Review of Oscar Wilde ferry

MS Oscar Wilde ferry (formerly Tallink Star) is a Ro-Pax passenger vessel currently chartered by the Ireland-based company IRISH FERRIES. The ship has a maximum capacity of 2080 passengers and 450 cars, or alternatively 120 trucks, trailers, or buses. Built in 2007, the vessel currently operates on the Wales UK–Ireland route Holyhead-Dublin via Cherbourg, France (crossing time 2 hours 15 minutes). Previously, the ship served the Rosslare-Pembroke route (crossing time 4 hours).

OSCAR WILDE operates a weekend roundtrip service on the Dublin-Cherbourg route, departing Dublin on Fridays at 18:30 and arriving in Cherbourg on Saturdays at 14:30. The return crossing departs Cherbourg on Saturdays at 18:30, arriving in Dublin on Sundays at 12:30. The ship’s summer schedule (starting in June) includes alternating weekend crossings, with departures from Ireland on Fridays and Saturdays.

Between 2007 and 2023, Tallink Star was operated by the Estonia-based company TALLINK-SILJA LINE, deployed on the Estonia–Finland route Tallinn-Helsinki (crossing time 2 hours). The ship also operated on the Estonia–Germany route Paldiski-Sassnitz.

In May 2023, following a drydock refurbishment, Tallink Star was renamed Oscar Wilde and deployed on the Rosslare–Pembroke route. In April 2023, Irish Continental Group / Irish Ferries announced a long-term charter agreement with Tallink Grupp. The initial charter (starting May 5) is for 20 months, with options for two additional 2-year extensions. Irish Continental Group also holds an option to purchase the vessel.

The shipbuilding contract for Tallink Star was signed on August 1, 2001. Construction began on May 30, 2006, with the keel-laying ceremony held at Aker Yards (STX Finland) in Helsinki. The ship was launched and christened on November 23, 2006, delivered to TALLINK on March 10, 2007, and entered service on April 12, 2007.

At the time of the vessel’s delivery, shipbuilder Aker Yards had 21 passenger ships on order, including 11 cruise ships and 10 ferries.

The ship is powered by four MAK Caterpillar marine diesel engines (models 12M43C and 16V32) with a combined output of 48 MW (64,370 hp). Her propulsion system includes two Wartsila bow thrusters. The hull is ice-strengthened to class 1A Super, allowing year-round operations on Baltic Sea routes under severe ice conditions. Fuel capacity is 973 m3 of MDO (marine diesel oil), while freshwater tanks have a capacity of 550 m3.

The vessel’s cargo capacity totals 2380 lanemeters, providing space for cars, buses, and freight vehicles. Built at STX Finland (yard/hull number 1356), she has a gross tonnage of 36,249 GT, deadweight tonnage of 4700 tons, and a maximum draught of 6.8 m.

During the 2019 drydock refurbishment (January 7–22 at Klaipeda Shipyard, Lithuania), Snack Time Cafe and Starbucks Cafe were completely renovated with new furniture, and Sea Pub was redesigned and upgraded. The Children’s Playground was refurbished and expanded, while shopping areas, corridors, stairways, and hallways received new carpeting. The Business Lounge was updated with new carpets and TVs, and all public restrooms were renovated. In addition to general maintenance works, the propulsion system was upgraded with EnergoProFin, a Wartsila-designed propeller cap with fins rotating together with the propeller to reduce energy losses, underwater noise, and vibrations. The ship was also fitted with a latest-generation navigation system. Under Tallink Grupp’s Ship Renewal Programme, all fleet vessels are refurbished on a regular basis. The program’s budget for the 2013–2018 period was nearly EUR 80 million.

The vessel (IMO number 9364722), as Tallink Star, was Estonia-flagged (MMSI 276672000) and registered in Tallinn. As Oscar Wilde, she is currently Cyprus-flagged (MMSI 209170000) and registered in Limassol.

Oscar Wilde began operations for Irish Ferries on February 10, 2024, sailing from Dublin to Holyhead, joining fleetmate ULYSSES.
