Roseau Dominica is the country's capital, largest city and main seaport. The city is part of Saint George parish and is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, Roseau River and Morne Bruce. Roseau has population around 17,000 and is the oldest settlement on Dominica island.
The city is located on the island's western coast and features a combination of contemporary and colonial French architecture. It is also Dominica's main port for foreign shipping trade, with exports including Bay Tree essential oil, vegetables, fruits (bananas, oranges, grapefruit), cocoa. The country's economy is also dependent on tourism and the service sector.
Roseau ferry terminal serves a regularly scheduled service that directly links Port Roseau with Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe (to the north), Castries Saint Lucia and Fort-de-France Martinique (both to the south).
In September 2017, Dominica suffered severe damages caused by Hurricane Maria. Before the hurricane, the island had scheduled 219 cruise ship calls (season 2017-2018). Following the disaster, calls were reduced to just 34, the first of which was on December 28 (Sea Cloud 2).
On July 10, 2018, Carnival Cruise Lines returned to Dominica with Carnival Fascination via regularly scheduled 7-day itineraries leaving roundtrip from Bridgetown (Barbados) and San Juan (Puerto Rico). Itineraries also visit Castries (St Lucia Island), Basseterre (St Kitts Island), Philipsburg (St Maarten Island) and Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas Island, USVI). Carnival's last visit to Dominica was in 2010.
For season 2018-2019, here was homeported the 2590-passenger ship Celebrity Summit, with scheduled 9 port calls. The total number of booked ship calls for the season was 189, with expected around 304,000 cruise tourists.
