Silja Serenade ferry Wiki
The shipbuilding contract for Silja Serenade was signed on October 26, 1987. Construction of the vessel began on May 29, 1989 (keel-laying at Masa-Yards in Turku, Finland). She was launched and christened on November 6, 1989, delivered to TALLINK on November 15, 1990, and entered service on November 17.
The ship is powered by four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 9R46) with a combined output of 32.5 MW. The vessel's design features an interior promenade running the full length of the ship along the central axis. This revolutionary design allows more passenger cabins with windows overlooking the ship's interior.
During the drydock refit in October 2010, Deck 13 was completely rebuilt. Silja Dream Theater/Cinema, Club Bali (disco), and Chill Club Lounge were removed and replaced with the New York Club Lounge. During the laid-up period (when the Stockholm-Helsinki service was suspended due to the pandemic), the vessel entered drydock at Turku Repair Yard (in Naantali, Finland). The 10-day drydocking (April 20-30) was for regularly scheduled annual maintenance works, including hull cleaning, pipe replacement, electrical works, and machinery inspections and checks.
In January-February 2023, Silja Serenade (Jan 18-Feb 2) and Silja Symphony (Feb 2-16) both entered drydock at Turku Repair Yard in Naantali. No replacement ship operated on the Helsinki-Stockholm route during the docking period. The projects included technical upgrades, hull works, propulsion system and bow thrusters maintenance, and the installation of EnergoProFin propeller hubs to improve fuel efficiency. Several public areas were also renovated, including the Sunflower Spa shower rooms, the Commodore Lounge sauna facilities, Deck 7 public restrooms, and the Executive Suite.
