MSC Explora 1 Review
Review of MSC Explora 1
The 2023-built MSC Explora 1 cruise ship (officially “Explora I”) is the first in a series of six MSC EXPLORA-class expedition vessels, followed by fleetmates Explora 2 (2024), Explora 3 (2026), Explora 4 (2027), Explora 5 (2027), and Explora 6 (2028). These vessels are owned by the MSC Group and operated as a separate fleet under MSC’s luxury travel brand EXPLORA JOURNEYS.
The vessel (IMO 9869875) is Malta-flagged (MMSI 256389000) and registered in Valletta. Delivery was delayed three times in 2023—initially from March to May, and twice in July.
History – construction and ownership
MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is headquartered in Genoa and Naples. Established in 1960, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of the Mediterranean Shipping Company—the world’s second-largest container shipping company and the world’s largest privately owned cruise operator.
By annual passenger volumes, MSC ranks as the world’s third-largest cruise shipowner, following only Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Group.

MSC’s EXPLORA-class ships offer extensive indoor public spaces, more than 2,500 m2 (~27,000 ft2) of outdoor deck areas, a spacious Sundeck with 64 private cabanas, three outdoor swimming pools (two aft, one forward), and a midship pool covered by a retractable glass roof (featuring a two-deck sunbathing area and large LED screen). Several Jacuzzies (indoor and outdoor), multiple sundecks with poolside dining and lounging, nine dining venues (restaurants and food bars), and 24-hour in-suite dining complete the ship’s luxury offerings.
Explora I features a state-of-the-art wellness complex exceeding 700 m2 (~7,500 ft2), comprising an indoor-outdoor Spa (with nine treatment rooms, Thermal Suites, and Beauty Salon) and a Fitness Centre (270+ m2 / 2,900+ ft2) equipped with modern training systems and a dedicated Fitness Studio. The two-lane Running Track encircles the Deck 12 sunbathing area.
The passenger-to-crew ratio of 1.25 ensures a high level of personalized service.
Of the total ~16,600 m2 (~179,000 ft2) of passenger-accessible areas, approximately 6,250 m2 (~67,300 ft2) is outdoor space—equating to about 6.5 m2 (70 ft2) per guest.
For more information on EXPLORA-class vessels, visit the ship’s Wiki section.
Decks and cabins
All MSC Explora I staterooms (461 total) are outside-facing, feature private balconies, and belong to Suite categories. The vessel (Fincantieri Monfalcone yard/hull number 6319) has a volume of 63,900 GT, a deadweight of 7,500 tons, and a maximum draught of 7 m. The powerplant consists of four Wartsila 8L46F marine diesel engines with a combined output of 38.4 MW (51,500 hp). Propulsion is provided by a PEM fuel-cell–battery hybrid system (two motors) with a combined output of 20 MW (26,820 hp). The registered shipowner is MSC CROCIERE S.p.A., and the registered manager is MSC MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING CO.
In January 2018, strong rumors suggested that MSC was considering the launch of a new all-inclusive luxury cruise brand. An alternative option discussed at the time was the creation of a parallel expedition fleet. In 2020, it was confirmed that MSC would establish a new standalone luxury brand.
On October 18, 2018, MSC Group and Fincantieri signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the construction of four ultra-luxury ships, valued at EUR 2.0 billion (~USD 2.3B / ~GBP 1.75B). The announcement noted that the first ship would be delivered in Q2 2023, with a design based on ~64,000 GT and approximately 500 staterooms.
- The final shipbuilding contract for the four expedition luxury ships was signed on March 14, 2019.
- Both agreements were signed by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Executive Chairman) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri CEO).
- With this order, MSC’s total number of Fincantieri-built ships increased to 17 (total investment EUR 14.96 billion / ~USD 17.27B / ~GBP 13.6B), all scheduled for delivery by 2027. By that year, MSC’s cruise fleet is projected to comprise 29 vessels.
