MSC Explora 5 Review

Review of MSC Explora 5

The 2027-built MSC Explora 5 (officially “Explora V”) is the fifth in a series of six MSC EXPLORA-class expedition ships, with fleetmates Explora 1 (2023), Explora 2 (2024), Explora 3 (2026), Explora 4 (2027), and Explora 6 (2028/sistership). These vessels are owned by the MSC Group and operated as a separate fleet under MSC’s luxury travel brand EXPLORA JOURNEYS.

The vessel (IMO number 9977892) will sail under the Malta flag (MMSI tba) and be registered in Valletta. Delivery is planned for Q3 2027.

History - construction and ownership

MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is headquartered in Genoa and Naples. Founded in 1960, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of the MSC Group, the world's second-largest containership operator and the largest privately owned cruise company.

By annual passenger volumes, MSC ranks as the world’s third-largest cruise shipowner, behind Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group.

The EXPLORA ships offer spacious interior public areas, over 2500 m² (~27,000 ft²) of outdoor deck space, an expansive Sundeck (with 64 private cabanas), three outdoor swimming pools (two aft, one forward), and a midship pool covered by a retractable glass roof (an indoor pool with a two-deck sunbathing area and a large LED screen for movies, UHD visuals, and real-time sea views). Additional amenities include several Jacuzzis (indoor and outdoor, including a crew whirlpool), sundecks with poolside dining and lounging, and nine dining venues plus 24-hour in-suite dining.

Explora V’s wellness complex covers 700+ m² (7500+ ft²) and includes an indoor-outdoor Spa (with nine treatment rooms, thermal suites, and a beauty salon) and a Gym (270+ m² / 2900+ ft², equipped with the latest fitness technology) with a dedicated Fitness Studio for classes and personal training. A two-lane Running Track encircles the Deck 12 sunbathing area.

The passenger-to-crew ratio of 1.25 ensures highly personalized and attentive service.

MSC Explora 5 Wiki

The vessel (Fincantieri Monfalcone yard / hull number 6323) has a volume of 63,900 GT, a deadweight of 7,500 tons, and a maximum draught of 7 m. The powerplant consists of four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 8L46F) with a combined output of 38.4 MW (51,500 hp). Propulsion is provided by a PEM fuel-cell–battery hybrid system (two motors) with a combined output of 20 MW (26,820 hp). The registered shipowner is MSC CROCIERE S.p.A., and the registered manager is MSC MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING CO.

In January 2018, strong rumors emerged that MSC was considering launching a new all-inclusive luxury cruise brand. There was also speculation that, instead of creating a separate brand, MSC might establish a parallel “expedition” fleet. In 2020, it was confirmed that a new luxury brand would indeed be created.

On October 18, 2018, the MSC Group and Fincantieri signed an MoA (memorandum of agreement) for four ultra-luxury ships, with a contract value of EUR 2.0 billion (~USD 2.3 billion / ~GBP 1.75 billion). The announcement stated that the first vessel would be delivered in Q2 2023 and that the design was based on a GT volume of ~64,000 tons and approximately 500 staterooms.

  • The final MSC–Fincantieri shipbuilding contract for the four luxury expedition units was signed on March 14, 2019.
  • Both agreements were signed by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Executive Chairman) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri CEO).
  • With this order, the number of MSC ships built by Fincantieri reached 17 units (total investment EUR 14.96 billion / ~USD 17.27 billion / ~GBP 13.6 billion), all scheduled for delivery by 2027. By 2027, MSC’s cruise fleet will comprise 29 vessels.

The combined investment for the four ships (~EUR 2.3 billion) was projected to generate more than EUR 10 billion in economic impact for Italy, including employment, as each ship requires over 7 million man-hours and an average workforce of 2,500 people over more than two years of construction.

The MSC–Fincantieri shipbuilding order for units 5 and 6 was officially signed on September 21, 2023, by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC) and Pierroberto Folgiero (Fincantieri CEO). Unlike their predecessors, Explora 5 (2027) and Explora 6 (2028) are hydrogen-ready, equipped with fuel cells using liquid hydrogen to power onboard hotel operations while docked. Their engines can alternatively run on biogas (from organic waste), syngas (a hydrogen–carbon monoxide blend), and methanol (CH₃OH).

MSC Explora-Class cruise ship (Explora Journeys)

The rumors were officially confirmed in March 2021, when MSC announced the senior management team for the new brand.

