AmaGaia Review
Review of AmaGaia
The 2028-built MS AmaGaia cruises on Portugal's Douro River, departing from Oporto. While the itineraries embark in Porto, bookings may offer pre-cruise departures from Lisbon (Portugal) or Madrid (Spain). The cruise route explores the Douro River Valley, Portugal's renowned wine region also known as Alto Douro.

Like most luxury riverboats in Portugal, AmaGaia is operated through a partnership between AmaWaterways (a US company), Mystic Cruises (shipowner), and DouroAzul (co-operator).
MS AmaGaia is a specially modified Concerto-class vessel, purpose-built for navigating the Douro River. Her innovative design delivers elegant styling, spacious accommodations, and expansive public areas - offering features rarely found on traditional riverboats.
The ship is registered in Lisbon under the Portuguese flag (flag state), with MMSI number 263442588. She was constructed by WestSEA shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal.
AmaGaia's sisterships include AmaVida (2013), AmaDouro (2019), and AmaSintra (2025).
Decks and Cabins
AmaGaia's 51 passenger staterooms include 4 Twin-Balcony Suites, 29 Twin-Balcony and 4 French Balcony cabins, and 14 with fixed (non-opening) windows. Accommodations are modern and spacious (up to 30 m2 / 325 ft2), most featuring step-out balconies.
Most cabins are equipped with French Balconies (floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors opening to a railing). All Suites also include an additional floor-to-ceiling window. There are 6 cabin categories in total, each with a maximum capacity of two guests.
All staterooms include a private bathroom with a glass-door shower, multi-jet shower head, hairdryer, and premium bath amenities. Additional in-room features include a mirrored vanity table with chair, wardrobe, wireless phone, electronic safe (in the closet), two long-range portable Wi-Fi audio devices (for excursions), daily replenished bottled water, and thermostat-controlled air conditioning. Suites also offer a sitting area with a full-size sofa, a table with two chairs, a mini-bar, and a large bathroom with a full-size bathtub.
Each cabin is equipped with a 42-inch HDTV (local and satellite reception, movies-on-demand) and an infotainment system with complimentary in-room Internet and real-time bridge cam views.
The boat has 4 decks, of which 3 have cabins.
Shipboard Facilities
Dining venues include the main restaurant Douro, "Al Fresco" (an outdoor space with 32 seats), and casual dining at the Bar Lounge and Sun Deck. The ship offers gourmet cuisine with a blend of international and traditional Portuguese specialties, premium service, and an open-air dining experience. Free-flowing local wines are served at lunch and dinner.
Additional amenities include the Main Lounge & Bar (connected to a teak front-deck terrace), Douro Lobby, Gift Shop, and a wellness complex featuring a Spa (with Sauna Room and Treatment Room), Fitness Center, and top-deck facilities (swimming pool, sun loungers, shaded seating area with deckchairs, helipad).
AmaGaia cruise fares include alcoholic and soft beverages, Internet/Wi-Fi, all shore excursions, land transfers, live evening entertainment by local performers, daily enrichment lectures, wine and food tastings, and 24-hour access to coffee, specialty teas, and fresh juices with snacks.

Fares are per person based on double occupancy. Listed rates are indicative and may vary depending on promotions, discounts, group bookings, or last-minute offers.
AmaWaterways also offers discounted airfare packages on major airlines with no flight deviation fees.

Other Douro Azul Portugal cruise ships
AmaGaia Wiki
AmaGaia is the fourth AmaWaterways ship (alongside sisterships AmaVida, AmaDouro, and AmaSintra) operating luxury river cruises in Portugal.
The vessel is operated by AmaWaterways through its "AmaVoyages" division, in partnership with Douro Azul - a Portuguese cruise tour company founded in 1993.
AmaGaia features a newly modified riverboat design, specially adapted to the unique characteristics of the Douro River - one of the largest rivers on the Iberian Peninsula. The river originates near Duruelo de la Sierra (Spain) and flows west to Oporto (Portugal). Renowned for its port wine production, the entire Douro Valley is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region's iconic scenery includes steeply terraced vineyards in the Upper Douro Valley.
Combining modern aesthetics with advanced marine engineering by CMT Engineering Ltd, AmaGaia also offers unique features such as onboard mini-helicopter tours. Among the vessel’s environmentally friendly innovations are solar panels (covering a 155 m² / 1670 ft² area on the awning roof) and a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system. A highlight of AmaWaterways' Portugal cruises is the inclusion of complimentary bike tours. Guests have access to onboard bicycles for use during excursions and tours in each port of call.