The combined investment of ~EUR 2.3 billion for the four units was estimated to generate an economic impact exceeding EUR 10 billion for the Italian economy, including employment benefits, as each vessel requires over 7 million man-hours and an average workforce of 2,500 over more than two years of construction.

The rumors were officially confirmed in March 2021 with the announcement of the new brand’s senior management team.
- Michael Ungerer (CEO), Chris Austin (Chief Sales Officer)
- Sarah Doyle (Chief Marketing Officer)
- Thatcher Brown (Commercial and Strategic Advisor), John Stoll (Destination Experience Advisor)
- Sacha Rougier (Itinerary Planning & Shore Experience)
- Prior to joining MSC, Chris Austin worked for Seabourn (SVP Global Sales and Marketing); Sarah Doyle for Bacardi Europe (VP Marketing); Thatcher Brown for GHK Dream Cruises (President) and Crystal Cruises Asia (Managing Director); Sacha Rougier for Cruise Gate Hamburg (Managing Director); John Stoll for Crystal Cruises and Silversea (Director Land Programs).
Construction of MSC Explora I (hull number 6319) officially began on June 10, 2021, with the steel-cutting ceremony at the Naval Service Center in San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine). Attendees included Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Executive Chairman), Michael Ungerer (Explora Journeys CEO), and Fabio Gallia (Fincantieri General Manager).
The keel-laying (coin ceremony) was held on February 24, 2022, at Fincantieri Monfalcone, during which two newly minted coins were placed beneath the first keel block. The ceremony was attended by godmothers Alessandra Fontana (Explora Journeys CMO) and Ester Fugazzi (Fincantieri Head of General Services), together with Pierfrancesco Vago and Giuseppe Bono.
Explora I was floated out of drydock on May 30, 2022, during a ceremony attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, Claudio Graziano (Fincantieri Chairman), and Pierroberto Folgiero (Fincantieri CEO).
On June 7, 2022, MSC announced the appointment of Captain Serena Melani (a master since 2016) as Explora I’s Master. On October 12, the line announced that the alternating Master would be Captain Diego Michelozzi (former Italian Navy officer).
In April 2023, Michael Ungerer announced that the ship’s godmother would be Sylvia Alice Earle (1935-born American marine biologist, oceanographer, author, lecturer, and founder of Mission Blue).
Explora I’s christening ceremony was initially scheduled for July 8, 2023, at Port Civitavecchia–Rome. Following the naming, the ship was to reposition to Southampton for the 15-night Maiden Voyage (July 17), ending in Copenhagen. However, construction delays caused multiple postponements. Delivery was pushed from July 6 to July 24, 2023. The vessel was officially delivered on July 20 at Fincantieri Monfalcone during a ceremony attended by Gianluigi Aponte (MSC Group Founder and Chairman), Pierfrancesco Vago, Zoe Africa Vago (godmother), Michael Ungerer, and Pierroberto Folgiero.
On September 25, 2023, Explora I arrived at Port New York for an overnight stay (Sept 25–26) at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, marking Explora Journeys’ North American debut.
The naming ceremony was ultimately held on October 12, 2023, at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, led by Sylvia Earle and attended by international media, VIP guests, and senior MSC and Explora Journeys executives.
World Cruise 2029 "Endless Worlds"
In December 2025, Explora Journeys announced its first World Voyage, scheduled on EXPLORA I in 2029.
Titled "Endless Worlds", the 128-day itinerary departs Dubai on January 6 and concludes in Barcelona on May 14. It spans four continents, three oceans (Indian, Pacific, Atlantic), and 63 destinations (including 12 overnight stays) across 29 countries and territories.
This itinerary marks the brand’s first venture into the South Pacific, including visits to Australia (Sydney, Cairns, Airlie Beach, Brisbane, Melbourne, Tasmania), New Zealand’s fjords, Fiji, Tonga, the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and Easter Island.
In the Americas, the ship will transit the Panama Canal and sail along South America's Pacific coast, calling at ports in Chile and Peru.
