Havila Capella ferry Review
Review of Havila Capella ferry
The 2021-built MS Havila Capella cruise ship is the first Norwegian coastal cruiseferry operated by the Norwegian travel brand Havila Voyages (a fully-owned subsidiary of HAVILA KYSTRUTEN). The shipowner is HK Ship V AS (also fully owned by Havila Kystruten).
The vessel has a maximum capacity of 680 passengers (plus 76 staff/crew) and cargo capacity for 9 cars and 190 pallets (40 of which can be refrigerated or frozen). She was inaugurated on December 12, 2021 (Maiden Voyage) and operates year-round on Norway's coastal ferry route Bergen-Kirkenes (crossing time 7 days), calling at 34 ports along the itinerary. This route is served by 11 ships in total (7 by Hurtigruten and 4 by Havila) and is government-subsidized.
The vessel (IMO number 9865570) is currently Norway-flagged (MMSI 257753000) and registered in Bergen.
Decks and Cabins
As a cruise ferry, Havila Capella staterooms (179 in total) offer 468 berths (lower and upper beds), in addition to 172 seats for day passengers. All cabins are air-conditioned, with carpeted flooring, ensuite bathrooms (washbasin, WC, glass shower, mirrored cabinets, hairdryer), wall-mounted HDTV, multiple USB ports, free WiFi, bedside tables, reading lamps, wardrobe, writing desk with chair, 2-seater couch, and electronic safe (in the closet). Bed linens, towels, and toiletries are provided.
The ship has 9 decks, 6 of which are accessible to passengers, with 4 decks featuring cabins.
Some cabins are wheelchair-accessible (adapted for disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility). The ship also offers "pet-friendly" cabins (with linoleum flooring). Passenger cabins are available in inside and outside categories, ranging from economy to luxury. Luxury cabins are larger, oceanview, and equipped with fixed lower beds (a double convertible to twins), a double sofabed (or 2-seater sofa), a larger wardrobe with sliding doors, and additional amenities such as a mini-refrigerator and tea/coffee machine.
The ship also has 172 recliners (aircraft-style seats) in a Reserved Seating Lounge available for pre-booking.
Passengers requiring special assistance should visit the Reception/Information Desk in the Lobby. All passengers must vacate their staterooms 30 minutes prior to arrival in port.

The Navigation Bridge and Helideck (aft-located helipad for emergencies) are on the top deck. Large parts of the top deck are covered with solar panels, generating part of the ship's electricity.
Emergency instructions are displayed in all staterooms, on TV screens, and at muster stations. Life jackets are distributed at muster stations. In emergencies, elevators may not be used. Smoking is prohibited throughout the ship.
Car Deck
MS Havila Capella has a single garage deck for cars and wheeled/palletized cargo. Cargo deck safety procedures include:
- Apply the handbrake and place the vehicle in park or first gear. Switch off ignition, alarms, electrical equipment, and headlights. Gas cylinders (if any) must be closed. Lock the vehicle.
- Take only valuables and essential hand baggage with you.
- Access to the car deck is prohibited during the voyage.
- Wait for the onboard announcement before returning to your vehicle.
- Do not start the engine until instructed, to avoid air pollution.

Havila Capella ferry Wiki
On March 23, 2018, Norway's Ministry of Transportation and Communications divided the "Norwegian Coastal Express" ferry service between Hurtigruten and the Norwegian company Havila Shipping (Havila Kystruten Ltd). The Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen route has been operated by Hurtigruten since 1893. The Norwegian Government provides an annual subsidy of NOK 788 million (~USD 100M) for this scheduled passenger service.
In late December 2018, it was announced that Enova (a Norwegian government agency) would provide NOK 88 million (~USD 10,1M) in financial support for Havila Kystruten’s newbuilds (NOK 22 million per vessel). Havila ships are from the Havyard-923 series and were designed specifically for the "Norwegian Coastal Express" service. The four newbuilds are LNG-powered hybrids (with alternative battery power) and each has a passenger capacity of 640. The ships were designed by Havyard Ship Technology (a subsidiary of Havyard Group, established in 2000, owner of Loland Verft in Leirvik, Norway).
Rolls-Royce Marine was contracted to provide the power plants and propulsion units for Havila’s vessels. The equipment includes 2 dual-fuel engines, 4 Bergen gas engines (two 9-cylinder and two 6-cylinder, all IMO Tier 3 compliant), 2 LNG tanks with bunkering systems, 2 LNG fuel systems, and control and safety systems. Propulsion is also Rolls-Royce manufactured and includes 2 Azipull thrusters (with Permanent Magnet drive motors), Neptune 200 stabilizers, and tunnel thrusters. The LNG fuel systems are separate, custom-designed, and serve both engine rooms (forward and aft).
In late February 2019, the Canadian-listed company Corvus Energy was contracted by NES (Norwegian Electric Systems) to deliver and install the world’s largest ship battery package ESS (Energy Storage System). The Orca ESS (air-cooled, with patented single-cell thermal isolation) weighs 86 tons, has a capacity of 6,1 MWh (6100 kWh), and allows up to 4 hours of “silent sailing.” Battery power is combined with hybrid gas-electric propulsion. Each vessel’s power plant consists of 4 LNG-powered marine engines with a combined output of 7,76 MW.
The ships are also equipped with a modern heat recovery system that uses seawater for cooling. All Havila vessels feature shoreside-power capabilities, allowing them to connect to the city’s power grid while docked instead of running onboard generators.
In early April 2019, Havila Kystruten and Kongsberg Maritime signed a 10-year contract worth NOK 150 million (~USD 17,6M) for “Power-by-the-Hour” service for the new cruiseferries. This service was first introduced in 2017 with NorLines (Norwegian coastal shipping and logistics company).
- Under the Havila-Kongsberg agreement, Havila assigned Kongsberg responsibility for service planning and vessel performance.
- The shipowner pays a fixed hourly fee per vessel. Kongsberg monitors equipment in real time from land-based control centers, collecting data from onboard sensors. Engineers can remotely access the equipment or dispatch service staff as needed.
- The package also covers planned drydock and wetdock maintenance. Kongsberg’s scope includes the propulsion system (Azipull thrusters with Permanent Magnet drive motors), tunnel thrusters, stabilizers, and LNG systems (including four Rolls-Royce Bergen C26-33L gas engines).
The Havila Capella (IMO number 9865570, hull/yard number NB1094) was launched on September 6, 2020, at Tersan Shipyard in Yalova, Turkey (approx. 90 km / 55 mi south of Istanbul). The ceremony was attended by Arild Myrvoll, CEO of Havila Kystruten.
The ship’s namesake is the 2021-built Travelmarvel Capella riverboat, operated by APT Travel/AmaWaterways.
The cruiseferry was delivered to Havila Kystruten on November 3, 2021, and scheduled to start operations on December 12 (Maiden Voyage, postponed from Dec 1), departing from Bergen. She left Turkey (Port Yalova) on November 9, with a repositioning voyage that included a bunkering stop in Port Escombreras/Cartagena, Spain (Nov 16), before arriving in Bergen on Nov 24.
Havila Capella was officially christened on November 8, 2022, in Alesund, Norway. The naming ceremony was led by godmother Hege Saevik Rabben (Havila Group’s Board Member).
