Astoria Grande Review
Review of Astoria Grande
The 1996-built (as "MS Clubschiff") cruise ship Astoria Grande was operated between 1996-2021 as "AIDAcara" – the first vessel of the German travel brand AIDA Cruises. The "AIDA Selection" fleet also included AIDAvita, AIDAaura, and AIDAmira (now Ambassador Ambition).
For AIDA Cruises, the vessel (IMO number 9112789) was Italy-flagged (MMSI 247117300) and registered in Genova. Astoria Grande was later reflagged to Panama (MMSI 352978227, port of registry Colon) and is currently Palau-flagged (MMSI 511100759), registered in Koror.
Following the sale of AIDAcara, the registered shipowners included MESTER COMMERCIAL LTD (as of August 2021, managed by Tschudi Ship Management AS/Estonia), AQUILON SHIPPING COMPANY LLC (September 2021), and GOODWIN SHIPPING LTD (since July 2022, under the management of Camelot Maritime Ship Management Ltd/Turkey).
IMPORTANT: In October 2024, the shipowner listed Astoria Grande for immediate sale, with an asking price between US$40-50 million, through the online brokerage company QPS Marine Ships.
History – Construction and Ownership
On June 23, 2021, Carnival Corporation (then the shipowner) announced the sale of AIDAcara to an undisclosed buyer. The vessel left the fleet after 25 years of service with AIDA.
- A total of 14 itineraries (scheduled departures between October 8, 2021, and March 3, 2022) were canceled.
- The ship had planned voyages in Southeast Asia, with homeporting in Singapore.
- For the canceled AIDAcara cruises, see the ship's Wiki section.
As of June 23, the vessel was docked at Port Tallinn, Estonia (since May 18).
In August 2021, it was announced that the vessel, renamed "Astoria Grande", was managed by the Cyprus-based Mester Commercial Ltd. However, IHS Markit Ltd (a London UK-based ship register) listed Akvilon Shipping (Moscow-based company/Akvilon Ltd OOO) as the bareboat owner. With Astoria Grande, the new cruise line brand "Akvilon" was launched. Akvilon's partner, Miray Cruises (a travel company based in İstanbul, Turkey), handles booking and port management services for the ship’s Turkish itineraries.
Following the acquisition, the vessel remained docked at Port Yalova (Turkey). Astoria Grande's maiden voyage was initially scheduled for March 5, 2022 (out of Sochi, Russia) but was later postponed to July 16 (7-day roundtrip from Sochi).
The 1200-passenger ship AIDAcara offers a relaxing and family-friendly experience. She is a resort-class vessel and one of the smaller ships in the fleet, yet large enough to include amenities like a salon, spa, and mini-golf. AIDAcara was the first of AIDA's "club ships."
In addition to the crew, AIDAcara passengers are served by Pepper robots – humanoid robots introduced fleetwide in 2016. These cyborg assistants greet and guide passengers during embarkation and help throughout the voyage by offering information and tips on dining, entertainment, enrichment programs (workshops, scheduled events), shopping, and shore excursions. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in English, German, and Italian. They can also recognize human emotions through voice tone and facial expressions.

This route attracted both international tourists from Turkey and Egypt (with embarkation in Kusadasi and Alexandria) and domestic travelers, as both countries remain popular summer destinations for Russian tourists.

Astoria Grande Wiki
AIDAcara was the first-ever ship of AIDA Kreuzfahrten. She was originally built as a "Club Ship" (Clubschiff in German) for Deutsche Seetouristik (Arkona Reisen) and launched under the name "AIDA" (1996–2001). After P&O Cruises transferred the vessel in 1999, she became part of AIDA’s fleet and was renamed "AIDAcara" (2001–2021). In 2005, she underwent a major refurbishment aimed at increasing the number of passenger cabins.
Interestingly, AIDAcara was the world’s first cruise ship to introduce the innovative “club ship” concept. As one of the fleet's smallest vessels, she was very family-friendly. The largest area onboard was Das Theater. AIDAcara also featured a biking station and a dedicated fleet of bicycles for shore excursions. The onboard language was German, as most AIDA passengers were from German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).
