Pride of America Review
Review of Pride of America
The 2005-built Pride of America cruise ship is operated under the NCL America brand as a unique Project America-class vessel (single ship only).
The vessel (IMO number 9209221) is USA-flagged (MMSI 366994450) and registered in Honolulu, Hawaii.
History - construction and ownership
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, is headquartered in Miami, Florida (USA), and is a publicly traded company listed on the NYSE. NCLH’s major shareholders include Apollo Global Management (USA), Genting Group (Malaysia), and TPG Capital (USA). In 2017, the NCL brand held a worldwide cruise market share of 8.7% by passengers and 8.4% by revenue. NCLH owns the cruise brands NCL, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises (RSSC).

The 2,200-passenger Pride of America entered service in 2005 as the first USA-flagged cruise ship built in more than 50 years. A distinctive feature of the vessel is that her officers and crew are American citizens. Another major advantage is her U.S. registration, which allows her to operate without calling at foreign ports such as Vancouver or Ensenada, as required by the Passenger Vessel Services Act for foreign-flagged ships. Pride of America and her guests celebrate American culture and history, from the kitschy Cadillac Diner to the dignified statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Liberty Dining Room.

The only mainstream cruise ship offering regular round-trip itineraries entirely within the Hawaiian Islands, Pride of America returned to her Honolulu homeport at the end of March 2016 following an extensive refurbishment. The American-flagged ship underwent a three-and-a-half-week drydock in San Francisco, California, which introduced new venues, redesigned public spaces, and refreshed decor in all cabins. This refit was part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s $400 million Norwegian Edge investment program for its existing fleet. The upgrades to Pride of America included:
- Updated flooring, smart HDTVs, new bedding, and furniture in all cabins;
- New whirlpools and loungers in the refurbished pool area;
- Expansion of Mandara Spa, with new Mexican décor and additional treatment rooms;
- Addition of Dolce Gelato, Norwegian’s signature gelateria;
- Addition of Perspectives Photo Studio and SoHo Art Gallery;
- Six computer stations, plus new flooring and furniture in the card rooms and library;
- New décor, furniture, and flooring in the Conservatory;
- A new location, furniture, and flooring for the wedding chapel;
- Renovations across all dining venues, including Skyline Main Dining Room, East Meets West Asian Restaurant, La Cucina, Cagney’s Steakhouse, Jefferson’s Bistro, and the introduction of new menus based on those onboard Norwegian Escape.
Decks and Cabins
Pride of America staterooms (1,109 total in 34 categories) include 81 Suites (including 12 Family Club Balcony Suites), 613 Balcony cabins, 178 Oceanview cabins, and 233 Inside cabins. A total of 740 staterooms are connecting, making them family-friendly.
Most staterooms (approximately 65%) measure between 130 and 145 ft2 (13-14 m2).
The largest accommodation is the 2-Bedroom Deluxe Family Suite, sized at 690 ft2 (64 m2) with an additional 190 ft2 (18 m2) private terrace.
There are 64 wheelchair-accessible cabins for disabled passengers, including 24 that are fully ADA-compliant.
The ship has 14 decks, of which 11 are accessible to passengers and 8 feature cabins.

Pride of America offers 9 restaurants, including two main dining rooms, the complimentary Cadillac Diner, and the casual Aloha Cafe buffet. Five specialty restaurants charge an additional cover fee. Reservations are recommended if you prefer dining at a specific venue or time. Wednesdays and Fridays are the busiest evenings for specialty dining, while Sundays are generally the least busy. Please note that not all specialty restaurants are open on embarkation day. The two main dining rooms, Skyline and Liberty, are stacked vertically at the ship’s aft and follow Americana themes, with Liberty honoring American patriotism and Skyline designed in a Deco-inspired New York City style. Both venues feature pianos, with occasional live background music during dinner.

Hawaii Itineraries
Pride of America’s itinerary program is based on 7-day Hawaiian Islands cruises roundtrip from Honolulu. The voyages visit some of the most popular islands in Hawaii, including Kauai and Maui, with a variety of optional shore excursions. On her standard 7-night itinerary, Pride of America offers overnight stays in Kauai and Maui, along with calls at Kailua-Kona and Hilo, plus an afternoon scenic cruise along the Napali Coast.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, NCL America suspended operations for more than two years (from March 2020 through April 2022). Pride of America’s schedule was revised several times before NCL ultimately resumed Hawaiian Islands cruises from Honolulu on April 9, 2022.

