice, Italy, built by Cantiere Navale Visentini.

The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on November 29, 2018, with delivery scheduled for February 2020.

Using LNG (liquefied natural gas) as the ship’s primary fuel significantly reduces CO2 emissions (by around 30%) and NOx (by around 85%), while completely eliminating SOx and soot particles. The new ferries are equipped with dual-fuel LNG engines with a total power output of 20.6 MW, as well as solar panels. LED lighting and trim control are installed in all cabins. Digitized onboard services include pet video surveillance and on-demand entertainment. The ferries’ engines are not exclusively LNG-powered but “dual-fuel,” capable of burning both marine diesel oil (MDO) and natural gas. This configuration helps optimize onboard space by reducing the need for separate fuel storage. Currently, the world’s largest dual-engine cruise ferry is the Tallink Megastar, powered by a Wartsila dual-engine plant.

For LNG bunkering, BALEARIA signed a 10-year supply contract (through 2028) with Gas Natural Fenosa, a Barcelona-based energy company. The agreement initially covers the ports of Barcelona, Valencia, and Algeciras, with an option to extend to all mainland Spanish ports served by BALEARIA. The company’s ferry Abel Matutes was the first in Spain to be fitted with an LNG auxiliary engine. LNG bunkering for the Marie Curie is conducted in both Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona.

On November 17, 2019, BALEARIA and Fred Olsen Express (the Canary Islands-based ferry company) celebrated one year of joint operations on the HuelvaTenerife (Canary Islands) route with the Cyprus-flagged cruiseferry Marie Curie. Delivered to BALEARIA in July 2018, the vessel was co-operated by both companies during 2018–2019, completing 155 crossings. The new ship helped increase Spain–Canaries passenger traffic by approximately 73%.
