Guillaume de Normandie ferry Review
Review of Guillaume de Normandie ferry
MS Guillaume de Normandie is a Ro-Ro passenger ferry owned by STENA LINE and operated under charter by the French company BRITTANY FERRIES. The ship has a maximum capacity of 1,310 passengers and cargo capacity for 470 cars or 120 trailers (alternatively, 52 cars plus 63 trucks). The vessel will be launched in 2024 and is scheduled for delivery/inauguration in May 2025.
Guillaume de Normandie is intended for the UK–France routes Portsmouth–Caen/Ouistreham (crossing time ~6 hours) and Portsmouth–St Malo (crossing time ~11 hours).
Of the same design and deployed on the same routes is the sistership Saint-Malo (2024).
Note: For construction milestones and details on E-FLEXER technology/machinery, see the ship's Wiki section.
Cabins
As a cruiseferry, Guillaume de Normandie has a total of 386 passenger cabins (including 54 Luxury, 5 Family, 27 Pet-friendly, and Truck Driver cabins), all air-conditioned and with en-suite bathrooms, LCD TV (free on-demand movies), hairdryer, and writing/dining table. The ferry company provides bed linens, towels, and toiletries. The ship additionally offers reclining seats. A total of 8 staterooms are wheelchair-accessible (adapted for passengers with disabilities).
Passenger stateroom categories include 2-Berth Commodore Suite, 2-Berth Commodore Club, 4-Berth Outside “Club Plus,” 4-Berth Outside “Club,” 4-Berth Inside, and 2-Berth Inside, as well as Wheelchair-Accessible (Premium Plus Outside and Inside) and Pet-Friendly (doubles and quads, both with linoleum flooring). All 4-bed staterooms have either twin beds (lower fixed single beds) or bunk beds (lower and upper Murphy beds folding from the wall).
Unlike passenger staterooms, freight driver cabins (aft on Deck 8) lack en-suite bathrooms and have shared bathing and toilet facilities.
MS Guillaume de Normandie’s largest staterooms are the Commodore Suites. These luxury accommodations feature a queen-size bed (160×200 cm; premium mattress; high-quality cotton linens), comfortable seating (two armchairs and a round coffee table), a writing/dining table (with tea- and coffee-making facilities), and a complimentary mini-bar (small refrigerator stocked with bottled water, soft drinks, and light snacks).
Commodore Suite and Commodore Club passengers also receive complimentary access to the C-Club Premium Lounge (forward on Deck 8).
Reserved lounge seats and baby cots (for infants under 2 years; available on request) are also offered.
All passengers must vacate their staterooms 30 minutes prior to homeport arrival.
Of the 10 decks, 3 have passenger cabins.

Pets on the ship
BRITTANY FERRIES is a DEFRA (UK and EU)–approved pet carrier under the ET140 Pet Travel Scheme. Pets may travel either in a pet-friendly passenger cabin or in a kennel (dogs). Pets are not allowed to stay in vehicles.
Dogs must be muzzled and leashed when outside vehicles or staterooms, including in the pet-exercise area (Deck 7). It is recommended that dogs be exercised and toileted prior to boarding.
At onboard check-in, each dog’s microchip is scanned and its passport checked. A sticker is placed on the car’s windscreen to ensure appropriate parking; do not remove it during the voyage. Pets are allowed only in designated staterooms (pet-friendly) and in the ship’s pet-exercise zone (Deck 7), and not in other public areas. Registered assistance dogs are the only exception.
Vehicles carrying pets are greeted on the car deck by dedicated crew. Pets remain temporarily in vehicles while owners exit the garage for check-in. Shortly before departure, pet owners are called to Reception and escorted with their pets between the car deck and their cabin. One hour before arrival, a PA announcement asks pet owners to return to their cabins; crew then escorts them to their vehicles, where the animals remain until arrival. Pet owners are not permitted to remain in their vehicles. After arrival, a PA announcement invites pet owners to return to their vehicles.
For safety reasons, during bad weather, pets must remain in cabins and access to exercise areas is suspended.
The cruiseferry provides 12 kennels (small and large). Kennels must be pre-booked. Small kennels are recommended for breeds such as Toy Poodle, King Charles Spaniel, Terrier, and Jack Russell. Large kennels suit breeds such as German Shepherd, Labrador, Dalmatian, Boxer, Pointer, and Setter.

Guillaume de Normandie ferry Wiki
The shipbuilding order with China Merchants for the 10th (Alasuinu), 11th (Saint-Malo), and 12th (Guillaume de Normandie) E-FLEXERs was placed by Stena RoRo in May 2022. Stena’s equipment order with Wartsila Marine Power was placed on June 21 and signed by Hakan Agnevall (Wartsila’s President and CEO), Christophe Mathieu (Brittany Ferries’ CEO), and Per Westling (Stena RoRo’s Managing Director).
The ferry Guillaume de Normandie (Jinling Weihai Shipyard / hull number W0275) is the 12th E-Flexer, owned by Stena RoRo and operated under charter by Brittany Ferries. She features an innovative design and advanced marine technologies. Her Wartsila LNG engines run on fuel with zero sulfur emissions, resulting in lower CO₂ and soot particulates compared to diesel-only vessels. The diesel-electric propulsion uses modern Azipod units (azimuth thrusters)—a system widely used on large cruise ships for reduced noise and vibration and optimized fuel consumption at lower speeds. The power plant’s combined output is 30 MW.
Wartsila’s supply scope includes the main and auxiliary engines, gearboxes, batteries, propulsion machinery (CPPs/controllable pitch propellers and azimuthing thrusters), the LNG supply system, and the automated control/monitoring/navigation system (NACOS MULTIPILOT Platinum), integrating navigation with IP radar and ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System).
