Review of Hanseatic

MS Hanseatic cruise ship was previously operated as Society Adventurer. According to "Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising", this magnificent vessel is the world's only 5-star expedition cruise ship. It specialises in cruises to Antarctica.

NEWS: MS Hanseatic will remain in the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises fleet untill September 2018. MS Bremen will serve as a transition ship to the company's new polar expedition ships (Hanseatic Nature and Hanseatic Inspiration) scheduled for launch in 2019 (April  and October). The two new ships will have the highest ice class for passenger ships (Polar Class 6 / PC6, Lloyds 1AS) and will accommodate up to 230 passengers each (up to 199 on Antarctic cruises).

The vessel will join the fleet of One Ocean Expeditions (polar cruise company) that currently charters two Russian icebreaker ships - Akademik Ioffe and Akademik Sergey Vavilov. The Hanseatic cruise ship will be renamed "RCGS Resolute", starting operations for One Ocean Expeditions in November 2018 (Arctic Canada itineraries). RCGS Resolute ship's passenger capacity will be reduced to 146. The vessel's new name honors the British Royal Navy ship HMS Resolute. The cruise ship was chosen for its modern stabilization and ice classification (compliant with IMO's new Polar Code).

  • According to "Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising and Cruise Ships", the Hanseatic liner is the only in the world 5-star rated expedition cruise ship. Built originally as "ms Society Adventurer", she was renamed as the 4th of Hanseatics after purchased by "Hanseatic Tours". Hapag-Lloyd bought Hanseatic Tours in 1997, and the vessel passed into their ownership. The other Hapag-Lloyd expedition cruise ship is ms Bremen.
  • Hanseatic cruise ship has the highest E4 ice-class hull of a passenger vessel, which allows poking into the remote corners of the Arctic and Antarctica. The ship is equipped for individual activities with fishing rods, snorkeling gear and bicycles. Unlike other expedition ships, Hanseatic provides the luxuries of a top-liner - fine cuisine, spacious cabins, exceptional service. Live orchid plants bloom in public areas and staterooms. Servers offer cool drinks and hot towels to passengers returning from excursions ashore. And the overnight shoe-polishing service - some of the little things that push ms Hanseatic into the top-luxury expedition cruising category.
  • (June 13, 2013 accident) A fire broke out at the shipyard while the ship was in drydock at Bredo (Bremerhaven Germany). This caused additional repairs, so the ship's June and July sailings were cancelled.
  • Hanseatic was the world's second cruise ship with a Northwest Passage Cruise itinerary. In 2012, the vessel made a full transit with a 25-days itinerary leaving from Nome Alaska (on August 14) and ending in Reykjavik Iceland (on September 7). In 2011, the MS Bremen crossed the Passage from Kangerlussuaq Greenland  to Nome AK.
  • In September 2016, the cruise ship did a Northeast Passage transit (CruiseMapper news link) in the Arctic Ocean, along the north coasts of Russia (Asia and Europe), from the Bering Strait to the White Sea. The expedition voyage departed from Tromso Norway on August 16 and ended in Nome Alaska on ended on September 7. The ship stopped in Murmansk, then through Barents Sea, anchored in Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, and through Kara Sea sailed to Severnaya Zemlya. Other stops at anchor took place off Siberia (New Siberian Islands), Wrangel Island and Chukchi Island.