The AIDAcara vessel (IMO number 9112789) was Italy-flagged (MMSI 247117300).
AIDAcara Refurbishment 2016 Review
AIDAcara's last drydock refurbishments were in 2018 (February 11–March 9) and 2019 (February 6–23), mainly for general maintenance, repairs, and minor upgrades. However, the drydock in 2016 (January 26–February 6) brought more significant changes, including remodeled bars.
The project, conducted by NAVANTIA Shiprepairs in Cadiz, Spain, included routine maintenance and renovation of all passenger staterooms.
New carpeting (approx. 1,800 m² / 19,400 ft²) was installed in all public areas.
The hull and superstructure were repainted (over 12,000 m² / 129,200 ft² of surface area above and below the waterline).
The Pool Bar (Deck 10) and Calypso Bar (Deck 9) were redesigned. An outdoor seating area was added on Deck 9. The Anytime Bar (disco nightclub on Deck 11) was refurbished, with a redesigned dance floor.
The gym (Deck 9) received new equipment, including cardio scan diagnostics.
The AIDA Store (Deck 8) was expanded to offer the GAASTRA clothing brand. The jewelry area was redesigned to include items from the Danish brand Bering.
A new height-adjustable photo kiosk was added to the digital stations at the Photo Gallery & Shop (Deck 8).
This refurbishment was specially planned for the cruise ship’s 20th anniversary. Christened on June 7, 1996, AIDA’s first vessel marked the beginning of a new era in the German cruise market.
An earlier major drydock refurbishment in 2013 upgraded all cabin amenities. Public spaces were extensively renovated, with new carpets and furniture throughout.
AIDAcara World Cruise 2017
In 2017, AIDA launched its first world cruise aboard AIDAcara.
The 116-day World Cruise (October 17, 2017–February 10, 2018) visited 41 ports in 23 countries across 5 continents. The westbound itinerary featured a Transatlantic crossing and a Suez Canal transit.
This roundtrip from Hamburg, Germany, included the following ports of call: Hamburg (departure), Sea Day, Southampton, Sea Day, Lisbon, Sea Day, Funchal Madeira, Sea Day, Praia (Cape Verde), Sea Day, Recife (Brazil), Sea Day, Rio de Janeiro, Sea Day, Montevideo (Uruguay), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Sea Day, Puerto Madryn, Sea Day, Ushuaia, Sea Day, Punta Arenas, Sea Day, Puerto Montt, Sea Day, Valparaiso-Santiago (Chile), Sea Day, Robinson Crusoe Island, Sea Day, Hangaroa, Sea Day, Bounty Bay, Sea Day, Papeete (Tahiti), Moorea, Bora Bora, Sea Day, Waitangi, Auckland (New Zealand), Sea Day, Sydney (Australia), Sea Day, Cairns, Sea Day, Darwin, Sea Day, Komodo Island, Lembar, Bali, Sea Day, Singapore, Port Klang, Langkawi, Sea Day, Colombo (Sri Lanka), Sea Day, Male (Maldives), Sea Day, Salalah, Sea Day, Aqaba, Suez Canal, Limassol, Sea Day, Valletta (Malta), Sea Day, Malaga, Sea Day, Leixoes-Oporto, Ferrol, Sea Day, Honfleur (France), Sea Day, Hamburg (disembarkation).
AIDA's 2017 World Cruise prices started from USD 15,580 per person (double occupancy, inside cabin).
In 2018, AIDAaura became the company’s second world cruise ship, also departing roundtrip from Hamburg (October 8, 2018–February 2, 2019). On December 19, 2017, during the world voyage, AIDAcara became the first AIDA ship to dock at Sydney Harbor (White Bay Cruise Terminal, Sydney, Australia). The ship was commanded by Captain Tommy Moller and carried around 1,100 passengers.