For each LNG-powered E-Flexer, Wartsila signed a 10-year service agreement with Brittany Ferries to provide technical support (for MS Saint-Malo through July 2034).
The ship typically switches to LNG+battery or battery-only modes when approaching harbors and while alongside (berthed).
The battery storage (Leclanché Navius MRS-3 Marine Rack System) guarantees a maximum consumption of 10 MWh (electricity) by the propulsion system during port maneuvering. On battery power alone, the vessel can reach a maximum speed of 17.5 knots (32 kph / 20 mph). The lithium-ion batteries’ total capacity is 11.5 MWh (max 940 V), nearly double the storage capacity installed on new large Ro-Pax vessels with hybrid propulsion (such as the 2019-built Color Hybrid). The hybrid system reduces fuel consumption by ~9% and greenhouse gas emissions by ~15% compared to conventional diesel propulsion.
In August 2021, Deltamarin Ltd (a 1990-founded naval architecture and engineering firm based in Turku, Finland) was contracted by the builder (China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Co. Ltd) to deliver the complete design packages for three Stena E-Flexer units (10th, 11th, and 12th in the series) for two clients—Marine Atlantic (10th E-Flexer) and Brittany Ferries (11th and 12th). Marine Atlantic’s ferry has a smaller capacity (1,100 passengers and 2,600 lane meters).
In June 2022, the French company Leclanché SA officially announced the new Navius MRS-3 (third-generation marine battery system, an upgrade to MRS-2). MRS-3 features major enhancements, including faster charging, a more compact footprint (46 battery strings), and liquid cooling that increases lifespan/cycle life (10-year guarantee) and boosts energy density (~50% higher than air-cooled systems).
Saint-Malo also has a shore power connection (for battery charging while berthed) with 8 MW capacity.
The ferry’s name (Guillaume de Normandie) was officially announced on May 4, 2023.
On January 12, 2023, Leclanché SA was contracted by Stena RoRo to provide the battery systems for Brittany Ferries’ newest ships (Saint-Malo and Guillaume de Normandie). The contract was signed by Staffan Stenfelt (Stena RoRo’s General Manager Newbuilding), Phil Broad (Leclanché E-Mobility’s CEO), and Arnaud Le Poulichet (Brittany Ferries’ Director of Engineering and Maintenance).
Guillaume de Normandie’s cargo capacity is 2,517 lane meters—1,388 lane meters for passenger cars (up to 470 vehicles) and 1,129 lane meters for trucks (max 63) or other wheeled cargo.
Construction began with the steel-cutting ceremony on September 5, 2022, at AVIC Weihai Shipyard (Weihai, China).
She was launched (floated out) on October 7, 2023.
Official delivery to STENA RORO is scheduled for May 2025.
Like the first LNG-fueled E-Flexer (Salamanca), Guillaume de Normandie has two Wartsila 12V46DF (dual-fuel) main engines, whereas earlier E-Flexers are fitted with two Caterpillar M43C (MaK) engines. The more powerful Wartsila units (13.74 MW each) allow a higher service speed (23 kn vs 22 kn on other E-Flexers), as required by Brittany Ferries to maintain the Portsmouth–Bilbao schedule. Salamanca additionally has three Wartsila 20DF auxiliary engines (also dual-fuel) with GVUs (gas valve units) that regulate LNG feed pressure according to engine load.
The vessel (IMO 9946324) was initially Cyprus-flagged (MMSI 210374000) but, following delivery, was re-flagged to France (MMSI 228457600) and French-crewed/staffed. She is named after Guillaume de Normandie (William the Conqueror, 1028–1087), Duke of Normandy (1035–87) and King of England (1066–87).
Guillaume de Normandie is Brittany Ferries’ fourth LNG-powered ship and the fleet’s first with hybrid battery technology. Her sistership is Saint-Malo (2024). Both ferries were intended for the UK–France route Portsmouth–Caen/Ouistreham, replacing the company’s oldest ships—Bretagne (on Saint-Malo’s routes) and Normandie (on Guillaume de Normandie’s routes).
Brittany Ferries’ Portsmouth–Caen service was launched in 1986.
Like Saint-Malo, Guillaume de Normandie is bareboat-chartered by Brittany Ferries from Stena RoRo for 10 years. The bareboat/demise charter with STENA includes a purchase option for BRITTANY FERRIES after four years (in 2029).
On May 16, 2022, Brittany Ferries signed a long-term partnership with Titan LNG (Amsterdam, Netherlands-based) to supply both new Ro-Pax vessels with LNG and LBM (Liquefied Bio-Methane). The deal was signed by Frédéric Pouget (Brittany Ferries’ Operations and Ports Director) and Regine Portocarero (Titan LNG’s Business Development Manager).
Stena E-FLEXER ship technology
E-FLEXER-class ferries were designed by Deltamarin (a subsidiary of AVIC International), specialists in ship design and offshore engineering and construction.
The first six E-FLEXERs have an LOA of 215 m (704 ft), a beam of 28 m (91 ft), a maximum draft of 6.4 m (21 ft), and cargo deck capacity of 3,100 lane meters (plus additional space for 120 cars).
The 7th and 8th FLEXERs are larger—45,000 GT, LOA 240 m (790 ft), freight capacity 3,600 lane meters, 263 cabins, passenger capacity 1,200. Interior layouts are tailored to the charterer’s requirements. Interior contractors include Figura Arkitekter AB (Sweden) and Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH (Germany).