Pride of America Wiki
The NCL Pride ship was initially planned as “Project America 1” (a ship class name), with plans for two 70,000-ton vessels to be built by the US shipbuilder Litton Industries at Ingalls Shipbuilding (Mississippi). This was a US Government–funded program (USD 400 million) aimed at giving US-based companies experience in building passenger ships and returning a US-flagged cruise ship to service for the first time in five decades. After American Classic Voyages Inc (the company behind the project) went bankrupt in 2001, NCL purchased the unfinished vessel at the hull stage. Construction was later completed in Germany at Lloyd Werft’s Bremerhaven shipyard.
American Classic Voyages Inc (founded in 1993 and bankrupt in 2001) owned and operated two travel brands: American Hawaii Cruises and Delta Queen Steamboat Company.
NCL renamed the ship “Pride of America” and modified her dimensions, increasing gross tonnage from 72,000 GT to 80,450 GT and length overall (LOA) from 850 ft (260 m) to 920 ft (280 m).
Delivery was originally scheduled for 2004, but due to storm damage sustained during construction, it was postponed until 2005. A special act of the US Government allowed a vessel predominantly built in Germany to be US-flagged. NCL’s Pride of America is the largest cruise ship on the US register and the only USA-flagged cruise ship, year-round homeported in Honolulu since July 23, 2005.
Pride of America’s class is unique, as no other similar ship has been built. Her inaugural cruise sailed along the US East Coast and lasted from June 18 to June 24. During the maiden voyage, the vessel served as the backdrop for the daytime TV show “Live with Regis and Kelly”. Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa awarded viewers 1,000 free NCL cruises through a promotional campaign prior to the show. From May 16 through June 10, they gave away 20 cruises per day, filling nearly half of the ship’s capacity.
Pride of America’s godmother is Elaine Lan Chao (born 1953 in Thailand, US Secretary of Labor at the time). The naming ceremony was held in New York City on June 17, 2005. Prior to the christening, the godmother held several senior positions within the US administration, all related to transportation and maritime affairs, including Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Transportation, Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, and Deputy Maritime Administrator.
Pride of America refurbishments review
Drydock 2025
Pride of America’s most recent drydock refurbishment took place in May 2025 and was conducted at Vigor Industrial’s shipyard in Portland, Oregon (USA). The project focused primarily on routine maintenance, including hull cleaning and repainting, as well as classification works.
The 2025 refurbishment introduced a new Starbucks Lounge & Bar within the Capitol Atrium (Deck 5) and a pickleball court installed in the existing sports area. The ship’s capacity was increased by adding 15 new staterooms (12 new Club Balcony Suites and 3 Inside cabins) on Deck 12.
Youth facilities (Splash Academy and Entourage) were relocated to Deck 6, previously occupied by the SS America Library, Internet Café, and Chapel.
A new Library and Card Room now occupies the former Shuffles Card Room on Deck 6.
Drydock 2016–2018
The ship also underwent drydocking in June 2021 at Vigor’s shipyard in Portland, Oregon.
The major drydock refurbishments in March 2016 (three weeks) and February 2018 were carried out in San Francisco, California, resulting in the following deck plan changes:
- All passenger staterooms and public areas were renovated, including new décor, furniture, lighting, and flooring.
- The Skyline Main Dining Room received a redesigned entrance, new carpeting, updated furniture upholstery, window drapes, and columns. La Cucina (Italian) was also updated. All other restaurants were redecorated, including East Meets West (Asian), Jefferson’s Bistro (French), and Cagney’s Steakhouse.
- New dining room menus were introduced, based on those of NCL Escape.
- Mandara Spa was expanded with additional treatment rooms and redecorated.
- The Conservatory received new décor, furniture, and flooring.
- The wedding chapel was relocated and updated with new furniture and flooring.
- The card room and library received new furniture and flooring; the library now features six Internet PC stations.
- New venues added included Soho Art Gallery, Perspectives Photo Studio, and Dolce Gelato (gelateria).
- The pool deck area was fully refurbished with a renovated swimming pool, new sun loungers, new Jacuzzi tubs, and a redesigned Ocean Drive Bar.
- All passenger staterooms were upgraded with new furniture, bedding, and flat-screen TVs.
- During the 2016 drydock, Pride of America was retrofitted with new scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning systems). This technology reduces sulfur oxide emissions by the equivalent of approximately 1,500 tons. Norwegian Cruise Line was the first cruise company to retrofit vessels with hybrid scrubber systems while in service. The five in-line scrubbers installed are lightweight and capable of operating in dry mode, as well as in open and closed loops.
Both drydocks (2016 and 2018) were part of NCL’s “Norwegian Edge” fleetwide upgrade program, a two-year project budgeted at USD 400 million. Each drydock cost approximately USD 35–40 million.