The voyage concludes with a Transatlantic crossing from the USA to Europe, visiting Bermuda and Portugal’s Azores before ending in Barcelona.
The full voyage is divided into seven segments, titled: "A Passage Through Lands of Iridescent Seas & Inspiring Cities" (Dubai–Singapore), "A Passage that Traces the Edge of the East" (Singapore–Sydney), "A Passage Stretching Across the Southern Arc" (Sydney–Auckland), "A Passage into the Sea of Islands" (Auckland–Tahiti), "A Passage to Rediscover Lost Horizons" (Tahiti–Valparaiso), "A Passage to Unveil the Many Americas" (Valparaíso–Miami), and "A Passage through the Atlantic’s Mosaic" (Miami–Barcelona).

MSC EXPLORA ship technology
All vessels for the Explora Journeys fleet are constructed at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone Shipyard (near Trieste, Italy).
With Explora I’s steel-cutting on June 10, 2021, MSC officially launched its new expedition travel brand, Explora Journeys. The mandala-inspired brand logo was created by Alexa Aponte-Vago (MSC Group CFO, daughter of MSC founder Gianluigi Aponte, and wife of Pierfrancesco Vago).

Explora Journeys vessels are equipped with the maritime industry’s latest environmental technologies and are designed to accommodate alternative energy solutions (hybrid powerplants) as they become commercially viable.
MSC EXPLORA-class ship design incorporates battery storage capabilities (supporting hybrid power generation) and the latest SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90%. Other environmental and energy-saving features onboard include an optimized hull (anti-fouling coating), enhanced hydrodynamics, a smart HVAC system, USCG-approved ballast water treatment, advanced wastewater treatment, LED lighting throughout, and CII trim optimization software (reducing main engine fuel consumption by up to 3%).
The ships have shoreside power connectivity (eliminating CO emissions while berthed) and advanced underwater noise reduction systems to protect marine life. All EXPLORA vessels feature a wide range of energy-efficient systems designed to optimize engine use and reduce emissions.
Explora 1 and 2 are powered by marine diesel engines using LSFO (low-sulfur fuel oil). Explora 3 and 4 are equipped with LNG engines, while Explora 5 and 6 combine LNG propulsion with hydrogen fuel-cell technology (a 6-MW fuel cell supplying electrical power for onboard hotel operations). All ships are RINA-certified under the DOLPHIN standard for reduced underwater noise and vibration. In line with MSC sustainability policies, no single-use plastics are used onboard or ashore.
In September 2020, Versonix Seaware announced that MSC’s new brand would use its reservation system for online cruise bookings. Versonix, founded in 1986 and headquartered in San Jose, California, serves more than 20 million passengers and over 100 ships annually. The company is led by Victor Velton (President) and Yuri Polissky (CEO).
In July 2022, MSC signed a contract with SES S.A. (Luxembourg-based satellite and terrestrial telecommunications operator) to provide O3b mPower satellite connectivity for the Explora Journeys fleet. O3b mPower integrates SES’s second-generation MEO satellites (~8,000 km / ~5,000 mi altitude) with its GEO satellite network (~35,800 km / 22,300 mi altitude).
On July 6, 2022, MSC signed a Memorandum of Agreement for two additional EXPLORA-class vessels (Explora 5 and Explora 6). These ships will be powered by LNG and hydrogen, featuring LNG main engines and a liquid hydrogen containment system. The hydrogen-powered 6-MW fuel cell will generate electricity for all hotel operations. With Explora 5 (2027) and Explora 6 (2028), MSC’s investment in Explora Journeys totals EUR 3.5 billion.
The initial cost of the EXPLORA-class vessels was EUR 495 million (USD 600 million) per ship. However, unlike the first pair (Explora I and Explora II), the second pair (Explora III and Explora IV) were redesigned with LNG propulsion, increasing their construction cost to EUR 615 million (USD 730 million), or +EUR 120 million per unit. The redesign also delayed their delivery dates, now rescheduled for 2026 (from 2025) and 2027 (from 2026), respectively.
