Crown Seaways ferry Wiki

The vessel was launched on April 6, 1992, and delivered on June 11, 1994. Two ships were originally ordered by EUROWAY, a Swedish cruise ferry company that operated Sweden-Germany routes between 1992 and 1994 (now defunct). The ferries, named "Frans Kockum" and her sistership "Frans Suell" (now Viking Gabriella), were intended for the MalmoTravemunde/Lubeck service and were ordered from Brodosplit Shipyard in Split, Croatia. Delivery of Frans Suell was delayed by one year (1992 instead of 1991) due to the Croatian War (1991–1995). Due to the route’s poor profitability and further delays in Frans Kockum’s construction, Euroway canceled the order. The under-construction vessel was renamed "Thomas Mann" and transferred in March 1994 to the Fincantieri Trieste shipyard for outfitting and completion.

On May 12, 1994, DFDS acquired the vessel, which was officially delivered on June 11. From Trieste, the ferry sailed to Bremerhaven, Germany. During drydock at Lloyd Werft, two stern sponsons were added to improve stability. On July 26, the ferry—renamed "Crown of Scandinavia"—entered service for Scandinavian Seaways (DFDS) on the Copenhagen–Helsingborg–Oslo route. To reduce fuel and harbor pilotage costs, port Helsingborg was removed from the itinerary in October 2006.

In January 2005, the ferry underwent a complete rebuild at Oresund Shipyard in Landskrona, Sweden.

The vessel is powered by four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model PIELSTICK 12PC2-6V) with a combined output of 23.8 MW. The propulsion system features two shafts with controllable-pitch propellers. The hull is ice-strengthened (class "1A Super"), allowing safe operations in icy waters without icebreaker assistance. Sisterships include Pearl Seaways, Tallink Isabelle, Viking Amorella, and Viking Gabriella.
