Viking Gabriella ferry Wiki

The vessel was ordered on September 28, 1989, launched on January 23, 1991, and delivered to Sea-Link Shipping on May 4, 1992. She was christened as "Frans Suell" on May 16 and commenced her maiden voyage on May 17.

The ship's powerplant includes four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model Pielstick 12PC2 6V-400E) with a total output of 23.8 MW. Propulsion is provided by two shaft lines (with fixed-pitch propellers) and three thrusters (two bow and one stern). The hull is ice-strengthened (class "1A Super"), allowing operations in icy waters without icebreaking vessel assistance. Sister ships include Crown Seaways, Pearl Seaways, Tallink Isabelle, and Viking Amorella.

Initially, the ferry operated on the Sweden-Germany route Malmo-Travemunde-Lubeck, with daily departures from both ports. The schedule was later changed to overnight crossings (departures every second day).

In 1994, the vessel was sold to SILJA LINE, reconstructed and refurbished (drydock in Helsinki Finland, at Vuosaari shipyard), renamed "Silja Scandinavia," and deployed on the Stockholm-Turku route until 1996.

In November 1996, the ship was acquired by VIKING LINE. In April 2017, she underwent drydock refurbishment at Vuosaari, was renamed "Viking Gabriella," and on April 17 began service on the Helsinki-Stockholm route. In June 1999, a stop at Aland (Mariehamn) was added to this itinerary.

In early March 2021, VIKING LINE announced plans for July cruises from Helsinki to Turku, Tallinn Estonia, and Mariehamn. The schedule coincided with the Tall Ships Races and Mariehamn's Rockoff Festival. On July 4, Viking Gabriella visited two mainland Finland ports for the first time. The Helsinki–Turku cruise included nine hours ashore, allowing passengers to enjoy the tall sailing ships (moored on the River Aura) or book an optional excursion to Naantali's Muumimaailma (Moomin World), a theme park opened in 1993 based on Tove Jansson’s Moomins books.

The shipowner VIKING LINE takes each of its cruise ferries out of service approximately every two years for drydock refurbishments, technical maintenance, and equipment upgrades.
