Blue Star Chios ferry Wiki
The ship's name translates to "Chios Island" in Greek, one of the Aegean Islands located in the Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean). The sister ship of Nissos Chios is the Nissos Mykonos (launched in 2005).
The vessel is powered by four WARTSILA marine diesel engines (model 12V38) with a total power output of 31.7 MW, and is equipped with two controllable pitch propellers (CPPs) for propulsion.
The ferry was ordered on January 1, 1999. Construction began on March 21, 2006, with the keel-laying, and the vessel was launched from drydock on November 15. It was completed and officially inaugurated on July 18, 2007. Initially owned by HELLENIC SEAWAYS, the cruiseferry was later chartered to BALEARIA. While with BALEARIA, it operated the ferry routes Almeria-Melilla (Spanish Morocco) (crossing time 3.5–7.5 hours) and Almeria-Nador (Morocco) (crossing time 6 hours). For HELLENIC SEAWAYS, it operated on the route Piraeus-Chios-Mytilene (Lesbos Island), with crossing times of 8 hours (Piraeus–Chios) and 2.5 hours (Chios–Mytilene).
In 2019, the cruise ship was acquired by BLUE STAR FERRIES and renamed "Blue Star Chios." It remained Greece-flagged (MMSI 240672000) and is registered in Piraeus (Athens).
