Pets on the Ship

Pets may travel in Pet-Friendly cabins or onboard kennels. They are not permitted to remain in vehicles.

Dogs must be leashed and muzzled outside the cabin or vehicle, including on the pet exercise area (Deck 7). Owners are advised to toilet their pets before boarding.

During check-in, the dog’s microchip is scanned and passport checked. A sticker is placed on the vehicle windshield for identification and must remain during the voyage. Pets are allowed only in designated areas: pet-friendly cabins and the exercise zone on Deck 7. Exceptions apply only to registered assistance dogs.

Dedicated crew greet vehicles carrying pets. Animals stay briefly in vehicles while owners check in. Before departure, pet owners are called to the Reception Desk and escorted with their pets to the cabin. One hour before arrival, an announcement instructs pet owners to return to their cabins and prepare to be escorted back to the car deck. Pets must stay in vehicles during disembarkation. Owners are not permitted to remain in the vehicles.

In rough weather, pets must stay in cabins; access to the exercise area is restricted.

There are 12 dog kennels available (small and large). Pre-booking is required. Small kennels suit breeds like Toy Poodle, Terrier, Jack Russell; large kennels are for breeds like German Shepherd, Labrador, Boxer, Pointer.

Car Decks

Safety procedures for car decks include:

  • Passengers needing assistance should visit the 24-hour Information Desk.
  • Apply the handbrake, place the vehicle in park or first gear, switch off ignition, alarms, electronics, and headlights. Shut off gas cylinders and lock the vehicle.
  • Take only valuables and essential hand luggage.
  • Note your vehicle’s location and deck/stairway number.
  • Access to car decks is prohibited during the voyage.
  • Smoking is not allowed on vehicle decks, in cabins, or lounges.
  • Wait for the announcement before returning to your vehicle.

Engines must not be started until instructed to prevent air pollution.

Alasuinu ferry Wiki

The cruise ship Alasuinu (Jinling Weihai Shipyard/hull number W0279) is the 10th E-Flexer in the series. She is owned by Stena RoRo and operated under charter by Marine Atlantic Canada. The vessel features an innovative design and cutting-edge marine technologies. Her Wartsila LNG engines operate with zero sulfur emissions, significantly reducing COx and soot particulates compared to diesel-powered ships. The diesel-electric propulsion system includes Azipod units (azimuth thrusters), a configuration widely used on large cruise ships for its lower noise, reduced vibrations, and optimized fuel consumption at lower speeds. The total power output is 30.4 MW.

Wartsila supplies the vessel's engines, batteries, gearboxes, and propellers.

For each LNG-powered E-Flexer, Wartsila has signed a 10-year technical support agreement with STENA RoRo. For MS Alasuinu, this extends through November 2034.

Alasuinu typically switches to LNG+battery or battery-only modes when approaching ports and while docked.

The ship is fitted with a Leclanché Navius MRS-3 Marine Rack System, which provides up to 10 MWh of electricity for propulsion during port maneuvers. The battery system alone supports speeds of up to 17.5 knots (32 kph / 20 mph). With a total capacity of 11.5 MWh and up to 940 volts, the battery system nearly doubles the storage capacity of other large Ro-Pax hybrid vessels such as the 2019-built Color Hybrid. The hybrid setup reduces fuel use by ~9% and greenhouse gas emissions by ~15% compared to traditional diesel propulsion.

In August 2021, Deltamarin Ltd (a 1990-founded naval architecture and engineering firm based in Turku, Finland) was contracted by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Co Ltd to design three E-Flexer units (the 10th, 11th, and 12th in the series). The 10th vessel, Alasuinu, was built for Marine Atlantic and features a smaller capacity of 1,100 passengers and 2,571 lanemeters for wheeled cargo.

In June 2022, Leclanché SA (France) introduced the Navius MRS-3—its third-generation marine battery system, succeeding the MRS-2. MRS-3 features faster charging, a more compact size (46 battery strings), and a liquid-cooled design that extends cycle life and increases energy density by ~50% compared to air-cooled systems. The product comes with a 10-year warranty.

MS Alasuinu also features an 8-MW shore-power connection for battery charging while docked.

The name "Ala'suinu", meaning "traveler" in Mi'kmaw, was officially announced on August 17, 2023, by Marine Atlantic President and CEO Murray Hupman. The name was suggested by company employees and trademarked on July 10.

The charter agreement between STENA RoRo and Marine Atlantic was signed on July 21, 2021, coinciding with STENA’s order placed with AVIC CMI Jinling Weihai Shipyard. Delivery of MS Alasuinu is scheduled for November 30, 2024.

Like the first LNG-powered E-Flexer, the Salamanca, Alasuinu is equipped with two Wartsila 12V46DF dual-fuel engines. Previous E-Flexers were powered by Caterpillar MaK M43C engines. The more powerful Wartsila engines (13.74 MW each) provide a higher service speed (23 knots compared to 22 knots on earlier E-Flexers), ensuring reliable operation on the Newfoundland–Nova Scotia route.

The vessel (IMO number 9946257) is currently Cyprus-flagged (MMSI 209847000) and registered in Limassol. Upon delivery to Marine Atlantic, she will be reflagged to Canada (MMSI tba) and registered in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

MS Alasuinu is bareboat chartered by Marine Atlantic Inc. from STENA North Atlantic Ltd (a STENA RoRo subsidiary) for a period of 10 years (2024–2034). The agreement includes a purchase option exercisable by Marine Atlantic in 2028.

Stena E-FLEXER Ship Technology

E-FLEXER-class ferries were developed by Deltamarin, a subsidiary of AVIC International, specializing in ship design and offshore engineering.

The first six E-FLEXERs have a length of 215 m (704 ft), beam of 28 m (91 ft), maximum draft of 6.4 m (21 ft), and cargo deck capacity of 3,100 lanemeters, with additional space for 120 cars.

The 7th and 8th units are larger, at 45,000 GT, 240 m (790 ft) LOA, and freight capacity of 3,600 lanemeters. They feature 263 cabins and a passenger capacity of 1,200. Interior layouts vary by charter client, with design work by Figura Arkitekter AB (Sweden) and Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH (Germany).

The first five E-FLEXERs are powered by two MaK M43C marine diesel engines (total output 25.2 MW / 33,800 hp), supplied by Caterpillar. These engines are "LNG-ready" (compatible with LNG after modifications). Four E-FLEXERs (ships 6, 10, 11, and 12) are LNG-powered by original design.

Stena E-FLEXER vessels rank among the world's most energy-efficient passenger ships ever built.