  • Michael Ungerer (CEO), Chris Austin (CSO – Chief Sales Officer)
  • Sarah Doyle (CMO – Chief Marketing Officer)
  • Thatcher Brown (Commercial and Strategic Advisor), John Stoll (Destination Experience Advisor)
  • Sacha Rougier (Itinerary Planning, Shore Experience)
  • Prior to joining MSC, Chris Austin worked for Seabourn (SVP Global Sales and Marketing), Sarah Doyle for Bacardi Europe (Vice President Marketing), Thatcher Brown for GHK Dream Cruises (President) and Crystal Cruises Asia (Managing Director), Sacha Rougier for Cruise Gate Hamburg / Center Steinwerder (Managing Director), and John Stoll for Crystal Cruises and Silversea (Director Land Programs).

EXPLORA 5’s construction officially began on July 14, 2025, with the steel-cutting ceremony at Cantieri Navali di Sestri (Genoa). Coincidentally, on the same day at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard, the float-out of EXPLORA 3 and the keel-laying of EXPLORA 4 were also held.

MSC EXPLORA ship technology

All Explora Journeys vessels are constructed at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone Shipyard (near Trieste, Italy).

With Explora I’s steel-cutting on June 10, 2021, MSC officially launched its new expedition-style luxury brand, “Explora Journeys.” The brand’s mandala-inspired logo was designed by Alexa Aponte-Vago (MSC Group CFO, daughter of MSC founder Gianluigi Aponte, and wife of Pierfrancesco Vago).

MSC Explora Journeys logo

Explora Journeys ships incorporate the maritime industry’s most advanced environmental technologies and are designed to transition to alternative energy sources (hybrid powerplants) once these become widely available.

The MSC EXPLORA-class ship design includes provisions for battery storage to support hybrid energy generation, as well as the latest SCR systems (Selective Catalytic Reduction) capable of reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90%. Additional environmental and energy-saving technologies include optimized hydrodynamics and hull coatings (anti-fouling), a smart HVAC system, a USCD-approved ballast water treatment plant, an advanced wastewater treatment system, LED lighting throughout, and CII Trim Optimization software, which adjusts trim and draft to reduce main-engine fuel consumption by up to 3%.

The ships are equipped for shoreside power connections (eliminating CO emissions while berthed) and advanced underwater noise-reduction systems to protect marine ecosystems. All EXPLORA vessels feature comprehensive energy-efficient equipment to optimize engine use and further reduce emissions.

Explora 1 and 2 operate with marine diesel engines running on LSFO (low-sulfur fuel oil), Explora 3 and 4 are powered by LNG engines, while Explora 5 and 6 feature LNG engines supplemented by hydrogen fuel-cell technology. All vessels are RINA-certified (RINA DOLPHIN) for reduced underwater noise and vibration. In line with MSC’s sustainability policies, single-use plastics are eliminated across all ships and shoreside operations.

In late September 2020, Versonix Seaware announced that MSC’s new brand would use its reservation system for online cruise booking. Versonix (founded in 1986), based in San Jose, California, serves more than 20 million passengers annually across more than 100 ships. The company is led by Victor Velton (President) and Yuri Polissky (CEO).

In July 2022, MSC signed a contract with SES S.A. (Luxembourg-based satellite and terrestrial network operator) to supply “O3b mPower” satellite connectivity for the Explora Journeys fleet. O3b mPower combines second-generation MEO satellites (medium Earth orbit, ~8,000 km / ~5,000 mi altitude) with GEO satellites (geosynchronous orbit, ~35,800 km / 22,300 mi altitude).

On July 6, 2022, an MoA was signed for two additional EXPLORA ships (Explora 5 and Explora 6), both LNG- and hydrogen-powered, equipped with LNG-capable engines and containment systems for liquid hydrogen. The hydrogen powers a 6-MW fuel cell responsible for generating all onboard hotel load electricity. With these two vessels (2027 and 2028), MSC’s total investment in the Explora Journeys fleet reached EUR 3.5 billion.

MSC EXPLORA-class vessels were initially priced at EUR 495 million (USD 600 million) per unit. However, the second pair of sisterships (Explora 3 and Explora 4) cost EUR 615 million (USD 730 million / +EUR 120 million each) due to the introduction of LNG propulsion and related design changes. These modifications also delayed their deliveries to 2026 (from 2025) and 2027 (from 2026), respectively.
