Viking Sobek Review

Review of Viking Sobek

The 2025-built MS Viking Sobek is a Nile River cruise ship acquired by Viking for cruisetours in Egypt. This top-luxury Nile cruiser is named after the ancient Egyptian god Sobek (Sobki), depicted either as a crocodile or a human with a crocodile head.

Viking Sobek's fleetmates in Egypt include Antares (2007), Ra (2018), and the sister ships Osiris (2022), Aton (2023), Viking Hathor (2024), the 2025-built Sobek, Amun, and Thoth, the 2026-built Sekhmet and Ptah, and the 2027-built Geb and Anubis.

Unlike Viking Ra (a fully reconstructed older vessel), her sister ships are newbuild Nile cruisers, featuring deck layouts and venues similar to those on Viking OCEAN vessels.

Like her sister ships, Viking Sobek was constructed at Maasara Shipyard in Cairo, owned by The Arab Contractors (Osman Ahmed Osman & Co).

Bookings for Viking Sobek voyages opened on September 12, 2023. Due to strong demand (with the 2024 season nearly sold out and 2025 selling well), Viking expanded availability by introducing Sobek’s inaugural 2025 season along with additional 2026 departures across its Egypt-based fleet.

Viking Sobek was officially delivered to Viking Cruises on October 10, 2024, at Maasara Shipyard in Cairo. The ceremony was attended by Torstein Hagen (Chairman and CEO of Viking Group).

Decks and Cabins

Viking Sobek staterooms (41 total) are available in 4 categories, including 12 B-Standard Staterooms (22 m2 / 230 ft2), 21 A-Veranda Staterooms (22 m2 / 240 ft2), 6 AA-Veranda Suites (38 m2 / 410 ft2), and 2 ES-Explorer Suites (49 m2 / 525 ft2). The vessel has a maximum passenger capacity of 82 (all staterooms are double occupancy).

Veranda Suites and Explorer Suites feature full-size, step-out balconies (off the living room) and a French balcony (in the bedroom).

The ship has 5 decks, 3 of which accommodate passenger cabins.

All Viking Sobek cabins include the following standard complimentary amenities and services:

Panoramic river views through large windows, most of which are floor-to-ceiling and open to a French balcony. Hotel-style double beds (79 x 63 inches / 200 x 160 cm) with under-bed storage for suitcases, luxury Egyptian bedding (linens, sheets, duvets), deluxe pillows, bedside tables, and wall-mounted reading lamps. Optional twin-bed configurations (two separate lower beds) and a sofa bed are also available.

Each cabin features a spacious lounge area furnished with a low table, comfortable sofa (non-sofabed), club chairs, mirrored vanity (writing desk) with chair, and wardrobe (with wooden hangers). En-suite bathrooms include a glass-enclosed shower cubicle, double-sink vanity, anti-fog LED mirror, WC-toilet, under-sink storage, premium Freyja bath products, and luxury bathrobes. Slippers are available upon request.

Additional in-cabin amenities include daily replenished bottled water, a dedicated cabin steward, twice-daily housekeeping service, 40-inch smart HDTV (infotainment system, satellite reception, on-demand movies), multiple USB ports, refrigerator/mini-bar, electronic safe (in the closet), telephone, hairdryer, 110/220 V outlets, and individual air-conditioning.

The ship’s largest accommodations (Explorer Suites) also include additional perks such as two HDTVs, binoculars, a coffee machine, a complimentary beverage package (Silver Spirits), Viking Air Plus (VIP services), private airport transfers, complimentary laundry, breakfast-only room service, shoeshine service, daily replenished minibar drinks (sparkling wine, wines, beers, soft drinks), and a daily fruit basket.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

Viking Sobek features an indoor Bar Lounge, Aquavit Terrace (outdoor lounge), and a Main Dining Room/Restaurant. Unlike most large Nile cruisers, the vessel does not include a wellness complex (spa, relaxation lounge, massage rooms, hair salon, or fitness center).

The three-story Atrium is a panoramic midship area (on decks 2, 3, and 4) with an open-floor design supported by eight columns. Floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows on both port and starboard sides, along with a skylight (glass roof on Deck 5), provide abundant natural light.

