Review of Kapitan Kosolapov icebreaker
MS Kapitan Kosolapov ("ледокол Капитан Косолапов") is an icebreaking vessel owned by Rosmorport and operated by Arkhangelsk Sea Port. “Rosmorport” is a Russian FSUE (“Federal State Unitary Enterprise”) created in 2012 by the order of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Transport.
One of the Russian icebreaker ships, Kapitan Kosolapov is accustomed to assist and bring merchant ships in the port of Archangelsk during winter time.
In 2012, Yanmar Europe was contacted in order to join a tender for new propulsion engines for the vessel. Wartsila marine engines operate on marine diesel oil and due to limited spare parts for them, combined with fuel costs' savings, the decision was taken to install new, heavy fuel oil engines.
After several meetings Kapitan Kosolapov was visited in early January 2013 in Archangelsk for inspection. There, the normal temperature during winter is somewhere between minus 20 and minus 30 degrees Celsius. Finally, the sales contract was signed in November 2013. The engines with generators and loose equipment were delivered in August 2014 and as of November 2014 Kapitan Kosolapov was operational again.
Rosmorport's Kapitan Kosolapov itinerary program serves its home-port Arkhangelsk (located Northern Dvina River, which exits into the White Sea). Occasionally, the ship is chartered for geophysical research operations in Kara Sea (part of the Arctic Ocean, between Barents Sea and Laptev Sea).

Note: In case of poor AIS coverage, tracking the vessel's current location will be impossible. You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all icebreakers and ice-breaking research ships in the "itinerary" section of our Icebreakers hub. All states and their fleets are listed there.
