Hedy Lamarr ferry Wiki
The ship is powered by two MAN marine diesel engines (model 9L48-60B, total power output 21.6 MW) and propelled by two controllable pitch propellers.
In August 2018, Balearia purchased the vessel Visemar One from "Visemar Di Navigazione" for EUR 55 million (USD 62.4 million), expanding its fleet to 26 owned units (out of 30 total). Following the acquisition, her flag-state (registry) was changed from Italy (MMSI 247281400) to Cyprus (MMSI 209348000, registered in Limassol). She was also renamed from "Visemar One" to "Hedy Lamarr," honoring Hedy Lamarr (Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, 1914–2000), a Vienna-born American film actress.
In November 2018, BALEARIA launched a EUR 443 million (USD 520 million) drydock reconstruction project to retrofit nine ferries for LNG (liquefied natural gas) propulsion. The project was partially (20%) funded by CEF (Connecting Europe Facility).
All drydocks (at Gibraltar Gibdock and West Sea’s Viana Shipyard) included converting the diesel engines to MAN dual-fuel systems and installing LNG tanks. Each vessel now operates with dual-fuel (LNG-diesel) MAN marine engines (model 9L-51-60-DF). The Wärtsilä-made LNG tanks (one or two per ship) can store up to 425 m³ LNG, enabling autonomous operation for up to 1800 km (1100 mi). Onboard gas piping was supplied by Cryospain (Madrid-based). The engineering project was designed by Cotenaval (Valencia-based).
The retrofitting program improved fuel efficiency, with each vessel expected to achieve annual emission reductions of over 9113 tons CO2 and 871 tons NOx, along with zero SOx emissions and no soot particles. The annual CO2 reduction per ferry is equivalent to removing approximately 6000 cars from the road.