The Atrium’s lower level (Middle Deck) houses the Lobby Hall with the Reception/Guest Services Desk (24-hour assistance, cashier services, cruise tour information) and a small seating area.

The mid-level (Upper Deck) includes a seating area (portside), a starboard Shop (offering gifts, souvenirs, and Viking-branded merchandise), and public restrooms.

The upper level (Pool Deck) features the Library (starboard seating area with books and magazines) and a portside PC Corner (Internet-connected computers).

Viking Cruises Egypt (Nile River) ship Atrium

Onboard public spaces are spacious and well-appointed. Interiors combine Viking’s Scandinavian design with traditional Egyptian elements, including Arabic geometric patterns and terrazzo flooring.

The Middle Deck (Deck 2) serves as the embarkation level, with two midship entrances (portside and starboard) for passenger boarding and disembarkation.

The aft Pool Deck (Deck 4) features an infinity pool with a sunbathing area furnished with premium loungers and tables. Adjacent is the Aquavit Terrace, an outdoor lounge with shaded seating.

Forward on the Pool Deck is the indoor Bar Lounge (Salon), connected via glass doors to an open-air bow-facing promenade.

The Sun Deck (Deck 5) offers a large forward sunbathing area with deluxe loungers and a shaded seating section furnished with sofas, chairs, and tables.

One lift (passenger elevator) connects all cabin decks, and all decks are also interconnected via forward, midship, and aft stairways.

Viking Nile River cruise itineraries in Egypt

Previously, Viking Cruises Egypt operated Nile River and Lake Nasser itineraries using chartered vessels. Since 2020, the fleet consists entirely of Viking-owned ships operating roundtrip Nile cruises from Luxor, with fly-cruise packages that include domestic flights (Cairo-Luxor-Cairo).

Viking’s Nile cruise tour is themed “Pharaohs and Pyramids.”

Viking Cruises Nile River itinerary map (Egypt)

The 12-day itinerary includes a 7-day Nile River cruise and begins with a 3-night hotel stay in Cairo, featuring visits to the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Great Pyramids of Giza, and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Guests then fly to Luxor to visit Karnak and Luxor temples before embarking on a 7-night roundtrip cruise to Aswan.

The following table outlines the 7-day cruise itinerary:

Date / TimePort
DAY 1-2 (overnight)Departing from Luxor
DAY 3Dendera/Qena
DAY 4Esna
DAY 5Aswan
DAY 6Kom Ombo, Aswan
DAY 7Luxor, Edfu
DAY 8Arriving in Luxor

Included tours feature a private visit to Nefertari’s tomb (Valley of the Queens), excursions to Khnum Temple (Esna) and the Dendera Temple complex (Qena), and a visit to a Nubian village.

While many Nile cruise vessels (out of approximately 200) are marketed as 5-star, standards vary widely. Viking’s Nile cruises stand out by offering a premium experience with higher-quality accommodations, dining, and service—reflected in higher pricing compared to typical Egyptian river cruises.

Viking Sobek cruise fares include:

  • 11 guided excursions in Egypt (with headsets provided)
  • Complimentary onboard Internet and beverages (beer, wine, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner)
  • All government taxes and port fees
  • Domestic flights within Egypt (Cairo–Luxor and Aswan–Cairo)
  • Airport transfers (on embarkation and disembarkation dates, when flights are booked through Viking Air)

Key features of Viking’s Nile cruise tour include:

  • 7-night Nile River cruise
  • 12-day itinerary covering 1 country, 6 ports, and 1 inland city, including a 3-night hotel stay in Cairo (e.g., Nile Ritz-Carlton) and 1 additional hotel night (e.g., InterContinental Cairo)
  • Visits to 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the Dendera Temple complex
  • Onboard enrichment program led by an expert Egyptologist (who also guides all shore excursions)
  • Visits to a private home in a traditional Nubian village (from Aswan)
  • Included meals: 11 breakfasts, 9 lunches, and 9 dinners, featuring both Egyptian specialties and international cuisine

Signature onboard events include the Welcome Cocktail Reception and the Farewell Dinner.
